Exploring Panther Den Wilderness - Shawnee National Forest - Episode #1
The United States Congress designated Panther Den as a wilderness area in 1990. It now has a total of 1195 acres, 1081 acres is National Forest System and other portion is the Crab Orchard Wilderness. The primary trail system is the River to River Trail. This trail is well marked and has several loops are in the system. Several other trails branch off the River to River Trail and support the main trail system.
Directions: From Carbondale 3 miles east to Spillway Rd. turn south go 11 miles to Wolf Creek Rd. turn south and go 7 miles to Mt Hebron Rd. turn west and go 2 miles to Wayside Lane turn north 2miles into the wilderness area.

Exploring the Shawnee National Forest
John Leschot and I spent the weekend in Southern Illinois exploring the sandstone formations, caves, and people in the Shawnee National Forest. We did some rock climbing, swimming, and lots of hiking, and had a great time.
Sand Cave Shawnee National Forest
This area wasnt even mentioned on All Trails, the app I use almost exclusively to find the hikes i want to go on but I stumbled upon it just doing a search of caves and it only gave me coordinates to the trail head. Off I went and when i found a burnt down trailer and a dead end road with no sign of a trail i almost turned back but instead i headed down a pig path in a parking area about the same size as my truck. Thank goodness i did because i spent a good 3 hours exploring the area and things just got better and better. The cave was big but not huge,(it reportedly is the largest sandstone cave in the nation...but im not so sure) Huge is Mammoth Cave from my State, but past the cave was the real good stuff. 4 or 5 massive outcroppings with plenty of rocks to climb over and explore. It was a great day.

Exploring Ancient Native American Grounds!
Millstone Bluff is a natural bluff in Pope County, Illinois, United States, located near the community of Glendale. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its archaeological significance, Millstone Bluff is one of three National Register sites in Pope County, along with the Golconda Historic District and part of the Kincaid Mounds State Historic Site.[1]
The bluff is home to a prehistoric Native American settlement used by Mississippian cultures. The settlement site is little more than depressions sitting atop the bluff, which lies within the Shawnee National Forest. The United States Forest Service controls an interpretive trail to the site.[4] Aside from the remains of the Mississippian settlement, the bluff contains a prehistoric stone box cemetery, a rock art site, and a Late Woodland stone fort.[3]
Petroglyphs at this site include two thunderbirds, pipes, axes, a spider-like creature, turkey tracks, a humanoid form, and the cross and circle motif common to other petroglyph sites in southern Illinois.

Illinois Adventure #1308 Cahokia Mounds
The remains of the most sophisticated prehistoric native civilization north of Mexico are preserved at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. Within the 2,200-acre tract, located a few miles west of Collinsville, Illinois, lie the archaeological remnants of the central section of the ancient settlement that is today known as Cahokia. Cahokia Mounds has been recognized as a U. S. National Historic Landmark, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) , in 1982, designated Cahokia Mounds a World Heritage Site for its importance to our understanding of the prehistory of North America.
