Mdzimba Mountains- Sunday Hike - 04 August 2019 by The Natural History Society of Eswatini
The Hike was organized by The Natural History Society of Eswatini.
Mdzimba is a mountain and hill range in northwestern Eswatini. Mount Mdzimba flanks the eastern side of the Ezulwini Valley. This valley was once the residence of the Swazi royal family and is shrouded in legends and mysteries. The Mdzimba hills historically have had strategical importance and contain many caves in which locals would hide during raids. In 1826, the Swazi people retreated into the hills during an attack by the Zulus. The Boers met with the locals of Mdzimba on 16 December 1889.
The Mountain Range offers fantastic vistas over the Ezulwini Valley in Eswatini. Execution Rock and Sheba's Breast is opposite of Mdzimba Mountains and during a clear day one can spot them easily.
That day it was a bit hazy and also smoke from bushfires was responsible for the not 100 % clear blue sky.
Take the Tea-Road D36 to reach the peak, park your car and start exploring. The hike took us about 3.5 hours.

Starting the video with some clips from a morning at the lodge (eating breakfast with Vervet monkeys jumping around is fun until they still your food). Then some clips from our visit to the National museum of Eswatini where we were taught about local communities and their traditions, Eswatinis' independence and its nature.
The highlight of course is the hike to Sheba’s Breast mountain. Or shall I say how fit the dog was?!

I have climbed and played around this mountain most of my youth.
