Kelham Island has the best pub crawls in the country, full of award winning pubs. Many people like to start out at the amusingly named Bar Stewards micropub on Shalesmoor. Right across the road from that is the excellent Shakespeares with its massive menu of hand-pull drinks. It is then just a short walk to the extremely popular Kelham Island Tavern. This amazing pub is the only venue to have won the CAMRA’s national Pub of the Year award in two consecutive years.
If you’re arriving to the area on the Supertram, the Shalesmoor stop sits right next to The Wellington, the tap pub of the Neepsend Brewery. From there is is a hop over the crossings to get to the likes of The Ship, a historical pub which has been refurbished to a high standard in the last few years. It is said that two seamen, possibly smugglers, drowned during the Sheffield Flood of 1864 in secret tunnels under the pub.
Probably the most important pub in Kelham Island is The Fat Cat.
But what if Real Ale just isn’t your thing? Kelham Island has pretty much everyone covered. The Kelham Wine Bar is situated just at the end of the Ball Street bridge alongside its sister venue Graffiti Bar and Kitchen, which happens to have a lovely cocktail menu as well as a funky outside pod dining area.
Sat atop recycled shipping containers at the Krynkl complex is INC, Sheffield’s first rooftop bar. Some of the best Beer Gardens in Sheffield can be found in Kelham Island, such as Riverside Kelham. Remember to nip across the bridge for a good view of the famous artwork by Phlegm on the wall behind here.
The Milestone started the revolution of Kelham Island as a food destination.
What a place Cutlery Works is! Located in and named after the old Rutland Cutlery Works on Neepsend Lane, this amazing building has 14 food outlets and 3 bars on 2 floors - making it the largest foodhall in the North of England.
A must-visit event is Peddler, a night market that takes place at 92 Burton Road warehouses on the first Friday and Saturday of every month. This incredible space houses a huge rotating assortment of street food vendors, drinks, makers’ stalls, art and live music.

Hi, please help with this project. The idea is to map the accents of the English-speaking world. Just read out the script below on a video or sound file in a strong natural accent. The files will be used to create a database, educational tool for visitors, and who knows, in the future all those voice activated apps and products might actually understand you when you talk to them. Please help, you’ll be promoting business in your region and be part of creating a use for the web that has never been realised before.
“Hello and welcome to the Accentbase hub. I’m talking to you today to help you understand my local accent. I’m proud to come from City/Region* and the city/area* welcomes tourists and visitors of every kind from everywhere, near and far. I hope you enjoy your stay. If you’re not sure you understood this clearly, please listen to every word again. Thank you for listening.”
*Put the name of your city or region into the script, and use city, town, village or area, whichever you feel is most suitable.
Vowels: Ship sheep put you ten letter girl saw cat sun car hot hear name poor toy no where my how Consonants: Pot bed tap door chair jam come gum four very think the son zoo she vision man nose angry happy late red want yes
(NB the script has changed slightly from the one on the above video. This is correct.) Please submit a sound or video file to accentbase.com and help map the human world in sound. Read the following script to create your video or sound file, then upload it to the following link. it all takes ten minutes max.

[4K] Mi Amigo Memorial Flypast over Sheffield, 22/02/19
This video is a little different to the usual ones, as today, I saw a flypast over Endcliffe Park in my home city of Sheffield, to witness a memorial flypast to remember the 10 men who lost their lives 75 years ago, after their B-17 Flying Fortress crashed nearby when the crew attempted to avoid some children who were in Endcliffe Park at the time.
This flypast had finally been organised when BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker had been speaking to Tony Foulds, who was one of the children in the park that day. He has been tending to a memorial there for many years, without many people knowing, until now where thousands visited Endcliffe Park for this historical event.

Architecure. Sheffield Town Hall, interior hall preview. UK
sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/tourist-information/town-hall.html
I shot this video on 21/09/13
Sheffield's Town Hall was built considerably later than those of the same period in other industrial centres of Northern England. This seems to have been because of more urgent priorities in the minds of the Sheffield Council at the time. The Council appeared to be more concerned with tackling the many social problems caused by the trebling of Sheffield's population between 1843 and 1893, before erecting a prestige monument to the municipality.
Of the 178 designs submitted, that of a Mr. E. W. Mountford was judged to be the best. Mr. F. W. Pomeroy was chosen to carry out and supervise the carving.
The building was officially opened on 21st May, 1897 by Queen Victoria. Only four years later, the need for an extension was discussed and Mr. Mountford was instructed to prepare plans for it. Because of lack of sufficient finance and the outbreak of the Great War, it was not until 1923 that an extension materialised. This was to Mr. F. E. P. Edward's plan (the then City Architect). The cost was £115,600, and the extension was opened by The Prince of Wales on 29th May, 1923, twenty-six years after Queen Victoria had performed the original opening ceremony.

Main Entrance and Foyer
The wrought iron gates were designed by E. W. Mountford and possess a remarkable similarity to some installed at the Old Bailey extensions of 1907, also designed by Mountford and made by the same company, J. W. Singers of Frome, Somerset.
An amusing story surrounds the first opening of the gates by Queen Victoria, in 1897. Because of her age, The Queen remained in a landau on Pinstone Street. For the opening, the new miracle of electricity was to be employed. Appropriately The Queen turned the key in the special lock handed to her in her carriage. Miraculously, the gates slid open. Everyone present believed electric power was responsible. The truth was the key of the lock switched on a current to light a bulb inside the building. There, strong men were concealed and reacted to the signal by heaving the gates open manually.
The display case is used to display Sheffield Plate and other memorabilia presented to the city at various times and is changed frequently.
The two memorial plaques are for lives lost in the South African War and World War I, and the Foundation Stone was laid by the Mayor, Alderman William Johnson Clegg, on October 9th, 1891.
The outstanding features are the six large sculptures by Pomeroy depicting virtues suitably captioned - Be just and fear not - Work while it is day for the night cometh - God shall rule and guide our Councils - Better it is to get wisdom than gold - Let all things be done with charity - Strength and temperance shall enforce the law.
The Shield is from the cruiser ship HMS SHEFFIELD, which saw action in World War II.
The screen is carved out of oak and bears the Family Arms of the Duke of Norfolk and the Earl Fitzwilliam, both having early connections with Sheffield local government.
sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/tourist-information/town-hall/coat-of-arms.html
The arms were granted to the Sheffield Borough Council on 16th July 1875, and subsequently to the present City Council on 1st September 1977.
The lion on the crest is taken from the Arms of the Dukes of Norfolk, lords of the manor of Sheffield; it appeared also in the Arms of the Talbot family, their predecessors in the lordship.
The sheaf of arrows was the main motif in the seals of the Burgery of Sheffield and the Twelve Capital Burgesses, the two bodies which bore the brunt of local government in Sheffield before the creation of the Borough.
The three wheatsheaves on a green field were probably chosen at the College of Arms as a play upon the name Sheffield which means the open space by the River Sheaf.
The two supporters, Vulcan and Thor, were chosen for their aptness to represent a place whose prosperity is almost entirely founded on the working of metal. Thor on the left, the smith of the Scandinavian gods has his hand resting on a hammer, and Vulcan on the right, the smith of the Greek and Roman gods, is standing in front of an anvil and is holding a pair of pincers.
The motto (Deo Adjuvante Labor Proficit) may be roughly translated as With God's help our labour is successful.
