Places to see in ( Yorkshire - UK ) Sheffield Winter Garden
Sheffield Winter Garden in the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire is one of the largest temperate glasshouses to be built in the UK during the last hundred years, and the largest urban glasshouse anywhere in Europe. It is home to more than 2,000 plants from all around the world. It was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 22 May 2003.
Part of the £120 million Heart of the City regeneration project that has created the Peace Gardens and the £15 million Millennium Galleries, the Winter Garden was designed by Pringle Richards Sharratt Architects and Buro Happold and is some 70 metres (77 yd) long and 21 metres (23 yd) high.
The building has background frost protection to minimum of 4 degrees Celsius and it is one of the largest Glued Laminated Timber or Glulam buildings in the UK (Glulam is made by forming and gluing strips of timber into specific shapes). The wood used is Larch, a durable timber which will, over time, turn a light silvery grey colour. The larch, derived from sustainable forests, requires no preservatives or coatings. This reduces the use of solvents and also avoids the use of chemicals that could kill the plants. It has an intelligent Building Management System which controls fans and vents to make sure the plants are cooled in summer and kept warm in winter. The system will learn year-on-year.
The bedding plants are changed five times a year, to give a seasonal change, and all the plants are watered by hose or by watering can, as it is the only way to ensure that all the plants get the correct amount of water.

SHEFFIELD WALK | Sheffield Train Station to Peace Gardens
SHEFFIELD WALK | Sheffield Midland Train Station to The Peace Gardens
I start my walk through Sheffield outside Sheffield Midland Railway Station where I'm standing outside the main front doors.
This area of the city centre has had some really nice redevelopment done in recent times so as we turn to head up the road we can see the new fountains and steel water wall ahead of us.
Filmed on Sony RX100 V Camera - Crane M Gimbal -
Edited on Apple MacBook Pro -
We head uphill on this city walk until we reach the crossing where we cross over Sheaf Street first and then Paternoster Row.
On our right is the Howard pub which was formerly known as The Howard Hotel.
As we continue this Sheffield walk we head onto Howard Street and begin the walk up this old street. On either side of us are Sheffield Hallam University city campus buildings.
On the left is Sheffield Hallam University Science Park and on the right is the main Sheffield Hallam Uni City Campus including the howard building and the Owen Building.
Halfway up Howard Street we find The Globe pub on the left and over on the right the new Hallam Square, an open space for relaxation (mostly full of Hallam Uni students relaxing or studying)
At the top of Howard Street we come onto Arundel Gate with Sheffield Novotel hotel ahead of us, and the Millenium Gallery on the right.
As we cross over and head left we see the big building of St Paul's Apartments which is a prestigious Sheffield apartment complex, and beyond that the shiny silver Q Park carpark and Genting Casino complex.
We turn right past Sainsbury's to head up the steps that takes us up into St Paul's Place and where we find Cosmo restaurant amongst others and we turn right again and find the Sheffield Winter Garden ahead of us.
Turning left at the Winter Gardens we see the Mercure St Paul's Hotel and Spa and beyond that the Sheffield Peace Gardens, Sheffield Town Hall and Pinstone Street.
We end this Sheffield walk in the Peace Gardens, a relaxing place to spend time out of the hustle and bustle of Sheffield City Centre.

Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Sheffield name derives from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. With some of its southern suburbs annexed from Derbyshire, the city of Sheffield has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wider economic base.
In the 19th century, Sheffield gained an international reputation for steel production. Known as the Steel City, many innovations were developed locally, including crucible and stainless steel, fuelling an almost tenfold increase in the population in the Industrial Revolution. Sheffield received its municipal charter in 1843, becoming the City of Sheffield in 1893.
The city has a long sporting heritage, and is home to the world's oldest football club, Sheffield F.C. Games between the two professional clubs, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, are known as the Steel City derby. The city is also home to the World Snooker Championship.

This is one of my favourite Sheffield Walks.
I thought I would walk through the Winter Garden to show you what it's like in there as there is currently the World Snooker Championships and during the tournament the Winter Garden plays host to live TV broadcasts from a custom built TV studio inside.
But we aren't there for that this time (if you'd like to see the studio check out my other videos) as we are wanting to film a quick walk to Sheffield Train Station so we head straight through the Winter Gardens and into Tudor Square.
Tudor Square is home to Sheffield Theatres. There is the world famous Crucible Theatre, The Lyceum Theatre, and the Library Theatre all on the square.
For a walk round Sheffield Tudor Square is a great place to stop off for something to eat and relax in Sheffield City Centre.
Walking through Tudor Square we can see the TV trucks at the Crucible Theatre there for the World Snooker Championships.
We now move between the Crucible and Lyceum theatres and down onto Arundel Gate and walk along with the Lyceum Stage Door on our right (so many famous people have walked in those doors over the years).
Further along as we walk through Sheffield we cross the busy road and down onto Howard Street where Sheffield Hallam University is situated.
We continue this Sheffield city centre walk down Howard Street to the bottom and cross over Paternoster Row and Sheaf Street until we reach Sheffield Midland Train Station.
This Sheffield walk is handy to know if you need to get from the Town Hall or Peace Gardens down to Sheffield Midland Station quickly.

Come, relax & enjoy in the Winter Garden, may it be winter or summer :)
The Winter Garden
One of the largest temperate glasshouses to be built in the UK during the last hundred years has created a stunning green world in the heart of the city. Adjacent to the Peace Gardens and the Millennium Galleries the Winter Garden provides visitors with a unique pedestrian link through the city centre.
There are more than 2,500 plants from around the world creating a superb display. The building itself is 70 metres long and 22 metres high (large enough to house 5,000 domestic greenhouses!).
Facilities
The Winter Garden also provides a home for the Bessemer Gallery and offers a welcome stop for coffee and light refreshments. Access is available to the Millennium Galleries where, in Cafe Azure, a wide range of refreshments and facilities are available.
The Winter Garden was funded by the Millennium Commission, ourselves ( sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/parks-woodlands--countryside/gardens/the-winter-garden ) and English Partnerships.
Winter Garden Facts
The Building
The Winter Garden is designed by Pringle Richards Sharratt Architects - who designed the adjacent Millennium Galleries.
It was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 22 May 2003.
It's 70 metres long, 22 metres wide and the enormous wooden arches are nearly 21 metres high.
It is large enough to accommodate 5,000 domestic greenhouses!
More than 2,100 square metres of glass, 900 cubic metres of concrete and 80 tonnes of steel have been used.
400 tons of topsoil fill the plant beds - enough to fill almost 4,000 wheelbarrows.
The building has background frost protection to minimum of 4 degrees Celsius.
It's one of the largest glue laminate or 'Glulam' buildings in the UK (Glulam is made by forming and gluing strips of timber into specific shapes).
The system will 'learn' year-on-year.
The Plants
Home to more than 2,000 plants from all around the world.
The plants have been selected by local consultants, Weddle Landscape Design, for their suitability to growing at lower temperatures and to be pleasing on the eye.
Planting takes account of each variety's likes/tolerances - drought resistant plants are at the sunny, southern end of the Winter Garden.
There are 150 species of plants, including big palms from Central America, Madagascar and China.
Before being planted in the Winter Garden the plants were housed in an acclimatisation glasshouse in south east England for almost two years. This was to give them ample time to adjust to light and temperature levels similar to those of the Winter Garden.
Eucalyptus trees and Norfolk Island Pines can grow to over 150 ft high.
Pests are controlled by removing infested portions of plants and other biological controls.
Watering is done by hose, watering can and spray - it's the only way to make sure plants get just the right amount of water.

Sheffield - City Centre And Winter Gardens
I found myself in Sheffield City Centre with a couple of hours to kill, so did what I always do, got my camera out and went for a wander.
