Saint Barts : Gustavia and shell beach with Oceania Riveira
A day on the French island Saint Barthélemy, also called St. Barts or St. Barths.
We spent the day in Gustavia on two activities within walkable distance of where the tender boats dock. We were lucky that the annual Bucket Regatta took place. We spent some time admiring the beautiful and expensive yachts. After spending some time in Gustavia Harbor, we hit the beach. There’s one beach in town, Shell Beach, within 15 minutes walking from downtown. We spent a few hours snorkeling in the pristine water and enjoying the crystal clear warm water under the Caribbean sun. Shell Beach - unsurprisingly - is made up of millions of tiny shells.

Shell Beach, St Barth
It’s the closest beach to the dock in Gustavia, and set on a small, tawny sand cove carpeted in pinkish shells. This is Shell Beach, St Barth.
Shell Beach in St. Barths
The Crystal Symphony stopped in St. Barths today and it's a beautiful place. It's part of the French West Indies, and today I'm on a beach called Shell Beach which is covered with millions of beautiful shells.
Shell Beach is the only major beach located in a town (St. Barths) and is known for the millions of unique shells that wash up. It's also within walking distance of the capital city of Gustavia, which often hosts weekend festivals. With cliff-diving, restaurants and cocktails by the sea. There is plenty to do!
Shell Beach St Barth
Columbus discovered St Barts in 1493 and named it after his brother Bartolomeo. In 1763, French mariners from Normandy and Brittany settled the island. With the quantities of Spanish galleons they had acquired the French buccaneers found the place suitable for living.
St Barts remained French until 1784, when it was sold to Sweden by one of Louis XVI's ministers in exchange for trading rights in the Swedish port of Gothenburg. Now under Swedish rule, St Barts was very useful as a trade and supply centre for the colonial and revolutionary wars of the 18th and 19th century. When captains captured a prize or raided a settlement, they brought it to St. Barts and resupplied their ships. This period of prosperity was short-lived, however when motor vessels replaced sailing ships.
In 1878 the island was bought back by the French. To this day the free port status of the island remains. Swedish mementoes such as architecture, a cemetery, a few street signs, and the name of the harbour and capital, Gustavia are still the same as well.
In 1946, certain islands, including St. Barts, were expected to abide by the same rules that they do in France. The Department of France gave the citizens French passports, were expected to pay French taxes, and obey laws passed in Paris. Then In 1957, the American millionaire David Rockefeller bought a property on the island. It quickly grew to an upmarket tourist destination that everyone wanted to visit.
Within the past twenty years St. Barts’ population has more than doubled. Natives don’t want to leave, and outsiders are arriving daily to make a new home for themselves. In recent years a few of the Caribbean Islands including Saint Bart engaged in a process of political evolution. On July 15, 2007 and the islands first territorial council was elected and the new Overseas Collectivity of Saint Barthélemy was born. There were 19 members to the council and they elected Bruno Magras as the first president.
Because of the laws passed by the council St Barts is now tax-free and the natives love the lives they live. Everyone who wants somewhere to relax and enjoy the beautiful Caribbean air should consider coming to visit this island.
Shell Beach St. Barts | Pinoy Vlog # 9
Shell Beach got it’s name exactly for why you think, for some reason, it is one part of the island where a ton of shells have accumulated on the shore. This makes Shell Beach one of the 4 rarest beaches in the world to have shells naturally wash up on its shore at this magnitude.
For those who are a bit more adventurous, once you make it to the end of Shell Beach you can actually continue along the coastline for cliff jumping. It’s a popular activity to do on Shell Beach during the day and is only accessible via swimming to the left and reaching these huge rocks that you’ll have to climb. I highly recommend you bring a bottle of wine or beer if you can to augment the experience.

We had one of our best vacations in Saint Barths this past 2018 Christmas. Getting there was a bit harrowing, flying in on the tiny 20 person plane into SBH airport, but once we landed it was like paradise. If you're looking for Caribbean vacation ideas, St. Barth is a can't miss destination, just make sure to head there April-June to maximize the great prices and still good weather.
We've been a full-time travel blogger couple for 3 years and this was our first time to St. Barth.
// How to Get to Saint Barths [2019 Travel Destinations]
To fly into SBH airport, you need to take a connecting flight. There are no direct flights from either Europe or the US. The two options are:
- Fly from SJU on Tradewind Airlines (this is the route I would recommend as the experience is more seamless and luxurious)
- Fly from SXM St. Martin on a 20 seater plane into SBH (this is how we flew onto the island and left. On our return flight, our flight was delayed and we ended up missing our connection so make sure to plan 3 hours of travel time on your way out)
// Where to Travel & Stay in Saint Barthelemy [Travel Vlog]
St Barts is one of our must-hit 2019 travel destinations and after you watch this video I think you'll understand why.
We stayed at Villa Marie St Barth in Colombier:
With this being our first time on the island we wanted to stay at a trusted, loved location that’s central to everything and that’s why we chose Villa Marie. It’s a boutique property with the other location being in St. Tropez. We were lucky enough to score a rate so we could write our review.
It’s situated atop one of the many hills near Colombier beach and has bungalows built all around the property with a pool in the center. The on-site restaurant is Francois Plantation run by chef Emmanuel Motte and the cuisine tasted just as amazing as we remember our trip to Provence.
// Where to eat in St. Barth
L’Isoletta is the more casual wing of local Italian haunt L’isola and after a couple nights of multiple course meals we loved the simplicity of the dishes. Get the fresh mozzarella and tomato salad, the pork and beef meatballs and the pasta pomodoro. Wash it all down with a Moretti, an espresso and a parting shot of limoncello.
Le Tamarin offers French Caribbean cuisine in a beautiful outdoor setting. There’s a giant old knotted tree centering the property and tons of turtles swimming and scooting around. You’ll love the cocktails, the shrimp ravioli with octopus and the mahi mahi. For dessert grab the petite four and pair them with the infused shots.
// Top Vacation Spots on St Barts
+ Shellona at Shell Beach offers amazing mediterranean fare and a beautiful beach made of shells. Shell Beach is easily one of the best Caribbean beaches both for its beauty, the people watching and the unique nature of having the shells.
+ Eden Rock, the hotel and beach club famous for hosting musicians and their live music sessions is currently being renovated, but just down the beach is Pearl Beach where we had an amazing time
