Seemed abandoned, but it had electricity and ventilation, so...
While walking through the territory of a factory, located in the industrial area of the city, I noticed a weird concrete block with a metal gate on the side of it. I opened it and a ladder climb later I was in a dark, small tunnel leading to an underground bomb shelter/safe house.

13 Years Living Off the Land - Man Shares REAL Homestead Experience
Peter from TreeEater Farm & Nursery ( in BC shares the challenges and lessons learned from his experience earning a living off the land for 13 years with his partner Magdalene.
Peter moved to a piece of land in British Columbia's Gulf Islands as an idealistic 22-year old who wanted to save the world and reduce his environmental footprint by growing his own food, building his own shelter, and producing his own fibres for clothes. Magdalene joined him a few years later.
To make this homesteading project financially viable, the couple has had to experiment with different revenue streams, including community supported agriculture (CSA) vegetable box programs, hand forged tools, meat animals, dairy cows, and selling fruit and nut trees, as well as plenty of off-farm work as well.
After a steep and labour-intensive learning curve, Peter has realized that living off the land can be very expensive, that it can be difficult to earn an income from agricultural products — especially if your land isn't situated in an area with a market for your product nearby, and that living off the land requires a lot of infrastructure & maintenance — all of which costs time and money. And they aren't even trying to be off grid.
It was refreshing to get such an honest look behind the scenes of what appears to be a utopian lifestyle: living in a hand built timber frame home with a cozy wood stove, and eating fruit and nuts from your own island orchard's trees, and to know there's quite a big financial and physical struggle to make it all happen.

Remodel USA's Animal Home Makeover Project Benefits SPCA of Anne Arundel County, MD
The SPCA of Anne Arundel County is getting some badly needed renovation courtesy of Remodel USA, a local contractor based in Capital Heights, MD.
This shelter is the largest and oldest animal welfare organization in the county. For over 95 years, the SPCA has provided comfort and humane care for homeless animals in need and has led advocacy for animal welfare in this community.
The current facility, The Mary E. Parker Shelter, opened in 1986. Modern for its time, the building provided air conditioning, flexible runs, medical isolation rooms and other updated facilities. It served the needs of thousands of animals as a wayward station on their path to the loving homes of so many in this county. The building has proudly withstood the tremendous growth of the organization but the toll of constant cleaning, power washing and the daily wear and tear of animal care is now becoming more evident. All with a single pet in the house can imagine a home with hundreds!
The Shelter is now getting a well deserved “makeover” at the hands of an incredibly generous contractor, Remodel USA. The company’s President and Founder John Cherubim explained how the SPCA of Anne Arundel County appeared on their radar screen. “We had been looking for a good community improvement project where we could make a difference. One of our employees learned of the growing situation at the Shelter with decaying windows and the deterioration of the building. One of our specialties is installing energy-efficient windows. We were happy to get involved. More work is being planned.” To date more than 40 energy-efficient windows have been installed at a value of over $31,000.
A grateful SPCA President Kelly Brown noted, “this project was literally a breath of fresh air as many of the old windows would not even open! The animals and staff of the SPCA are deeply indebted to the kindness and generosity of Remodel USA. These new windows improve the livability of the facility, provide badly needed air circulation and will substantially reduce our heating and cooling costs. We are excited to see the next phase of this project unfold.” Brown added, “monthly energy expenses at the shelter exceed a thousand dollars. We expect a very different bill in the future and now more funds will be available to support our mission of direct animal care.”
The planning process for additional renovations and upgrades is underway. The entire process is being captured on video as Remodel USA hopes to showcase the company’s community projects and promote the SPCA of Anne Arundel County. They also want to entice other contractors to get involved in this “Animal Home Makeover” and create an entertaining video highlighting the efforts of these community philanthropists.

Incredible Cob House Tour - A Sustainable Green Building
Tour one of the most famous (and beautiful!) cob buildings in the world! The Unique Cob Cottage is on Mayne Island, BC and is the 4th most wish-listed property on Airbnb.
Unique Cob Cottage on Airbnb:
The Cob Cottage is a fully permitted, 2-storey, load-bearing cob structure that was built by Cobworks in 1999.
Cobworks:
Cob is an environmentally friendly mixture of clay, sand, and straw that can be used in many different climates to create green buildings with organically shaped walls.
To learn more about cob as a natural building material, check out the video we share a couple of months ago:
This cottage is on the grid with a well, septic tank, and hydro power. They use a woodstove for heat.
We felt super lucky to be able to meet Alexis and her family, and tour their cob cottage. It's an incredibly beautiful space and we hope you enjoy checking it out.
It's nice to see so much interest in green buildings, and to see that this cob structure has been standing for almost 20 years and still looks brand new!
Maintenance on the cob house is done by Bryce from Dreamweavers Collective:
