Today In History July 21st
The First Battle of Bull Run (named after the closest creek), also known as the First Battle of Manassas (named after the closest town), took place on July 21, 1861, and was the first major land battle of the American Civil War. Unseasoned Union Army troops under Brig. Gen. Irvin McDowell advanced against the Confederate Army under Brig. Gens. Joseph E. Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard at Manassas, Virginia, and despite the Union's early successes, they were routed and forced to retreat back to Washington, D.C.

This week: Deputy Secretary Mike Connor takes part in a watershed restoration agreement in Arizona, and tours the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho; the USGS says an experimental earthquake warning system worked as planned during this week's quake in the San Francisco Bay Area; the Land and Water Conservation Fund means more land for an upstate New York wildlife refuge, and four Civil War battlefields in North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia; and National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis welcomes thirty new American citizens at a ceremony at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington DC.
