Clip 0008 : XJ2 Crew : Tainan City : West Central District : Shennong Old Street
Clip #: 0008
Location: Shennong Old Street, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan
This video clip was shot during production of the XJ2 Crew On The Road in Tainan City episode. It shows the XJ2 Crew walking around Shennong Old Street, well-known for its restaurants, quaint and curious shops, and old charm. During the hot afternoon, they treated themselves to a traditional ice cream shop.

These are a few of the things we did in Tainan. I'm so gutted because at the end of our stay in Tainan I think I managed to wipe/format my SD card so I lost 2 days worth of clips :(
Of all the towns and cities we visited in Taiwan, Tainan was my favorite. The food, the people, the culture and the hotel were all amazing!
The highlight of our trip was definitely the meal we had at 度小月 Du Hsiao Yueh Restaurant (no.2 below) and the charcoal grilled peanut brittle wrap with coriander (no.7 below).
So whilst they are not all captured on the videos, here is a list of all the places we visited in Tainan:
1. 香格里拉台南遠東國際大飯店 Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Tainan
701, Taiwan, Tainan City, East District, 大學路西段89號
(a beautiful 5* hotel I booked for Chris's birthday)
2. 度小月擔仔麵 Du Hsiao Yueh Restaurant
No. 101號, Zhongzheng Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(check out the eating Taiwan video)
3. 花園夜市 Garden Night Market
No. 533號, Section 3, Hai'an Road, North District, Tainan City, Taiwan 704
(check out the eating Taiwan video)
4. 安平樹屋 Anping Tree House
708, Taiwan, Tainan City, Anping District
(a warehouse which has been reclaimed by nature)
5. 安平老街 Anping Old Street
Yanping Street, Anping District, Tainan City, Taiwan 708
(an old shopping street selling traditional foods and bits)
6. 赤崁樓 Chihkan Tower
No. 212, Section 2, Minzu Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(an old tower build by the Japanese)
7. 土豆伯府城花生糖 Charcoal Grilled Peanut Brittle Roll
No. 200號, Section 2, Yongfu Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(delicious old school Taiwanese snack where the peanut brittle is heated on a charcoal fire then passed through rollers to be flattened then wrapped around fresh coriander; so good eaten warm)
8. 阿江炒鱔魚 A Jiang Stir-Fried Eel Yi Noodles
No. 89, Section 3, Minzu Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(only 2 things on the menu, wet or dry stir fried smoked eel noodles)
9. 神農街 Shennong Street
Shennong Street, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(really pretty old street with a Japanese vibe; aka Osaka of Taiwan)
10. 泰成水果店 Fruit Ice Shop
No. 80號, Zhengxing Street, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(frozen fruit smoothie ice blocks served on half a honeydew/cantaloupe melon... bit over hyped)
11. 蜷尾家甘味處散步甜食 Soft serve ice cream
No. 92號, Zhengxing Street, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(famous ice cream chain, popular flavours sell out early. I tried the Taiwanese tea soft serve and it had really good flavour)
12. 台南雙層巴士 Tainan Sightseeing Bus
701, Taiwan, Tainan City, East District
(Tickets can be bought from the first stop outside Tainan main train station. We got promo tickets for TW$300 = £7.50 for the full day which are usually TW$500 = £12.50. They offer 3 routes which go to the main tourist spots but live commentary is only in Chinese and the English is using the pre-recorded audio headphones)
13. 大東夜市 Ta-Tung/Dadong Night Market
No. 276號, Section 1, Linsen Road, East District, Tainan City, Taiwan 701
(pretty much the same vendors as the Garden Night Market because they operate on alternate days though still worth it to get your night market food fix)
14. 夏家手工魚麵 Fish Noodles
No. 353號, Section 1, Fuqian Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(run by two ladies rushed off their feet; with queues out front. Super cheat eats, really good food. Noodles have a unique chew to them because of the fish meat)

The Old Streets in Tainan ﹟1 Shennong Street
台南神農街
Shennong Street is the most well preserved old street in Tainan. The feature of it is its two- story wooden houses building in Chin dynasty, and the houses rebuilding in Japan colonial period. Even though the houses are old, they are still trying to break a new ground, and they are doing well.
Compare to modern buildings always show off their technology, old houses just flow their elegance quietly. Look at the decayed woods, rusted iron materials, and iron bloom windows, they are telling you their stories. Be patient, “children “! They tell slowly.

YUANLI
Yuanli is an excellent place to enjoy the morning markets which are still a key feature in urban areas on this island. Less than 100m from Yuanli Railway Station, the block bordered by Weigong, Tianxia, Datong, and Jianguo roads is crammed full of vendors.
Some sell vegetables, others fabrics, others prepared food. The range of hot and cold snacks is enticing. One especially popular option is the glutinous pork-filled disks at Jinguang Meatballs (open daily 8am to 9:30pm).
Jinguang Meatballs (金光肉圓)
Add: No. 80, Tianxia Rd., Yuanli Township, Miaoli County
(苗栗縣苑裡鎮天下路80號)
TONGXIAO
One stop and six minutes north of Yuanli is Tongxiao. Stopping here is recommended, as both fresh-air lovers and history buffs can indulge their passions at Hutoushan Park.
First, you’ll come to the remains of a Shinto shrine built in 1937 by the Japanese authorities then ruling Taiwan. After World War II it was preserved by the Chinese Nationalist government, which had reclaimed Taiwan in 1945, but rededicated to heroes of the Republic of China (ROC). Despite post-earthquake modifications since carried out, which reflect postwar political correctness, the site retains considerable elegance.
A little further up, what was once a military lookout post is now shaded by an immense concrete lotus. The lotus flower is a Buddhist symbol of purity, so this is perhaps an attempt to counter the site’s military atmosphere with peaceful sentiments.
At the very top of the hill is a monument that since 1945 has served as a celebration of Taiwan’s return to the Chinese fold, but which was originally erected by the Japanese to mark a crucial moment in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05.
XINPU
Some might think there’s nothing to see at Xinpu but the station itself, a quaint 1922 wooden structure. But they’d be wrong.
Known to rail enthusiasts on the island as the location of one of the stations closest to the sea, Xinpu is a splendid place to stop if you want to feel sea breezes. Here, as at several other spots along Miaoli’s coastline, there are boardwalks and bicycle paths.
There’s also a rather odd park called Qiumao Garden, 350m south of the station. Its garish yet cutesy statues – among them are representations of ROC founder Dr. Sun Yat-sen, Daoist deity Guan Gong, and the entire cast of Journey to the West – are clearly visible from passing trains. Kids will enjoy the slides and concrete animals.
BAISHATUN
Baishatun enjoys island-wide fame of sorts, thanks to Gongtian Temple and the annual pilgrimage that begins and ends here. Like the better-known festival that kicks off down the coast at Dajia Zhenlan Temple, it’s an expression of the Taiwanese people’s adoration of Mazu, the Goddess of the Sea. In 2011, this pilgrimage was declared a national intangible cultural asset by the central government.
ZHUNAN
It’s impossible not to notice the immense statue of a stern-looking, burgundy-skinned man, naked from the waist up. His head is 156m above street level, making this representation of Shennong, the Chinese God of Agriculture and putative inventor of herbal medicine, the largest religious icon in the region. The statue sits atop Wugu Temple, inside which you’ll find other effigies of Shennong. He’s easy to recognize, because he’s invariably depicted holding sprigs of millet in his right hand. Another of his names, Wugushen, means God of the Five Grains.
Getting There:
Taking a train from Taichung Railway Station to Yuanli takes about 70 minutes (NT$79); from Yuanli to Zhunan takes about 45 minutes (NT$61). If you want to get from Zhunan to Miaoli THSR Station, take a train to Fengfu Railway Station (10 min.; NT$16), which is next to the THSR station.
The stations between Yuanli and Zhunan are not far apart from each other, but as the gap between services on this stretch of railroad often exceeds an hour, do carry a schedule of train times. This information can be found on the TRA’s bilingual website, railway.gov.tw.

Taiwan - Tainan
Tainan is a special municipality of Taiwan, facing the Formosan Strait or Taiwan Strait in the west and south. Tainan is the oldest city on the island of Taiwan and also commonly known as the Capital City for its over 200 years of history as the capital of Taiwan under Koxinga and later Qing dynasty rule. Tainan's complex history of comebacks, redefinitions and renewals inspired its popular nickname the Phoenix City.
As Taiwan's oldest urban area, Tainan was initially established by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a ruling and trading base called Fort Zeelandia during the period of Dutch rule on the island. After Dutch colonists were defeated by Koxinga in 1661, Tainan remained as the capital of the Tungning Kingdom until 1683 and afterwards the capital of Taiwan Prefecture under Qing Dynasty rule until 1887, when the new provincial capital was moved to Taipei.

MyInspireProject EP3 – Taiwan, A Home Island to a Wealth of Culture, Sensational Food and Nature
Our new episode is dedicating to our home town, #Taiwan, an island formerly known as Formosa in the 17th century and remains largely undiscovered by Western travelers. But for those who make it here, they are in for a real treat.
Taiwan displays a wealth of culture with an eclectic mix of Chinese, Western, Japanese and indigenous influences. We have invited Taiwanese actor and celebrity TV host, Yi Lee, to explore the #StreetFood Culture with us. And we were also honored to experience the new era of the traditional Puppet Show and Art with Pili International Media and Taiwanese designer Wang Li Ling. The biggest surprise of all, is Taiwan’s nature: from towering mountains, rushing rivers, tropical beaches and sheers cliffs on the coast. With no doubt, Taiwan is one of the most welcoming places on earth, as we encountered numerous acts of generosity and kindness throughout the journey.
Through our story, we would like to share the highlights of the new “#MadeinTaiwan,” and we hope this hidden paradise would attract more adventurous travels from the rest of the world.

City Streets and Street Markets - Cycling around Tainan City, Taiwan 2018
I went to explore the city of Tainan on a T-BIKE and went cycling through the crowds of some of the local street market, it was rather fun, the rental bikes are always funny old things to cycle.
Tea Story
February 10, 2016 - Enjoy a cup of freshly brewed tea! Representatives of the Hagajae Museum from Korea will demonstrate a traditional tea ceremony, compare the development of tea culture in Korea, China, and Japan, and show how to continue the tradition within one’s own family.
Hagajae Museum began as a collective desire to establish a non-profit art organization in 2013. Expanding the depth and range of the multifarious and inventive programs, Hagajae seeks to be a catalyst for dialogue between regions, art, cultures, academia and individuals. Hagajae believes that art can be a life-changing experience and will continue to actively strive to ignite a fascinating journey in learning about one's own curative power.
Ghim Roy is a representative of Hagajae and volunteer philosopher. He divides his time between caring for patients during the daytime, researching and lecturing the fundamental issues from a diverse spectrum of studies from East-West philosophy to literature at night. He majored in Biomedical Genetic Engineering in Seoul National University, College of Medicine and then studied Oriental Medicine in Kyung Hee University, College of Korean Traditional Medicine. Since then, he has taken a profound interest in the contraposition between Eastern and Western cultures, material and spirituality, historical tradition and future vision. Now he tries to seek healthy answers in humanities by throwing more questions for understanding oneself.
