SHORT TERM LANGUAGE AND CULTURE AT SHENYANG UNIVERSITY, CHINA
Short Term Language and Culture Program was organized by International Education Exchange Centre, Shenyang University(SYU). This program fee was partially funded by University Malaysia Terengganu through Student Mobility Fund by International Centre of UMT. These 12 students were selected which consist of 6 students of Mandarin Language, 3 students of Bahasa Melayu Ilmiah and 3 students of Komunikasi Antara Budaya. The main objective of the program is to expose the participants towards mastering Chinese language, culture and its history. Shenyang University is chosen for this mobility program as its International Education Exchange Centre (IEEC) of SYU is one of the examination sites of Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK). IIEC also set up practical in the Chinese as a Foreign Language, they also come with great importance not only to the combination of Chinese Language Teaching through Chinese Oral Classes and Chinese Character Classes also with Chinese Culture Teaching by learning the pottery making, Chinese painting, paper cutting, Chinese National Instrument, Chinese food culture, Chinese fan painting and Tai Ji Boxing.

CHINA: SHENYANG: LOCAL OPERA ER REN ZHUAN FLOURISHING IN DEPRESSION

The once proud blue-collar industrial centre in northeast China now lies mired in depression.
But amidst all the unemployment in Shenyang in the Liaoning Province, a local opera style called Er Ren Zhuan is flourishing.
Like Abbott and Costello did during America's depression years, Er Ren Zhuan delivers relief from the oppressive bleakness of daily life.
Performances of the Er Ren Zhuan opera on the Shenyang streets are a common sight these days.
It acts as a form of escapism for the many unemployed people here who are looking for something to cheer them up.
The actors believe that the art's popularity is mostly due to its ability to adapt to every day life as well as the deep rooted historic and cultural significance.
Located in a dark alleyway is the Everybody Joyous Theatre.
It is one of the most famous venues in Shenyang that performs the Er Ren Zhuan opera.
Its director, Yi Gang, says the theatre offers people something to do during their unemployment.

Now the government no longer takes care of us. We were forced to
be laid off and had to find something else we can do.

The actors usually live in small rooms above the theatres and sometimes even share a small room with more than 10 of their fellow actors, in appalling conditions.
Some of them only stay in Shenyang during the winter to support their families, but often their wages are only around 12 dollars per day.
Most of the audience live within walking distance of the theatre and nearly everybody is unemployed.
By paying 30 cents they crowd into the hall and try to forget life outside.

The audiences consist of the struggling, the laid off and the migrant.
Many of the them attend several performances a week.
They say it is much better than television which is full of advertisements for things they can not afford to buy.
Shenyang's Er Ren Zhuan provides some of the most vulgar shows in China, but the audience seems to like the variety of entertainment it offers.

The masses find it easy to understand. It cannot be considered
as high art but it is still suitable for the masses.

About the only entertainment in Shenyang apart from Er Ren Zhuan is the cinemas and bordellos.
Prostitution has been decriminalised here and women involved in the business pay a flat rate of 35 dollars a month for job security.
Local establishments make little effort to disguise their purposes, and streetwalking ,which is rare in other parts of China, is common in Shenyang.
Unemployment has been very bad in China for some time, and has been getting worse.
By the government's own conservative figures at least 10 (m) million people have been laid off from struggling state run enterprises alone, and (m) millions more are expected to follow.
The Chinese government is committed to continue the painful reforms which are pushing more and more people out of work.

Shenyang Pharmaceutical University (Chinese: 沈阳药科大学; pinyin: Shěnyáng Yào Kē Dàxué; SPU) is a university in Shenyang, Liaoning, China. It is the first research institutes in pharmaceutical sciences in China.
Shenyang Pharmaceutical University has historical traditions that have brought it to prominence as one of two comprehensive pharmaceutical universities in all of China. The university started at Ruijin in the Jiangxi in 1931 and moved to its present location on the banks of the Hun River in Shenyang, Liaoning in 1949.
SPU has developed into a multidisciplinary, multilevel and multiform institute of higher learning, covering wide and diverse majors within the domain of pharmaceutical study. It consists of the schools of Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical engineering, Traditional Chinese Medicines, Business Administration, Basic Courses, and Adult Education. SPU has been authorized to confer master's and doctor's degrees and to enroll students from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, as well as other countries.
SPU has resources that facilitate learning: The Institute of Material Medicine; The Institute of Pharmaceutical Education of Higher Learning; The Computer Center; The Audio-visual Education Program Center; The Center of Instrumental Analysis; The Botanical Garden of Medicinal Herbs, and a subsidiary pharmaceutical factory.
SPU has a staff of 1,111, among them there are 394 full-time teachers. The student population has grown to more than 7,000. There is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, over 182 professors and associate professors (nearly one-quarter of them have work experience abroad, nearly one-third have doctorates).
More than 3,000 academic papers have been published by SPU academics on research toward recommended dosages of pharmaceutical preparations, polyphase liposomes and solid preparations, on chemical and active components of traditional Chinese medicines and natural drugs, on the distinction and properties of chemical models of traditional Chinese medicines and the study of their quality control. All of this scientific exploration is at the forefront of research in China. In recent years, numerous mutually beneficial collaborative efforts have come to fruition between the University's academics and all levels of government: city, province, and state.

ounded in April 1923, NEU is one of the prestigious universities in China, boasting its rich cultural deposit and glorious patriotic tradition. General Zhang Xueliang (or Chang Hsueh-liang) was the honorary president from August 1928 to January 1937. NEU is designated as the national key university of the “211 Project” and “985 Project”, jointly run by the Ministry of Education, Liaoning Province and Shenyang City.
