We were so excited to visit northeast China for the first time! We flew into Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province, from Shanghai on a direct Spring Air flight. Instead of taking a taxi into the city, we opted to try public transportation. The urban tram to BaiTaHeLu Station cost just 2 RMB per person, but it was extremely slow. From there we had to walk about five minutes to the subway station of the same name. Shenyang has just two subway lines, so it's very easy system to navigate. We had to transfer once before arriving at our final destination, Shenyang Station. It took almost 1 hour and 30 minutes to get from the airport to Shenyang Station. Because the cost of living is relatively low, taxi meters start at just 8 RMB and public transport is slow, we would opt for a taxi the next time around.
We spent the day exploring downtown Shenyang on foot. We were fascinated by ZhongShan Square the home of an enormous Chairman Mao statue. We especially loved seeing the statue at night when so many different groups gathered in the square for aerobics, dancing, break dancing, badminton, and biking.
Another point of interest is TaiYuan, the underground shopping streets that run between ZhongShan Square and Shenyang Station. It's recently undergone major renovations that weren't completely done by the time we visited. But we think it'll be an awesome food and shopping destination once it's 100% finished. For anyone looking to get a manicure or pedicure, Glo recommends TaiYuan where she got a gel manicure for just 30 RMB!
For dinner we had Korean BBQ in XiTa, which is a Koreatown filled with Korean restaurants and shops. Given Shenyang's proximity to North Korea, the city and province as a whole have a reputation for excellent Korean food. We were not disappointed! This was definitely the best Korean food we've so far had in China! And it cost just 120 RMB for the entire dinner!
Lastly, we stayed at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Zhongshan location. The room was comfortable, and the staff were helpful and spoke a bit of English. It's within walking distance of Shenyang Station, but it's a long walk (about 20 minutes).

Dalian's Zhongshan Square (China)
Dalian's Zhongshan Square / 中山广场 / 中山廣場 in the heart of the city's financial district is surrounded by some of the best examples of colonial-era architecture in the city. Though the square was first laid out by the Russians most of the buildings around the square were built between 1910 and 1920 by the Japanese.
The square was originally built in 1898 by the Russians as Nikolayevskaya Square (Николаевская площадь, meaning Nikolai's plaza). It was later renamed by the Japanese as Ōhiroba (大広場), meaning large plaza as compared to the smaller Nishihiroba (西広場) meaning west square), now called Friendship Square (友好广场 / 友好廣場). After 1945, it was once more renamed as Zhongshan Square, in honor of Sun Zhongshan (Sun Yat-sen), the first president of the Republic of China.
Zhongshan Square is 213 metres (699 ft) in diameter. Inside the five-lane roundabout there is a green zone and a paved area where people gather to dance on summer evenings, participate in foreign language corners, or do other things. There are underground passages leading to the inside of the square from both Zhongshan and Renmin Roads.

The Shenyang Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city of Shenyang, Liaoning, China. It is the 7th operational subway system in Mainland China and the first in Northeast China. The system connects with a tram network in the southern part of the city.
Shenyang was one of the first Chinese cities with a metro plan. The initial plan of building a metro system in Shenyang was proposed as early as 1940, during the Manchukuo era with an Osaka-based company proposing a 52-kilometre (32 mi) metro network. However, chaos caused by the Second Sino-Japanese War and Chinese Civil Wars meant the plan could not be implemented.
After the wars, the metro program was revived again when the Chinese government decided that the four biggest cities at that time, Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Shenyang should build metro systems for transportation and military purposes. The subway was envisioned to also function as an air raid shelter in an event of war.
Construction in of the metro started in 1965 but was stopped shortly after due to the turmoil from the Cultural Revolution. Only the initial sections of the Beijing Subway and Tianjin Metro managed to be completed. Construction was restarted in 1974, on a line roughly following today's Line 1. In 1978 with government personnel from Harbin, Tianjin and Shanghai visiting to Shenyang to learn about the subway construction experience.
In 1982, subway construction was halted due to lack of funds and resources. The approximately 3 km long half completed tunnel was abandoned and filled with water. While the Shanghai Metro was put into service in 1995, the economic decline of Shenyang during the 1980s-1990s meant that there was no capital available for subway construction and the program was continually postponed.
A light rail system was designed in the early 1990s as a cheaper alternative, however this plan was also abandoned after a national suspension of subway projects was declared due to worries of high cost and financial debt.
Shenyang's economy revived in 2000, and with it growing traffic congestion and pollution caused by the expanding urban population. This prompted the Chinese central government to approve the subway proposal on November 8, 2005. Construction of the first phase of Line 1 started on November 18, 2005 with the entire phase opening on September 23, 2009. The line had 12 stations and went from Shisanhao Jie to Tiexi Square station. A western extension of Line 1 to Liming Square opened in September 27, 2010. Line 2 opened a year later on December 30, 2011 and was further extended south on January 9, 2012.
Plans for two east-west lines, two north-south lines, a loop line, and two branches with a total length of 182.5 kilometres (113.4 mi) have been expanded to eleven lines. Currently there are 3 lines being planned in the near-term in preparation for construction. All 3 of them shall be complete by 2018. The original loop line is broken into 2 L shaped lines that intersect twice to form a loop. Line 4 will start construction in 2014.

It''s really difficult to buy a ticket now. I was number 9 in the queue for tickets in the ticketing hall but still failed to get one. There are more than 10 trains to Shenyang every day, so I feel like it is still very difficult to buy a ticket this year.

STORYLINE:
Thousands of residents of the Chinese capital Beijing jammed the city''s train stations on Wednesday, as the massive exodus started of people travelling home to their families for Chinese Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival.
The traditional week long holiday, which begins on February 13, is China''s most important and for many, especially tens of millions of migrant workers, it is the only chance they get to return home to see their families each year.
Wednesday is only 3 February, but many were getting an early start on their journeys to get home in time and to avoid the big rush.
It''s not bad now, as the peak time for travelling hasn''t come yet, said one woman, who was travelling to Hebei Province. We are actually leaving early this year in order to avoid the peak time.
Heavy queues and long waiting times were already occurring at many train stations, with the number of travellers expected to be 9.5 percent higher than it was compared to the same period last year.
Officials have warned around 210 (m) million Chinese citizens will face ticket shortages, massive crowds and possible weather difficulties as they try to get home this year.
That''s despite the government increasing the number of passenger trains and ticket counters.
Despite the delays, many Beijing residents appeared to accept their fate on Wednesday.
The government said a nationwide crackdown on train ticket scalping is also under way with a launch programme in several southern provinces that will require travellers to present their identification card when buying a ticket.
Scalping, which is illegal in China, is rampant and contributes to a ticket shortage problem for peak travel seasons when scalpers hoard tickets to resell at higher prices.
