Opening Ceremony - 26th Summer Universiade Shenzhen 2011 (CHN)
August 12th, the kick-off of the 26th Summer Universiade took place with the traditional Opening Ceremony. A third Universiade for China, after 2001 (Summer) in Beijing and 2009 (Winter) in Harbin. Therefore, the expectations were high as the Chinese are known to be masters in staging big shows. And once again the hosts did not disappoint. A dazzling and colorful show took place in front of 25,000 spectators giving the green light for 12 days of thrilling sport competitions between student-athletes in 24 sports.
After a pre-ceremony warm-up of with song and dance, it was time for the real thing. A brilliant flash of light illuminates the huge stage in the Shenzhen Bay Sports Centre 'Spring Cocoon', to depict an information highway running through the stadium as a vivid symbol of this Universiade, representing the information age.
The national flag of China enters in a sea of flowers and is followed by a marching band of university students. The crowd raises when the flag is hoisted while China's national anthem is played.
1,000 beautiful girls holding flowers flow into a remote mist and gather a piece of a radiant stars river. On the 'Gate of the World', which is 26m high and 125m wide, performers harmoniously move back boards on the giant screen. Numerous drums salute the great era of reform and opening-up; the Chinese calculator, reminds the spectators of the glories of ancient Chinese civilization.
Then the giant screens shows a countdown and when this comes to an end, a giant representing the spirit of the Opening-up and Reform Era opens the 'Gate of the World' for the delegations to enter. Led by beautiful Chinese girls, the athletes walk along 'Youth Avenue'. At the rostrum, they separate in two different directions and get seated in their designated sections.
The three high ranking officials of the Universiade, Mr. Wang Rong, Vice-President of the Organizing Committee, Mr. Yuan Guiren, President of the OC and Mr. Killian, outgoing FISU President deliver their speech from the middle of the arena while surrounded by bright colors. At the end of his speech, Mr. Killian invites the President of China, Mr. Hu Jingtao to declare the Universiade open.
The flying colorful silk and petals, the fireworks on the big screen -- environment friendly - and a meteor shower marks the prelude of a carnival. Using the universal language of music and dance, university students take us to a passionate and energetic world.
Then the FISU flag finally arrives in the stadium. It is hoisted while the FISU anthem, the 'Gaudeamus Igitur' is played and everybody stands. The flag hoisting is followed by the oaths by the representatives of the athletes and referees.
More music is played and everybody is in awe when a violin player is lifted up high in the sky from the main rostrum. Acrobats appear on the stage giving a marvelous performance. Emerged in university campus atmosphere, piled-up books, colorful gene-links and models with knowledge-symbolized fashion clothes display a picture of 'Book Mountain and Knowledge Sea'. The performers wearing baccalaureate gowns on the 'Gate of the World' remind people of their memory of anticipation to campus life.
The bicycle riders appear on the stage depicting the green road, stretching more than 2,000 miles in Shenzhen and Guangdong. And then the torch with the flame arrives. Five different torch bearers run a final lap around the stage. The last torch bearer is joined by four others, while all five of them represent the 5 continents, symbolizing unity. The five run through the 'Gate of the World' up to the five FISU stars and as they lit the stars, highway of fire finally lights the big cauldron with the Universiade flame. Let the Games begin!
It was a great honor for FISU to have the President of China open the Universiade. Besides Mr. Hu Jingtao, seven other heads of state were present at the Opening Ceremony, i.e. the Prime Minister o fHungary, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, the President of Sri Lanka, the President of Fiji, the President of Bolivia, the President of Mozambique and the President of Tatarstan. They all met briefly with outgoing President George Killian.

【China by Drone #1】New suburb and stadium in Shenzhen 深圳龙岗大运城航拍
Unlike in the West where people live in individual houses, China with its huge population and very limited land resources, people have no choice but to live in high rise apartments.
A small Chinese urban community will have at least thousands of households living in average three to four apartments, whereas within the same surface area, a urban community in the West would only consist of hundreds of household or even less.
It is no wonder why middle class Chinese people would choose to migrate to the West given the opportunity and not the vice versa,

Called Deep Breath, the building is articulated around a large central void, largely ventilated and planted, providing access to the various sports facilities, library, and auditorium. Conceived as a neighborhood in three dimensions, the project is designed to catalyze social interactions through art and sport, transforming into an urban lantern in the evening.

chinese military chillingly that it can hit hong kong in ten minutes
● Chinese military has declared it would take them just 10 minutes to reach Hong Kong as the financial hub braces for more demonstrations over the coming weekend.
Thousands of Chinese military personnel waving red flags paraded at a sports stadium in a city across the border from Hong Kong today, according witnesses, a day after the chilling warning was issued.
Armoured vehicles were also seen inside the stadium in Shenzhen when the event was taking place as concerns build that China may intervene to end 10 weeks of unrest in Hong Kong.
Parking spaces at the stadium were filled with more than 100 dark-painted paramilitary vehicles, including troop trucks, armoured personnel carriers, buses and jeeps.
At least three were armoured wheel-loaders, and two vehicles carried water cannons.
Satellite images taken on Tuesday showed Beijing had apparently assembled some 500 armoured vehicles to a sports centre in Shenzhen across the harbour from Hong Kong.
Three senior Hong Kong police officers said Thursday that they are not aware of any plans for Chinese forces to join efforts to quell mass demonstrations in the territory.
The officers added that they are unsure whether they would be informed ahead of time if Chinese paramilitary or army forces were deployed in Hong Kong. They agreed to speak to a group of reporters for foreign media only on the condition of anonymity.
The United States said yesterday that it was concerned about movements of Chinese forces on the border with Hong Kong and urged Beijing to honor the territory's autonomy.
But U.S. President Trump praised Chinese President Xi Jinping, calling him a 'great leader' and saying he could quickly resolve the unrest in Hong Kong if he wanted to.
He also suggested trade talks with China could wait until tensions in Hong Kong eased. He tweeted: 'Of course China wants to make a deal. Let them work humanely with Hong Kong first!'
Protests were planned across several districts of Hong Kong from Thursday, including a teachers rally, and one organised by animal lovers upset that their pets were being tear-gassed.
The Civil Human Rights Front, which organised million-strong marches in June, set another protest for Sunday.
The protesters have five demands, including the complete withdrawal of a now-suspended extradition bill that would have allowed criminal suspects to be sent for trial in mainland Chinese courts.
China reiterated on Wednesday that Hong Kong's protests were 'near terrorism' as more street clashes followed ugly and chaotic scenes at the airport two days ago, when protesters set upon two men they suspected of being government sympathisers.
Seventeen people were arrested on Wednesday, bringing the total number detained since June to 748, police told a news conference, adding that police stations have been surrounded and attacked 76 times during the crisis.
Police tactics are toughening after 10 weeks of increasingly violent confrontations between police and protesters have plunged Hong Kong into its worst crisis since it reverted from British to Chinese rule in 1997.
The land force of the Eastern Theater Command of China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) yesterday condemned the violent acts from Hong Kong demonstrators.
In a social media post, the troop also shared a picture showing military trucks parked outside Shenzhen Bay Sports Centre.
The sports centre, nicknamed 'Silkworm Stadium' for its design, looks out to Hong Kong across Shenzhen Bay.
'The Silkworm Stadium near Shenzhen Bay is situated 56 kilometres (35 miles) from Hong Kong Airport and it takes 10 minutes to reach Hong Kong from here,' the post warned.
Eastern Theater Command is one of the five military regions in China. Its jurisdiction does not include Guangdong, the province where Shenzhen is.
The post in question has since been removed from Chinese messaging platform WeChat.
Hong Kong has been rocked by protests over the past two months against a proposed bill that would allow people to be extradited from the city to stand trial in Communist Party-controlled courts in mainland China.

深圳灣體育中心與荒廢香蜜湖
Shenzhen Bay Sports Centre (Simplified Chinese: 深圳湾体育中心) is a multi-use stadium in Shenzhen, China. It is used mostly for table tennis, swimming and footballcompetitions. The stadium is known for hosting the opening ceremony and numerous competitions of the 2011 Summer Universiade. The stadium has a capacity of 20,000 spectators and the arena has a further 13,000.The Sports Center also hosts regular concerts.
In addition to Hong Kong, the collective memories of the people of Hong Kong are separated by a river. In Shenzhen, where the wilderness was 30 years ago, after the reform and opening up, it was committed to economic development, and it also greatly improved the people's livelihood, including the construction of the largest amusement park in Southeast Asia, Shenzhen Xiangmihu China Entertainment City (referred to as Xiangmihu). It has also become a good place for Hong Kong people to play in Shenzhen at the end of the last century. However, the good times are not common. Xiangmi Lake has been declared closed due to the bleak business. The traces of the park are scattered everywhere. If it is not a rusty roller coaster, the doll on the pirate ship, everyone almost forgets its existence!
