Shepherd University, Sara Cree Hall Chimney Swift tower roost on August 12, 2016
The Shepherd University, Sara Cree Hall currently hosts an active Chimney Swift roost in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. This building has had an active roost for many years, and Chimney Swifts are a signature part of the Shepherdstown historic experience. This roost site is only one of two known to exist in the entire state of West Virginia. The total number of Chimney Swifts counted entering the chimney on this evening was a very conservative 1,360. This is the largest number of swifts ever documented at this roost so early in the migration season. Numbers are expected to increase into early September as the swifts are preparing for their long journey to Peru, where they live for the winter months.
On August 12, 2016, nine observers with three additional visitors watched as Chimney Swifts circled and circled the vacant chimney, sometimes changing directions in the process, until they all dropped down into the chimney for the evening to roost.
The weather was a hot and humid 82 degrees F, no wind, with a thunderstorm cell in the vicinity plus occasional lightning seen on the video.
Chimney Swifts will roost prior to and during their migration from North America to Peru, then return back to North America to breed. Observing Chimney Swifts entering a large roost such as this one seen in the video, is an amazing sight to behold.
The time of this observation began approximately 7:45 PM with the swifts ending their flight at approximately 8:35 PM. Most of the swifts dropped into the chimney between 8:20 PM and 8:30 PM.
This roost site is planned for demolition in the near future in order to build a parking garage for Shepherd University. The Sara Cree Hall is currently not being used for classes or other activities. It is hoped that alternative roosts can be made available for the Chimney Swifts that have used Shepherdstown for many years. Chimney Swifts are neotropical migrants, and are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
