Shaw TV's Paul Beilstein travels just outside of Shirley to visit the Sheringham Lighthouse. Lighthouses are disappearing along BC's coast. The Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society looks to keep it around for all to visit.

Sheringham Lighthouse
Some aerial footage of Sheringham Lighthouse in Shirley, near Sooke, BC. I was really pressed for time, and the tablet I use to live-view my drone crashed on me, so it's very short. Also you may notice the cocoon-like state of the light, which apparently was revealed the next day. But, flying conditions were perfect with a rare windless day, so I took it up anyway.

These videos could eventually end up on a TV channel called the Frame. At least that is what it is called here... not sure what it is called elsewhere!

February Waves at the Sheringham Point Lighthouse
On this February 10 2014... the swells were coming in at the Sheringham Point Lighthouse. It is difficult to tell from the video but the swells are anywhere from 6' - 12'! There was hardly any wind and it was wonderful day!
They were working on the lighthouse when I was there... changing bulbs and that kind of thing. Unfortunately that is all the Coast Guard does there anymore. The fog horn has been discontinued and the only one in the area anymore is at Whiffin Spit. Sad to see them go! Hopefully the friends of the lighthouse (or whatever they are called) can get the building back into shape... it is starting to decay around the edges.
The Sea Otter was a surprise for me... I didn't notice it until I got the pictures in the computer! If I had known I probably would have ventured farther out the second big rock as that seemed to be where he liked to hang out! I will go and check it out another time... Otters like to frequent the same bars... I mean rocks!... so there will probably be
signs of his presence!
I have now watched what I have put up here and I have noticed that the Otter... if you look carefully you will see that he is carrying a fish.. and a pretty good sized one at that... and that will be what the Eagle was after as well! That is the same rock! You can see that the Otter goes right up on top of the rock...must be the best seating in the house! Not having seen the Otter myself at the time... didn't realise that what was going on! The Eagle was just looking for leftovers!!
The only other wildlife that I saw and didn't get a chance for pictures was when... walking through some fairly dense brush... my attention was caught by a noise to my right and when I looked a Falcon was leaving the area in a hurry... I'm not sure why as I would likely have just walked right on by and not even noticed him!
All in all it was a pretty nice walk!

This was a nice night and being up in the trees like that made it quite a bit warmer too!
