Egypt - Mummies
(2 Mar 1994) Egypt reopened a display of 3,500 year-old royal mummies on
Tuesday (1/3) hoping the remains of its pharaonic ancestors would
help attract tourists scared away by Moslem militant attacks. The
display of 11 mummies, put under wraps by the late president Anwar
Sadat in 1980, was unveiled by Prime Minister Atef Sedki. It
includes ancient leaders like Ramses II, the military pharaoh who
ruled Egypt for 67 years until his death in 1224 BC, as well as
three of the pharaohs' queens. Another 16 mummies are being
prepared for public display some time next year. The mummies,
discovered in southern Egypt in the late 19th century, are kept in
glass cases in a single, dimly-lit room. They lie on their backs,
gnarled and wrinkled hands crossed over their chests, partly
covered in linen or sack-cloth. The dark skin on their faces is
drawn taught over sharp aquiline features. Most appear peaceful,
with closed eyelids and tight expressionless smiles.
Mummification, a ritual burial practice for the wealthy, began
with ancient Egyptians who believed in the after-life. Few of the
mummies were discovered in their original tombs, which were
desecrated thousands of years ago and stripped of their lavish
contents by tomb robbers. Most were transferred at least 2,500
years ago by priests to large communal graves. The largest one,
containing the mummies of 40 Pharaohs, queens and nobles, was
uncovered in 1876 near the Valley of the Kings where the
undisturbed tomb of King Tutankhamun was later discovered. The
mummies were ordered locked away in 1980 by Sadat, who said it was
morally improper to display the remains of Pharaohs whose dignity
should be preserved. But Abdelhalim Noureddin, chairman of the
Egyptian Antiquities Organisation said last month the display
should entice badly-needed visitors. Moslem militant attacks
against foreign tourists began in 1992. They have been a serious
blow to the tourist industry, which once brought in about $3
billion a year. Officials say the violence cost the country about
$900 million last year.

Aquarium Grotto Garden, Cairo, Egypt - El Zamalek Island
Aquarium Grotto Garden, Cairo, Egypt - There might be a beautiful aquarium to visit in Alexandria ( Egypt, although it is a small one, but when it comes to Cairo, the aquarium grotto garden is considered the only fish garden to be found in there.
The aquarium grotto garden in Cairo is found on El Zamalek island, the district with the most green areas in Cairo. The location of this aquarium garden is Gabalaya street in Zamalek and it is one of the most famous places that the old Egyptian movies used to shoot the love scenes there.
The aquarium grotto garden (حديقة الأسماك in Arabic) was opened to the public in the 19th century after it was a private property of El Khedive Ismail. This place was very famous for lovers more than a century ago but these days it started to lose its popularity.
A lot of visitors say that the garden is not the same as it used to be and that is one of the reasons why people stopped going there as much as they used to. Even though it is named the aquarium grotto, there aren't many fish found inside as one would expect, yet the place is considered a beautiful destination for a beautiful walk there.
When this garden was in the construction phase, an Italian engineer was responsible to bring something that is much like the Italian gardens and even the passages which are made from real lime can get you lost inside the place while you are trying to discover its different corners and passages.
Even though the sea species are not so many, there are rare ones which you could see inside, such as the hundred and so aged turtle that lives beside a fish which could clean its tank alone. In addition to the living sea creatures, there are also different mummified species which are placed in jars and each is written its details on the jar.
We recommend this aquarium grotto garden not only for couples, but we also recommend it for families because it could be a very good picnic place where the kids could play and ride the bicycles. It is also considered a good place in the middle of Zamalek island where there is no noise and where one could run away from the hassle of the traffic jam happening outside; you should just bring something to sit on because the chairs there need to be repaired.
This peaceful place is good for a morning walk since the working hours of the garden start at 8:30 in the morning and ends at 4:30 in the afternoon, giving people the chance to have some good time inside during the first part of the day.
The entrance fee for the aquarium grotto garden is five Egyptian pounds per person, which is considered reasonable and not expensive by any means, giving the person the chance to head there with his/her family members without worrying about the amount of money that will be paid.
The staff working in the aquarium grotto garden are very helpful and will offer all the information you might need while wandering in the place. Some of those old working staff are well aware of the different scenes being shot in the place back in the black and white Egyptian movies and could point out these locations and tell you who were the actors.
The aquarium grotto garden is one of the things that used to be very famous in the golden times before, not only due to the movies being shot there, but also because famous actors and actresses of the old time used to have some walks in the garden, and one of them is Abdel Halim Hafez, who also used to live just beside the garden that his apartment could be spotted from there.
El Zamalek is one of the fancy places in Cairo, Egypt, that people always love to hang out in it because it is an island that hosts different cafes and restaurants and thus give the people the chance to enjoy a good time by the Nile - of course that comes in addition to some of the other hidden gems which are found in the streets inside. The aquarium grotto garden is part of El Zamalek and it gives the visitors the chance to enjoy other things after finishing their walk, such as heading to the Andalus park in which they could sit, have a walk, or enjoy staying away from the crowded streets (
There are different places in Egypt that could let you more knowledgeable about the city, such as visiting Cairo Tower which is also found in Zamalek ( or else tending to go to the Egyptian Museum which is not far away and is placed in El Tahrir square ( going to the Islamic Art Museum ( or else walking through the streets and trying to discover more about the old Egypt.
There are different things to know about Egypt and in addition to spending the days visiting the historic places, sometimes going to gardens is needed to make the day much more comfortable. This grotto is the place for those who want to have a walk in a quiet area away from the street.
