Shetland Day 4 - Unst | Britain's Northernmost Isle
On the 4th day of our trip we went over to Unst, Britain's northernmost island. To get there we had to take a ferry to the island of Yell and from the North of Yell we took another ferry to Unst. We booked the ferries the day before, so we had a time frame to consider. It is highly recommended to book when it is busy. On Unst we saw Bobby's famous bus shelter, the Viking Unst Project, which includes a reconstructed Viking longhouse and the ship Skidbladner. We also popped into the nearby Unst Heritage Centre in Haroldswick. The next stop was Hermaness National Nature Reserve, which has many breeding birds, including Great Skuas and Gannets, of which we saw plenty. It took us roughly 2 hours to hike up to Britain's Northernmost point to see the lighthouse on Muckle Flugga and Outstack, the last piece of land before the North Pole. The view of the rugged coast was breathtaking and you have to see it for yourself as it is difficult to capture its true scale and the sublime feeling it leaves you with. On the way back to the ferry we stopped by a not-so-well preserved chambered cairn and the Underhoull Viking longhouse remains and broch. There was also a huge standing stone nearby, known as the Bordastubble Standing Stone (see my current profile picture). ☟☟☟

Shetland 2018 - Hermaness National Nature Reserve on Unst
Walking on Hermaness, Unst, Shetland, UK.
On May 7th, 2009: 6 degrees, and a very very strong wind on the northernmost part of the UK.
Shetland Adventures 3 - Unst Part 1
Join me in Britain’s most northerly island, as I take a wander along the coast from Belmont to the Westing. Sights include plenty of seabirds - solans (gannets) in particular, seals, archaeology and some wonderful cliff scenery.
All of the music is from the brilliant Unst fiddle player and composer Steven Spence.
Enjoy!
Old Photographs Of Unst Shetland Islands Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Unst, one of the North Isles of the Shetland Islands, Scotland. It is the northernmost of the inhabited British Isles and is the third largest island in Shetland after the Mainland and Yell. Its main village is Baltasound, formerly the second largest herring fishing port . Uyeasound village takes its name from the neighbouring strait of the same name, which looks over to the Isle of Uyea. Uyeasound is home to Greenwell's Booth, a Hanseatic warehouse and Muness Castle which was built in 1598 for Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie, half brother to Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney. Earl Robert was succeeded by his son Patrick in 1593. The building may have been constructed under the direction of Andrew Crawford, Earl Patrick's master of works, who also oversaw construction of Scalloway Castle and the Earl's Palace at Kirkwall, Orkney. In 1627 the castle was burnt down, and may never have been fully repaired. St John's Church in Baltasound, the largest settlement on the island of Unst was built between 1825 and 1827 with local labour. The Springfield Hotel, later to become the Baltasound Hotel, was well known to many servicemen from RAF Saxa Vord a radar station operated by the Royal Air Force. RAF Saxa Vord was further north than Leningrad, and on the same latitude as Anchorage, Alaska, America. The station was named after Saxa Vord, which is the highest hill on Unst at 935 feet. It holds the unofficial British record for wind speed, which in 1992 was recorded at 197 mph, just before the measuring equipment blew away.Thomas Barclay, born June 1792, died 23 February 1873, was a minister in the Church of Scotland and Principal of the University of Glasgow. He was born in Unst, and studied at King's College, Aberdeen, the predecessor institution of the University of Aberdeen, graduating M.A., and relocated to London, England, to work as a journalist. He later returned to Scotland to become a minister in the Church of Scotland.Burrafirth is where the shore station for the Muckle Flugga Lighthouse was located. The name Haroldswick comes from the Viking King Harald, and is reputed to be the first landing point for the Vikings on the Shetland Islands. For many years, Haroldswick Post Office was the most northerly in the UK and visitors could get a special postmark. Since the office's closure in 1999, this record is now held by the post office in Baltasound

Dive on the British Submarine HMS E49 Balta Sound, Unst, Shetland.
This site was dived from the MV Hatherleigh on her 2012 Shetland Expedition out of Scarborough by members of Scarborough Sub Aqua Club. This was a 5am dive on Saturday 14th July 2012. The viz was exceptional and according to local fishermen this was due to the run of northerly winds experienced in the area. These winds apparently bring clean water south which is good news for divers but bad news for fishermen (the fish can see the nets coming!). The site was sheltered from the northerly swell and we came alongside in Balta where we received a warm reception from locals again.
After diving this site we dived Outstack, Vee Skerries and then the Oceanic site followed by the Braer Site. All excellent diving.
Seabird colony, Hermaness Nature Reserve, Isle of Unst, Shetland, early April 2016
After walking across the peaceful, treeless, peat bog landscape of Hermaness Nature Reserve on the Isle of Unst in the Shetland Isles, I suddenly found myself standing next to cliffs, overlooking the vast Atlantic and an enormous seabird colony. The views were amazing.
