Shey Monastery and Vista, Ladakh
Shey village is located 15 km south of Leh, on the bank of river Indus. Gompa building, viewed from road looks elegant, clutching to the rugged mountain side. The prime attraction is 17.5 meter high Maitreya Buddha, which is made with copper and brass and decorated beautifully with gem stones. Around the Buddha idol, ancient, religious, range of artifacts, paintings and Thankas catch our attention. The vista as seen from Gompa is astounding. Shey Monastery, Leh - Ladakh
The Shey Monastery or Gompa and the Shey Palace complex are structures located on a hillock in Shey, 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) to the south of Leh in Ladakh, northern India on the Leh-Manali road. Shey was the summer capital of Ladakh in the past.
The palace, mostly in ruins now, was built first in 1655, near Shey village, by the king of Ladakh, Deldan Namgyal, also known as Lhachen Palgyigon. It was used as a summer retreat by the kings of Ladakh.
The Shey Monastery was also built in 1655 on the instructions of Deldon Namgyal, in the memory of his late father, Singay Namgyal, within the palace complex. The monastery is noted for its giant copper with gilded gold statue of a seated Shakyamuni Buddha. Shakyamuni Buddha is so named since Buddha was the sage (muni) of the Sakya people who resided in the Himalayan foothills and their capital was Kapilvastu. It is said to be the second largest such statue in Ladakh.

INTRODUCTION
About Shey Monastery & Shey Palace
Amidst the abundance of natural beauty and magnificent mountains, Shey Monastery was built in 1655 by Deldan Namgyal, the king of Ladakh, in the memory of his father. This Palace was maneuvered as a Summer Retreat for the Ladakhi kings.
One of the most notable and key features of the Shey Monastery is the Shakyamuni Buddha, standing tall with a height of 39ft in copper and gilded gold. It is estimated to be the second largest Buddha statue of the kind in all of Ladakh.
On either side of the Buddha statue, the 16 saints (arhats) who achieved Nirvana, are displayed. And the wall behind the Buddha has paintings of Buddha’s two most popular disciples. The walls of the entire monastery are painted with colorful depictions. The monastery is decorated with multiple murals of Buddha, various rock carvings and chortens all around the Shey Palace.
Very close to the Shey Palace, around 400 meters, there is another shrine built by Sennge Namgyal, which is home to another astounding statue of Shakyamuni Buddha in a sitting posture. At the farther end of the valley, lies the official residence of the Lama of the monastery, which offers a grand view of the majestic Indus Valley, along with the view of other scenic places like Thiksey Monastery, Stakna Monastery, and Leh town.

After Pangong, we returned to Leh and decided to go to some places nearby Leh! Our first destination for the day was Hemis Monastry, which is one of ancient Monastry of Ladakh, was established in 1630. It is located in a mountain around 45 kms from Leh town! After having lunch at Hemis restaurant and cafe in the Monastry we headed to Shey Palace, which is the royal palace of the Ladakh monarchs which is about 15 kms from Leh town! Shey Palace is an ancient palace and a Gompa!
All in all it was a fun filled day and a relaxed one too!!

Shey Gompa - Monasteries of Ladakh
Idea and Creation:
King Deldan Namgial (1620 - 1640) built Shey palace (15 Km from Leh) in the beginning of the 17th century AD. The main image in the monastery is the 3 storey statue of Buddha Shakyamuni, made of copper guilt, which was made by King Deldan Namgail in the memory of his father Singay Namgail.The statue is the only of its kind in the region.
