Shields Ferry
The ferry across The River Tyne at Newcastle runs between North and South Shields. There has been a ferry here since the 14th century, one of many ferry routes that served the people of Tyneside. This is the only one to remain in use. It is operated by the Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Authority (NEXUS).

North Shields is a town on the north bank of the River Tyne, in the metropolitan borough of North Tyneside,in the UK. It is located 13 km east of Newcastle upon Tyne. It has a population of 39,042.
Its name derives from Middle English schele meaning 'temporary sheds or huts (used by fishermen)' and still today, the area is synonymous with fishing and other trades associated with seafaring.
Here I go on a short walk through the town centre.

There have been ferries across the Tyne for hundreds of years. In 1986 the Hebburn to Jarrow ferry closed leaving the Shields ferry as the only one remaining. You can see the location of the Hebburn to Jarrow ferry in my films relating to the locations of the film Get Carter.
The Shields ferry service makes just under 25,000 journeys a year, making around 400,000 passenger journeys.
There are two vessels that operate the service, currently; The Pride of the Tyne (1993) and The Spirit of the Tyne (2007). Usually only one ferry is in operation at a time, although both will be used during peak periods to operate a shuttle service. Also, if The Pride of the Tyne is in use of Private Hire/Rivertrip etc. the Spirit of the Tyne will operate the standard ferry service.
Each trip, the Shields Ferry travels 770 metres across the Tyne.
Passengers can transfer to the 333 bus service at North Shields ferry landing to be taken direct to the town centre and metro station. The alternative to this is a short 5-10 minute walk via the steep hill of Borough Road.

Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

The Shields Ferry
Today we are at South Shields across the river Tyne from Northumbrain quay, the Newcastle cruise terminal. The Customs House is now a restaurant and entertainment venue. The Bronze statue of a seaman. This the Merchant Navy Memorial, unveiled by Countess Mountbatten 1990. We are about to take the ferry across the Tyne to North shields. There have been ferries across the Tyne since the 14th century, however, the Shields ferry is the only service that remains. The southern terminal is located near the Customs house. The ferry service makes just under 25,000 journeys a year and carries nearly 400,000 passengers. Two vessels currently operate the service, Pride of the Tyne, built in 1993 and Spirit of the Tyne, built in 2007. Usually, only one ferry is in operation at a time, although both are used during peak periods. The service typically operates every 30 minutes with a 7 minute crossing time. The two ancient lighthouses were used as navigational aids in time gone by
The fishing fleet still survives here in spite of the EEC thou sadly diminished. The North shields memorial statue to fishermen lost at sea was unveiled in September of 2017. North Shields is known for its many fish restaurants, Hope you like this breath look at North Shields and the Tyne side ferry.

Built around the historic Albert Edward Dock, Royal Quays Marina is now widely regarded as the premier boating facility in the north of England. Situated close to the River Tyne entrance, the Marina is ideally placed for access to the open sea and for cruising on the sheltered waters of the River Tyne.
On Day of filming (25/05/17) not only was i lucky with the weather, but i was also lucky to see the cruise ship 'Balmoral' (Fred Olsen cruise lines) was docked along with the usual Amsterdam Ferry. I shall be making a separate video soon focusing on the Balmoral Cruise ship, so watch this space because she is a beauty.

Smiths Dock, North Shields, England
The former North Shields based ship repair yard Smiths Dock has been transformed. This historic Tyneside shipyard is being restored to its former glory and brought back to life as a brand new riverside neighbourhood.
Centred around three dock basins, which will form the heart of a lively community, you’ll find contemporary family homes, thoughtfully designed public spaces and plenty of places to eat, drink and play.
What’s more, the long term transformation of Smith’s Dock will open up new connections along the river between Fish Quay and Royal Quays and from the town centre down to the waterfront.

BBC Newcastle presenter Anna Foster driving the Shields Ferry
BBC presenters Alfie Joey and Anna Foster have been put through their paces driving the Shields Ferry.
Alfie and Anna, who host BBC Radio Newcastle’s breakfast show, got the chance to take the controls for an impromptu lesson under the close supervision of the crew.
They piloted Spirit of the Tyne to the mouth of the River Tyne as part of a feature for BBC Newcastle.
They were given access to the vessel’s wheelhouse and how to steer the vessel using its modern joystick-style control desk.
