Hiking on Hokkaido, Japan's Far North. Hokkaido is the northernmost of Japan's five major islands and second largest after Honshu (the main island). Hokkaido covers about 32,000 square miles--about the same size as the state of South Carolina. Hokkaido comprises about 20 per cent of Japan's total land area, but only about 5% of Japan's population lives there. Hokkaido is host to six national parks covering about 1,950 square miles. The largest is Daisetsuzan National Park at 875 square miles. The traverse across the high Daisetsuzan volcanic plateau is one of the finest high country hikes in Japan. Other noteworthy hikes on Hokkaido include the climb of Mount Tarumae (whose summit overlooks the Shikotsu crater lake in Shikotsu-Toya National Park), the hike to the summit of Meakandake, an active volcano in Akan National Park, and the hike to the top of Mount Rausu which offer expansive views over the Sea of Okhotsk and the wild Shiretoko Peninsula, a World Heritage Site. Im Daisetsuzan-Nationalpark auf Hokkaido habe ich den Asahi-Dake bei eiskaltem Wind und dichtem Nebel bestiegen. Oben angekommen verflüchtigte sich glücklicherweise die Nebelwand und auf einmal hatte ich einen traumhaften Ausblick auf den weitläufigen Nationalpark. Heil wieder unten an der Ropeway angekommen, sehe ich doch sichtlich erschöpft aus. ????

In the Daisetsuzan National Park on Hokkaido I climbed the Asahi-Dake in a cold wind and a thick fog. Fortunately, the fog wall disapeard and suddenly I had a fantastic view over the huge national park. I made it back down, but I looked visibly exhausted. ????

Daisetsuzan, Hokkaidō: Japan’s Earliest Autumn Foliage | Nippon.com: Japan in Video
The Daisetsuzan Volcanic Group is a set of peaks in central Hokkaidō that rise to a height of around 2,000 meters. With their combination of elevation and northerly latitude, they display the earliest autumn foliage of any place in Japan. Around the beginning of September this year, the area near the summit of Mount Kuro (Kurodake, 1,984 m) was already heralding the onset of autumn with the red leaves of its alpine bearberry (“urashima tsutsuji”) plants. As the mornings and evenings get colder, the foliage gets brighter. Other plants, such as Japanese rowan (“nanakamado”) and Middendorff weigela (“ukon utsugi”) also take on autumnal hues, and over the course of about a month the reds and yellows spread down to the foot of the mountain.
A seven-minute ride in a ropeway gondola takes visitors from the Sōunkyō Onsenkyō hot spring resort at the base to Kurodake Station at an elevation of 1,300 meters, where they can enjoy a view of the summit from an observation deck. From there they can ride a two-person chairlift to a spot about 200 meters higher, where they can take in a panoramic view of the colorful slopes.
