Oni oi shiki Driving out the devil ceremony Yakushiji, Nara 鬼追式 薬師寺 奈良市 by Kari Gröhn karigrohncom
Oni-oi-shiki (Driving out the devil ceremony) Yakushiji, Nara 鬼追式 薬師寺 奈良市 by Kari Gröhn karigrohncom
During the Onioishiki Ceremony at Yakushiji temple the oni (demons) run around and bang the blazing torches and shake the long bamboo poles letting out sparks from burning baskets of dried grass. In the end, the demons are dispelled by the Buddhist deity Bishamonten 毘沙門天 who punish evildoers.
Demons in Japanese lore wander between the living and the dead. Sometimes they do good deeds in the world, and some demons are the root of all disasters, both natural and man-made. The oni hunt the souls of those who did evil things in their lives.
Yakushiji 薬師寺
Yakushiji is one of the most famous imperial and ancient Buddhist temples of Nara. It was built in Fujiwarakyo, Japan's old capital in the Hakuo period, from 680 to 698. In 710, when the capital moved to Nara, the temple was also moved there.
A fire destroyed most buildings in 973 and the main Kondo hall in 1528. The main hall was rebuilt in the 1970s and the whole temple is now completely restored.
Toutou 東塔 (East Pagoda) is the only original building. It is thought as one of the finest pagodas in Japan. Yakushiji provides a beautiful contrast of two three-storied pagodas: the original east pagoda and the red-and-green west pagoda.

JAPAN: RELIGIOUS CULT COMPOUND BECOMES TOURIST ATTRACTION
Japanese/Nat
Villagers living near the Mount Fuji compound of the Aum doomsday cult want the government to disband the sect and confiscate its land.
Cult guru Shoko Asahara - who is believed to have masterminded the nerve gas attacks on the Tokyo subway - was arrested last week at the sect headquarters by the village of Kamikuishiki.
Since the nerve gas attacks the village has been thrust into the media spotlight but locals want life to return to normal and the remaining Aum followers out.
Mount Fuji -- it's one of Japan's main tourist attractions.
Scores of city dwellers leave Tokyo and head out near its white peaks for weekends of peace and quiet - and to pursue their favourite sports.
But these paragliders also have the perfect bird's eye view of the Aum cult compounds which lie in the shadow of Mount Fuji.
Sect leader Shoko Asahara reckoned he would be able to free fly within three years, claiming he could already levitate.
But now he's grounded in police custody - and likely to face charges of murder and attempted murder for the nerve gas attack last March.
Since March there has not been much peace or quiet in Kamikuishiki.
Police and an army of reporters, photographers and cameramen descended on the farming village near Asahara's headquarters - plus hundreds of sightseers turned up for a look.
The local supermarket has never been so busy with sales doubling in the last two months.
Manager Motoaki Tsunoda has been rushed off his feet - but he doesn't expect things to slow down for a while.
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
The boom will continue until the end of this year whether I like it or not because the Japanese are really curious, they want to see something weird. It is a little bit rude to my customers but they want to see some strange and terrible things.
SUPER CAPTION: Motoaki Tsunoda, Store Manager
Locals can't wait for life to get back to normal - they say their village has become famous for the wrong reasons.
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
Because of the incident, Kamikuishiki has become really famous but I want it to be popular because of its products not because of its cult compound.
SUPER CAPTION: Kazuya Tamura, Local
Dairy farming is how most of the locals earn their living.
But the activities of the cult have encroached more and more on people's lives to the extent that a local anti-Aum committee was formed.
Signs in the area spell out the villagers' view of the cult.
New signs put up since Tuesday say 'Aum tell the truth' - replacing the old signs telling the sect they were not welcome in the area.
Locals are adamant - they want the cult out.
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
I really want everybody to leave here and maybe we can confiscate their land. Maybe the local or national government could purchase the cults land and use it to build a new factory.
SUPER CAPTION: Akiteru Watanabe, Farmer
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
The entire withdrawal (of Aum followers) is what I really want but some of the members have donated their houses and land to the cult so they have nowhere to go. This is not just an issue for us but also for the country as a whole.
SUPER CAPTION: Seiichi Takeuchi, Local Anti-Aum Organiser
With Asahara behind bars, the future of the cult is unclear. Japanese authorities are reportedly considering forcing it to disband.

The masks usually portrays old men, young women, and nonhuman (ghosts or demons) - The crafting of the masks is considered an art form in it's own way. Here's a look at some of them. - Enjoy!

This video is about Japanese Traditional Dance
Japanese traditional dance has a long history, the oldest known ones may be among those transmitted through the kagura tradition, or folk dances relating to food producing activities such as planting rice (dengaku) and fishing, including rain dances.[1] There are large number of these traditional dances, which are often subfixed -odori, -asobi, and -mai, and may be specific to a region or village.[1] Mai and Odori are the two main groups of Japanese dances, and the term Buyō (舞踊) was coined in modern times as a general term for dance, by combining mai (舞, which can also be pronounced bu) and odori (踊, can also be pronounced yō).[2]
Mai is a more reserved genre of dance that often has circling movements, and dances of the Noh theatre are of this tradition.[2] A variation of the Mai style of Japanese dance is the Kyomai or Kyoto-style dance. Kyomai developed in the 17th century Tokugawa cultural period. It is heavily influenced by the elegance and sophistication of the manners often associated with the Imperial Court in Kyoto.[citation needed] Odori has more vigorous stepping movements and is more energetic, and dances of the kabuki theatre belong to this category.[2]

She had proper makeup, her wig was styled to match, and the performance was outstanding to watch. Amazing result for only a few days of practice, don't you think?
