INCREDIBLE RYOKAN FEAST in Shikoku, Japan
Kagawa, Shikoku, Japan - On day three of our road trip around Shikoku we headed into the Iya Valley on one of the most beautiful drives of my life to experience the Vine Bridges of Iya Valley.
From there we go zip-lining at the Forest Adventure Iya Valley and then have a traditional Iya Valley style lunch.
Next up we venture into Kotohira to walk through the Konpirasan Buddhist and Shinto temple.
My favorite stop of the day was at our Ryokan in Kotohira where I had the best Ryokan dinner of my life!

In July, I spent a week road tripping around the smallest of the 4 major Japanese Islands - Shikoku. I was invited by the Shikoku Tourism Board to visit each of the 4 Shikoku Prefectures and discover everything there is to do in Shikoku.
It was very unique in comparison to my first Travel Deeper Japan trip where I visited the popular Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.
Shikoku feels much more remote and a true authentic Japan travel experience - If you ever have the chance, add Shikoku to your list!

四国遍路 Shikoku Henro PART ONE 発心 Awakening ( 1/4 )
四国遍路 Shikoku Henro PART ONE 発心 Awakening is the first episode of a 4 part documentary about the island of shikoku and its 88 temple pilgrimage.
I began my journey in october 2018 and it took 50 days to complete the 1250 km long pilgrimage from temple 1 back to temple 1.
The information provided in this video might be outdated by the time you watch it.
The route i follow is most of the time the official signposted route but i would walk detours from time to time to experience some more of the shikoku lifestyle.

Topographical Look at Where the 88 Temples are Located in Shikoku
On the way to Temple 88 be sure to stop at Maeyama Shikoku Pilgrimage Community Salon. It is about 10 kilometers before the temple and just after the Ohenro path splits and heads up the mountain. You can receive a certificate of completion for having walked the pilgrimage and also a badge for walking or biking. (Walking is a red badge; biking is green). Inside there is a 3-D topographical map of Shikoku with the temples situated on it. This video takes you through all 88 temples and their location around Shikoku.

Faith in Japan Shikoku Pilgrimage Japanology (四国遍路 Shikoku Henro)
The Shikoku Pilgrimage (四国遍路 Shikoku Henro) or Shikoku Junrei (四国巡礼) is a multi-site pilgrimage of 88 temples associated with the Buddhist monk Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi) on the island of Shikoku, Japan. A popular and distinctive feature of the island's cultural landscape, and with a long history, large numbers of pilgrims (known as henro (遍路)) still undertake the journey for a variety of ascetic, pious, and tourism-related purposes.[1] The pilgrimage is traditionally completed on foot, but modern pilgrims use cars, taxis, buses, bicycles, or motorcycles. The standard walking course is approximately 1,200 kilometres (750 mi) long and can take anywhere from 30 to 60 days to complete.
In addition to the 88 official temples of the pilgrimage, there are over 20 bangai — temples not considered part of the official 88. To complete the pilgrimage, it is not necessary to visit the temples in order; in some cases it is even considered lucky[citation needed] to travel in reverse order. Henro (遍路) is the Japanese word for pilgrim,[2] and the inhabitants of Shikoku call the pilgrims o-henro-san (お遍路さん), the o (お) being an honorific and the san (さん) a title similar to Mr. or Mrs.. They are often recognizable by their white clothing, sedge hats, and kongō-zue or walking sticks. Alms or osettai are frequently given. Many pilgrims begin and complete the journey by visiting Mount Kōya in Wakayama Prefecture, which was settled by Kūkai and remains the headquarters of Shingon Buddhism. The 21 kilometres (13 mi) walking trail up to Koya-san still exists, but most pilgrims use the train.

What to Know About The Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage in Japan
The entire pilgrimage stretches around the perimeter of Shikoku and visits 88 temples. The majority of pilgrims (called O Henro) visit by bus or car, not on foot. I can understand why after undertaking a small portion. It is rated strenuous to challenging.
The best part is the camaraderie with the predominately Japanese pilgrims, little ryokans/minshuku and excellent food.
