SHILIN NIGHT MARKET Taipei Street Food Tour in Taiwan - vlog #46
Today we'll be heading to the legendary Shilin Night Market 士林觀光夜市 in Taipei Taiwan. Like most night markets in Taiwan, Shilin Night Market has tons of Taiwanese street food options! This one of the largest night markets in Taiwan and one of the most popular ones to visit. There are two main sections from what I experienced, the first being the outer Shilin Night Market where all the vendors and shops are outside and the 2nd being Shilin Night Market Food Court where there are a bunch of vendors and shops all housed in one massive building. We'll be exploring both areas in the video and trying out a bunch of food here!
If you do decide to visit here, remember to bring some cash because these places do not accept credit cards. Also pack a bit light and comfy because you'll be on your feet most of the time and there's quite a bit to explore out here. Do come in the afternoon or evening, it is called a night market for a reason. Some of the shops start to open and if you come during the afternoon I would suggest visiting the Shilin Night Market Food Court first since most of the street food vendors there are open.
Some of the things that I really liked here are the Taiwanese Fried Chicken from Hometown Barbecue Chicken. The Taiwanese Fried Chicken is so crispy and the bbq sauce that is covering is sweet and salty and on top of it the piece of chicken is so massive! This was definitely worth the wait and I can see why there was a line here for this.
Another thing that you should probably try whether it's in Shilin Night Market or any other Night Market is the Stinky Tofu 臭豆腐 This dish is really smelly, however surprisingly I got over the smell and it actually tastes really good. I don't know why, but it did haha. It's a signature dish here in Taiwan so maybe you might want to take on this stinky tofu challenge! I was able to get this inside of the Shilin Night Market Food Court at Zhong Cheng Hao. If you do visit this stall try their oyster omelette here as well if you haven't yet, this dish is really good. Also inside of the Food Court I recommend that you eat some grilled abalone and the oyster noodle soup, I really enjoyed eating both of those dishes here.
Outside of the market there were so many options that it was kind of ridiculous, my favorite food stands that I visited were the suckling roast pork stand and the Taiwanese Pork Pepper Bun stand. These two were phenomenal and I still miss eating these to this very day!
There were so many options here that I wanted to essentially try everything, but my stomach can only handle so much haha. Is this the best night market? Each Night Market in Taiwan have their own feel and atmosphere so do come here to check it out, it's really fun especially if you love food! I'll let you be the judge on your favorite night market!

Taiwanese Street Food in Taipei, Taiwan at Shilin Night Market (士林夜市) taste test challenge video transcript:
Alright, so it has been a few hours since we last ate and tonight we're going out for Taiwanese street food (台灣街頭食品). So we're heading to the Shilin Night Market (士林夜市) and we're going to take the MRT to get there. Let's go eat.
Sam may be feeling a little bit hangry right now.
So to get to the Shilin Night Market (士林夜市) you want to take the red line to Jiantan Station (劍潭站) and then take exit 1.
So we have just arrived at the Shilin Night Market (士林夜市) and it is still quite early. It is 4:30 PM. Most of the stalls start opening closer to five o'clock and things will only continue to get busier as the night goes on.
So we are having some kind of Barbecue roll with green onion (黑胡椒豬肉卷) in it.
So there is one drink I've been wanting to try ever since we got to Taipei (臺北市). I love bubble tea (珍珠奶茶) and apparently it originated here so voila.
Look at that. Look at that. I got one with brown sugar so you can see me mixing it. You can see the brown sugar. So good. On the sides and then you can see the like the pearl tapioca jellies at the bottom.
So for our next Taiwanese street snack we are having Taiwan fried chicken (鹹酥雞) and this was quite the process. Like first he took the chicken breaded it, deep-fried it and then he took a pan and added the sauce. We got sweet chili and then pan-fried the chicken even further in the glaze.
So Sam is leading the way with this one. What are we having next? Alright moment of truth. We've been playing it kind of tame. Playing it kind of safe so far. We're going right in to the classic Taiwanese street food (台湾街头食品) here. We are having Stinky Tofu (臭豆腐). Oh my.
So if you've never tried this before I was reading on wikipedia earlier this afternoon that it smells something like stinky feet or garbage. Rotting garbage.
And you should try it if you're in Taipei (臺北市). Why not right? Yep.
Okay. So after stinky tofu (臭豆腐) comes the reward. Although that being said I don't deserve a reward because I didn't try the tofu. But we decided to get something sweet instead. This is for you Sam.
I'm going to sample it for you to make sure it is okay. So we got a crepe (蛋餅) with oreo ice cream, Nutella, banana, whipped cream, chocolate powder. Yeah, it was the whole process of making it was pretty fancy.
So we've already had dessert but we thought 'hey' there is always room for one more. Dessert just keeps rolling. And this is definitely the most colorful thing we've seen out here at the Shilin Night Market (士林夜市) so far.
So apparently if you can see here. These are pieces of strawberry that have been put on a skewer and these are candied (糖葫蘆) or called a toffee kind of fruit. Yeah.
Hahaha.
Whoopsies.
Oh my gosh. So what do you think?
I'm making a mess on someone's storefront.
Do you like it? Yeah, it is good.
But we better run off now.
So that is a wrap from Shilin Night Market (士林夜市). We really enjoyed eating all of the different Taiwanese street food (臺灣菜) and we're going to be eating up at a lot more night markets here in Taipei (臺北市) so stay tuned for that.

Taiwan Street Food and Attractions - BLOWTORCH Steak at Shilin Night Market! (Day 2)
We first visited Longshan Temple and then had amazing Taiwan street food at Shilin Night Market!

►Subscribe to my videos:
Day 2 of traveling in Taiwan was a big sightseeing day. We went to Longshan Temple, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial, at dumplings, and finished with the famous Shilin Night Market.
The first place we went was Longshan Temple, one of the most famous and most popular temples in the heart of Taipei, and it’s typically included as one of the main things to do in Taipei. Since we were staying in Ximending, an area not too far from Longshan Temple, we decided to walk there, but it’s also easily accessible by Taipei Metro. The temple was extremely busy and packed full of people. The busyness created a real buzz and interesting feeling at the temple. After spending about 30 minutes at Longshan Temple we moved on our next Taipei attraction.
Our next stop on this sightseeing day in Taipei was Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, one of the most famous landmarks in the entire city. Again, we easily got there by metro, and then we could just walk around on foot once we got there. On the same compound you’ll also find the National Theater and a number of beautiful buildings, but the main building, colored white and blue and that looks like a castle is Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. We happened to arrive right on the hour so we caught a bit of the changing of the guards ceremony, but it also takes places every hour if you go.
For lunch we walked over to a restaurant called Jin Ji Yuan (好公道金雞園), which is a local restaurant serving a variety of Taiwanese food, but especially known for their version of xiao long bao, which are Taiwanese soup dumplings. It only took about 10 minutes to walk to the restaurant from Chiang Kai-shek, and it was well worth the walk as we were all hungry. They were cooking all the food downstairs, and they led us upstairs to eat - where there was a full dining room. The menu was in both Chinese and English, but the menu checksheet to choose the dishes we wanted to order was all in Chinese, so we just did our best to choose the same ones. We order a couple steamed baskets of xiao long bao and a few side dishes including some of their famous fried chicken. Everything was delicious, and this was one of our first full meals of Taiwanese food.
After lunch we took a short rest back at our hotel for a few hours, and then made our way over to Shlin Night Market, often considered the biggest and the most legendary night market in Taiwan’s long list of amazing night markets. We arrived in the late afternoon, and already, there was a massive crowd there ready to go shopping and to eat snacks out of control. I was amazing at the amount of people and the amount of food available at the Shilin Night Market - and even though some people say it’s touristy, and that locals have given up on Shilin Night Market, I think it’s still quite popular with locals. While at Shilin Night Market I was able to eat some delicious Taiwanese street food, and I had a piece of stinky tofu (which I didn’t know was stinky tofu at the time of eating it). Shilin Night Market is a thrill to visit, one of the amazing things to do when you’re in Taipei.
That was it for Day 2 of this Taiwan travel and food guide vlog series. Thank you for watching!

⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Exploring Taipei, Taiwan : Taipei Main Station to Shilin Night Market (December 15, 2019)
As a native New Yorker traveling to Taiwan for the first time, I take the Taipei Metro from Taipei Main Station to the Shilin Night Market during my first day.
From Wikipedia:
Shilin (Shihlin) Night Market (Chinese: 士林夜市; pinyin: Shìlín Yèshì) is a night market in Shilin District, Taipei, Taiwan, and is often considered to be the largest and most famous night market in Taiwan.
The night market encompasses two distinct sections sharing a symbiotic relationship: a section formerly housed in the old Shilin Market building, containing mostly food vendors and small restaurants; and the surrounding businesses and shops selling other nonfood items. The food court holds 539 stalls, and the second floor serves as a parking lot for 400 cars.
In addition to the food court, side streets and alleys are lined with storefronts and roadside stands. Cinemas, video arcades, and karaoke bars are also prevalent in the area. Like most night markets in Taiwan, the local businesses and vendors begin opening around 16:00. As students begin returning home from school, crowds reach their peak between 20:00 and 23:00. Businesses continue operating well past midnight, closing around 01:00 or 02:00.
Tourist traffic has increased in recent years due to the opening of the Taipei Metro system. The night market is closest to Jiantan Station on Tamsui–Xinyi line (Tamsui/Red Line), and can be seen from the station platform.
