18 Hole Shillong Golf Course in Meghalaya, India
Close to the Polo Ground is one of the most attractive locales of the town, the Shillong Golf Club.
Shillong Golf Course one of the oldest and best natural golf course in the world is considered to be the Gleneagle of the East by the United States Golf Association and Museum. The site where the Golf Course is located provides a scenic view. It was set in an undulating valley covered with thick groves of pine and rhododendron trees at an altitude of 5200 ft in 1898 as a 9 hole course and later converted into a 18 hole course in 1924 by Captain Jackson and C. K. Rhodes. Golf Link in Shillong was the first 18-hole golf course in India. But it is not just for people who can swing the golf club; it is open to common people as well. The extraordinary beauty of the place invites not just golfers but everyone who cares about beauty.
Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya, one of the smallest states in India and home to the Khasis. It is the headquarters of the East Khasi Hills district. Shillong is the 330th most populous city in India with population of 143,007 according to the 2011 census. It is said that the rolling hills around the town reminded the European settlers of Scotland. Hence, Shillong is known as Scotland of the East. The density of Meghalaya state in the current decade is 342 per sq mile. Shillong was the capital of Assam, but after the state was split as Assam and Meghalya meaning 'The abode of the clouds', it became the first capital of the newly formed State of Meghalaya . Located in undulating pine covered hills, the city has a milder climate than tropical India. The city center is 1496 meters above sea level.
The British legacy is still visible in architecture and food habits of population. The Assam style houses with slanting roofs, large number of windows and wooden floors look like a piece of art which happens to be very good idea, considering Shillong lies in a area where rains and earthquakes are very common. Shillong receives heavy rainfalls during monsoon and the rainy season usually lasts longer than rest of India. An umbrella is therefore a necessity while packing your bags. Although people avoid the rainy season, it is generally the time when city is clean and waterfalls are in full strength. Most of the Shillong population belong to Khasi tribe, who are predominantly Christian. There are significant Bengali and Nepali minorities. An interesting aspect of Khasis are that they are a matrilineal society - the mother is head of family, youngest daughter owns all the property and mothers surname is passed on to children.
Shillong is fast emerging as an education hub for the entire northeastern region. Important educational institutes like the Northeastern Hill University (NEHU), CMJ University, Martin Luther Christian University, Indian Institute of Management, National Institute of Technology, Shillong, Institute of Hotel Management (IHM),National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, English and Foreign Languages University, Shillong Campus, St. Edmund's College, St. Anthony's College, Shillong and several others college and engineering institution have been established here.

Shillong Golf Course - Golf Club on Hill Town Shillong in Meghalaya
Shillong Golf Course - Golf Club on Hill Town Shillong in Meghalaya (India).
Wonderful, amazing, outstanding Golf Course on Hill [approximately 5000ft above sea level] in Shillong (Meghalaya).
Shillong Golf Club & Golf Course is a must visit tourist place in Shillong. Must visit sightseeing spot in Shillong is Golf Course through which road goes.
Shillong Golf Course is close to the Polo Ground is one of the most attractive locales of the town, the Shillong Golf Club.
Shillong Golf Course one of the oldest and best natural golf course in the world is considered to be the Gleneagle of the East by the United States Golf Association and Museum. The site where the Golf Course is located provides a scenic view. Shillong Golf Course was set in an undulating valley covered with thick groves of pine and rhododendron trees at an altitude of 5200 ft in 1898 as a 9 hole course and later converted into a 18 hole course in 1924 by Captain Jackson and C. K. Rhodes. Golf Link in Shillong was the first 18-hole golf course in India. But it is not just for people who can swing the golf club; it is open to common people as well.
Shillong Golf Club was brought to Shillong in 1898 by a group of British civil service gentlemen who initially constructed a 9 hole course at an area called Laban. After the first world war Shillong gained popularity as a golf resort for European golfers from East Bengal and Calcutta & in 1924 the present 18 hole course with its picturesque club house was inaugurated. The layout of the new course was done by Capt. Jackson & C.K.Rhodes, who successfully preservied the natural beauty of the area while giving it an excellent layout. The course is set in an undulating valley covered with thick groves of pine and rhododendron trees. The tight fairways are carpeted with an indigenous species of local grass which hardens the soil and makes the course tough to play. The longest hole on the course is the 594 yards, sixth, which makes it an extremely trying hole, and also one of the longest in India. The tight fairways are difficult to negotiate in any case, but the task is made even more trying by the number of ‘out-of-bounds’ streams that criss-cross almost every fairway. Most of the approaches are uphill shots & even the low handicappers opt to play safe. The greens are lightning fast & are invariably surrounded by heavy sand bunkers. The 372 yards, par four, 9th hole is a dog leg, and one of the most picturesque on the course. The tee off is from a pine grove elevated some 200 feet above the fairway. The tiger line is onto a steep ridge and to the left of the row of pine tree which demarcate the common eighth and ninth fairway. The second shot is placed into the elbow of the dog leg which is in a valley, and from where the green is now visible on a hillock ahead. The third stroke has to be lofted to gain height as well as negotiate the tight fairway. It requires a good chip and a lucky putt to get a par on this hole, as the area around the green is uneven, and the green itself extremely fast. Not only is the Shillong course scenic and enjoyable, it’s also challenging. The biggest obstructions is rain what with it being just 56 kms from Cherrapunji – the wettest place in the world.
The Shillong Golf Club is one of the many attractions of Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, a North-Eastern State of India. Founded by the British way back in 1898, with the idea of cooler golfing conditions during the hot and humid months of Indian summer, the 18 hole golf course is set in serene and picturesque surroundings at over 5000 feet. Pine and Rhododendron trees line the the hilly layout which has a wonderful natural feel. Golfing here is a highlight in a trip to this beautiful part of the world, which the British apparently likened to Wales !

Shillong to Garo hills, Episode 10 | Shillong Golf course, Mawphanlur
We did this journey from shillong to Tura, ie from East Khasi hills to west Garo hills. Though the route from Guwahati is also nice but this one is better in terms of scenic views that you can enjoy.
If you travel via this route you will get to see Mawphalur on the way, this is such a beautiful place. If you are taking the route to travel from Shillong to Garo hills i will suggest you to start the journey early in the morning, so that you reach the destination on time which means before sunset.
This video has short length: Earlier i tried merging this journey with next day's activities but then the length of the episode was turning out to reach 30 min level, which is very long, people lose interest in such long episodes, so i was left with no choice but to break this into 2 episodes.
Following are the details of the places visited by us as part of this journey.

Shillong Golf Course AMAZING VIEW (SHILLONG , MEGHALAYA, INDIA)
Shillong Golf Course: Shillong has one of the largest golf courses (the world's wettest) in Asia: Gleneagles of the East. It enjoys the rare distinction of being one of the few natural golf courses in Asia. Not only is the Shillong Golf Course scenic and enjoyable, it is also challenging. A group of British civil service officers introduced golf to Shillong in 1898 by constructing a nine-hole course. The present 18-hole course was inaugurated in 1924. The course is set in a valley covered with pine and rhododendron trees. The tight fairways, carpeted with a local grass which hardens the soil, are difficult to negotiate. The number of out-of-bounds streams that criss-cross every fairway makes it all the more trying. Obstructions come in the form of bunkers, trees and rain. The longest hole is the 6th, which is a gruelling 594 yards. Shillong Golf Course is considered to be the Glen Eagle of the East at the United States Golf Association Museum. It was set in a valley at an altitude of 5200 ft in 1898 as a nine-hole course and later converted into an 18-hole course in 1924 by Captain Jackson and C. K. Rhodes.
