Saiki City, in Oita Prefecture, is located on Japan's southern island of Kyushu, about 780 km south-west of Tokyo, and 150km east of Fukuoka City. It is the fifth largest city by population and the largest city by area in Kyushu located in the eastern prefecture of Oita, and the centre of the south-east region of Oita. Saiki is pleasantly located on Saiki bay, part of the Bungo Channel that feeds the Inland Sea of Japan (Setonaikai). Situated on the coastline, Saiki experiences mild weather all year round, due to the influence of the warm currents along the Bungo Channel. Rainfall is most prevalent from June to early July, and the chance of snow is limited. Due to is close proximity to the sea, Saiki City is famous for delicious seafood and beautiful coast lines. Korea’s easternmost islets are again drawing attention for ecological value, as rare aquatic species with unique appearances and names have been observed in the clean waters near the rocky outcroppings.

Dokdo Island is situated in the middle of the vast blue ocean. It is an ecological treasure trove inhabited by roughly 590 species of animals and plants. A picturesque scene unfolds under the sea. Schools of fish in various colors swim about in leisure. A black sea bream, a native of Dokdo, takes a break between the rocks. Coral reefs, a resting place for fish, adorn the underwater world with splendid colors. In particular, the ocean beneath Dokdo Island is teeming with living organisms, because it is a place where warm and cold currents meet. Last year, the government discovered three unrecorded species, including paranamixis shrimp. Recently, an undocumented species of the moss fringehead, indigenous to Dokdo, was identified for the first time. Moss fringeheads, a fish in the order of perciformes, are characterized by cockscomb-like tentacles. The government has decided to name the species the Dokdo moss fringehead and register it in a list of aquatic organisms.

Resilient Bangladesh: Fishermen cope with rougher seas
Mohammed Illias has fished the waters of Magna River since he was 12. To better support his family, he saved money to purchase his own boat. However, in 2008, he and 10 other fishermen were caught in a terrible storm. The boat was badly damaged and began to sink. Luckily, all of the fisherman on-board survived.

With the help of local and international NGOs, Mohammed was able to restore his boat. By reinforcing the foundation with steel bars, his boat was made stronger. He feels confident that his boat will now be able to withstand the rough waves. As an added result, the boat now allows him travel further out into the sea and increase his catch.
