Shimabara Catholic Church
The only Catholic Church in Shimabara. At first I thought it was a lot older than it actually is, thats why I took the video... Apparently this church was started around 1932 and finished around 1997, are at least how we see it today. When I was there I kept noticing the steel and iron beams and supports and was suspicious of the age.
The church has more relics of the Shimabara Rebellion and supposed written history of the original missions from the 1500's. Most of the stained glass also represents these histories.
I could not understand what the sister was explaining, but kept recording for you guys to hear.
At one point I think she noted there are only about 20 practicing Catholics living in Shimabara now.

OKAGO: The 309 Martyrs - Short Documentary Film
At the beginning of the Edo period, more than 300 people were martyred at Okago.
The history of this period of persecution and oppression, the way people protected their faith and their noble character, must not be lost but preserved for future generations.
The footage of the diorama appearing in the video was taken on Okago Christian Museum in Fujisawa Town, Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture, Japan.

Bonenkai in Shimabara, Japan
This was my high schools bonenkai held in Shimabara. The cost was around ¥5000, or ¥2500 if you part of the teacher union, and was optional to attend. This one was mainly seafood and I ate so much the alcohol had no affect on me :P
Also, I won the second round of bingo and walked away with a ¥2000 gift certificate to Tsutaya (a Japanese bookstore place).
Wikipedia: A bōnenkai (忘年会 literally forget the year gathering?) is a Japanese drinking party that takes place at the end of the year, and is generally held among groups of co-workers or friends. The purpose of the party, as its name implies, is to forget the woes and troubles of the past year, and hopefully look to the new year, usually by consumption of large amounts of alcohol. A bōnenkai does not take place on any specific day, but they are usually held in December.
I felt strange recording this, so sorry about the cuts and shaky video.
The Shimabara Rebellion Part 2
Taken from the documentary Japan: Memoirs of a Lost Empire. Two clips detailing the Japanese Christians who existed during the Tokugawa Shogunate.
JAPAN: Was being Christian in Japan once deadly?
Centuries ago, a tenth of all of Japan's Christians died in a single event: the Shimabara Rebellion. At the end of World War Two, it only took nine seconds.

Shimabara Castle, Japan, 2019
Shimabara Castle (島原城 Shimabara-jō), also known as Moritake Castle (森岳城 Moritake-jō) and Takaki Castle (高来城 Takaki-jō), is a Japanese castle located in Shimabara ... Shimabara Castle is a flatland castle (平城 Hirajiro), located between Ariake Bay and Mount Unzen. The outer moats, some 15 meters deep and between 30–50 meters wide, extended 360 meters east-west and 1260 meters north-south, with the enclosed area divided into three baileys. The walls extended for 3900 meters and had 16 yagura of various sizes at key points. The main donjon had five stories, and a height of 33 meters, and was connected to two secondary keeps, each with three stories. In terms of scale, it was far larger than normal for a daimyō with revenues of only 40,000 koku. Wkipedia
Agricultural Festival in Shimabara Japan
This was the agricultural festival one of my high schools had. The students had the opportunity to show off the things they had learned and created over the year and even got to sell a lot of it.
The Taiko club performed quite a few times and I tried to catch most of them.
There was a market area, two restaurants, school club stations with activities, Taiko performances throughout the days, a petting zoo, and an FFJ competition with cows (a second year girl took first, and a second year girl took second).

Since Japans rulers outlawed Christianity in the sixteenth century, believers have hidden their faith. But what began as Christianity has evolved into something quite different in the meantime.
The hidden Christians worship not one but two Virgin Marys. The religion survived because Buddhist priests turned a blind eye, allowing people to ostensibly embrace Buddhism while remaining clandestine Christians. We dont expel them or tell them to quit their faith.
