The Water City | Gujo Hachiman 名水の町・郡上八幡
Gujo Hachiman, also known as the Water City! It's just about in the middle of Gifu Prefecture, and I highly, highly recommend visiting!! It's a mountain city with rivers running through the middle. There are koi fish everywhere, you can jump into the water, and the are tons of old-fashioned stores with awesome things to look at. I absolutely loved it!

There is a sea in front of Shimabara Castle, and Mt.Unzen is behind.The castle was completed in 1624. Christianity were banned through mass execution by Matsukura. In addition, the construction cost of the castle put a heavy burden on the people.This repression was a main factor leading to Shimabara rebellion.The rebellion was suppressed, but Matsukura family was destroyed by orders of Shogun in Edo (Tokyo).
Harie Shozu-no-sato - Shiga - 針江生水の郷 - 4K Ultra HD
Not too far from the beautiful torii of Shirahige Shrine, you will find the small village of Harie and its unique feature: free water! People living in Harie are very proud of their spring water. They use it daily to not only drink but also wash their vegetables and even keep Koi Carp as personal pets. Limiting Harie to its gorgeous spring water will not be fair, as Harie is a magnificent little village frozen in time ideal to do away with your stress and worries.

My JET Apartment in Shimabara, Japan
This is my apartment while on the JET program.
My apartment is subsidized by the board of education. It is not required that I live there either and have the option to move whenever I want, but you cant beat that price!
This apartment was built in 1982 and survived the erupting volcano in the 90's, so just keeping that in mind gives me solace that the building is ok.
Now for a price breakdown of living in Japan, at least for me.

Since I was put on the wait list and was eventually sent to Japan after the other ALTs arrived, my predecessor had already sold his things. He was under the assumption I would not arrive until the winter break. My predecessor did not live in this same apartment, he started out in one in the same building on the 3rd floor and eventually decided to get his own place at a newer complex. A family with children lived here before me. Other ALT had a stockpile of furniture and goods to choose from, but I was welcomed by an almost completely empty apartment. The same night I got here the JTEs took me out to buy some necessities, such as bedding and kitchen wares. The apartment did not have an aircon, and after suffering from a few weeks of stifling nights I decided I needed to get one (I would take really cold showers before bed to cool me off so I could sleep).
My advice: hit up the used furniture and 100 yen shops when you get here before going for new items, you'll save so much more money.
Mount Unzen & Shimabara Castle, Japan
Mt. Unzen is an active volcano made up of several overlapping stratovolcanoes. Located near Shimabara city, this is the hub of the area's volcanic activity. The mountains formed are breathtaking, and the local onsen were also formed thanks to this volcanic action.The volcano was also active as recently as 1990–1995. In 1991, the large eruption from Mt. Unzen's Fugendake generated a pyroclastic flow that killed 43 people, including three Shimabara Castle, situated in the center of the old town in Shimabara in Nagasaki Prefecture, Kyushu, is a classic example of the developed art of the Japanese castle with huge stone walls and deep moats. Castle's construction began in 1618 and was completed seven years later in 1625.

Who knew koi were farmed in the mountains? The city Ojiya in Niigata gets completely frozen over in winter, but evidently koi are fine with that! These nishikigoi here in Niigata are apparently the original koi that all Japanese koi fish were bred from.
