Izumo Grand Shrine ( 出雲大社 )
Description
————————————————————————
Along with Ise Jingu, this shrine represents the shrines of Japan. Of all the other shrines in the country, Izumo Shrine, the gathering spot of the gods, has a noticeably sacred air about it. Be filled with more spiritual power in the renovated main hall.

JAPAN MUST VISIT: Adachi & Izumo shrine - National treasure & Japan’s Best garden
#japan #travel #Matsue
I stayed in Matsue, Japan and spent the day visiting Adachi museum garden which was incredibly beautiful and impressive to walk through. I also visited Izumo Taisha (Shrine) which is one of Japan's most important and impressive shinto shrines.
If you are staying in the area then these two can be combined for what might be a perfect day trip in Japan's less visited area.

Izumo Taisha_Izumo Grand Shrine_ in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture_Japan
Izumo-taisha ( Izumo Grand Shrine?, also Izumo Oyashiro) is one of the most ancient and important Shinto shrines in Japan. No record gives the date of establishment. Located in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, it is home to two major festivals. It is dedicated to the god Okuninushi (Okuninushi-no-mikoto), famous as the Shinto deity of marriage.
A style of architecture, taisha-zukuri, takes its name from the main hall of Izumo-taisha. That hall, and the attached buildings, were designated National Treasures of Japan in 1952. According to tradition, the hall was previously much taller than presently. The discovery in the year 2000 of the remains of enormous pillars has lent credence to this.more info visit:

Izumo Taisha Japan Ancient's Super Shrine
Izumo Taisha is also known as Izumo Ōyashiro and is perhaps the oldest Shintō shrine of all. It is second in importance only to Ise-jingū, the home of the sun goddess
Amaterasu. This shrine, dedicated to Ōkuninushi, God of marriage and bringer of good fortune, is as old as Japanese recorded history – there are references to Izumo in
the Kojiki, Japan's oldest book – and its origins stretch back into the age of the gods.
Visitors to the shrine summon Ōkuninushi by clapping four times rather than the usual two. According to tradition, the deity ceded control over Izumo to the sun
goddess's line – he did this on the condition that a huge temple would be built in his honour, one that would reach as high as the heavens.

【The Shrine of Death?】 The Mysteries of Izumo Grand Shrine
Izumo shrine is known as one of the most important shrine in Japan.
But its origin is full of mysteries.
Check this video before visiting there!!

Izumo shrine is located in Shimane prefecture. Probably I have to confess that Shimane is not so easy to get to, in addition Izumo shrine is not so close to the center of the prefecture.
But I cannot recommend you too much to visit there, because this shrine plays obviously important role in our culture, history, and religion as well.
The importance of the shrine can be seen from the word Kannnazuki. It’s about our way for counting months. At the present day, we count months along the way of Arabic numerals.
But in the past, we’ve described months in completely different way.
Firstly Mutsuki, then comes Kisaragi, and the other terms follows subsequently, and Kannnazuki which I mentioned just before, indicates October.
As for the meaning of the word Kannazuki.
The word consist of 3 letters. God No Month.
There’s no god.
Behind this strange expression, there’s a folk lore.
According to which, all the gods in Japan get together at Izumo shrine in October every year without fail. Izumo shrine is such an important shrine.
It is said, a millions of God come to Izumo in order to discuss how the people’s destiny should be.
And it’s about the relationship as well. That’s the reason why Izumo shrine is known as the shrine for good relationship.
Incidentally, whereas October is called Kannnazuki in common, at Izumo it’s called Kamiarizuki which means There’re gods. Now you can guess reason.
Now we go on to the topics of the mysteries of Izumo shrine.
1. size of the shrine
At Izumo shrine you can see big.. whattmacallit on the floor.
This is the first mystery.
Well actually it is a big pillar, which consists of 3 pillars in ancient times.
Izumo shrine’s today’s building is not enormous, because it has been restored many times.
But you can imagine how gigantic it was.
Actually, at the museum beside the shrine, you can see a part of the real pillar which was excavated about 20 years ago. This is it.
It turned out that this pillar had been supporting the building in the 13th century.
Thus it became obvious there was a enormous shrine in ancient times.
2. strange way to worship
In Japan we've been living togher with Buddhism and Shintoism, and those 2 religions had been mixed so much. which makes today's Japanese culture more more complicated.
But anyway, Izumo shrine comes from Shintoism.
In shintoism, the way to worship is standardized.
2 times bow down, 2 times clap the hand, and worship, then 1 time bow in the end.
This the standard.
However at Izumo shrine, listen, 2 times bow down, nn that's same thing, but next 4 times handclaps. The rest remains same, so it's 2 times bow, 4 handclaps, worship, and 1 time bow.
What's happening here???
There's a extremely intersting point of view.
The obvious difference is the number of handclaps.
Usuallay it's 2 times, but at Izumo shrine 4 times.
I'd liket to call those numbers in Japanse language.
we call 2 ni.
and we call 4 either yon or shi.
shi should be remarked.
In Japanese there's a word with the completely same pronouciation.
It is death.
It's interesting, the number of handclaps can be associated with death.
And there's one more interesting fact.
It's about sacred rope.
Sacred rope itself indicates sanctuary.
It is probably hard to distinguish, but there's a standard way for tying up this rope.
Typicaclly, the thick part of the rope, with which you tye the rope up, comes to right side.
But in contrast, at Izumo srhine, it comes on the exact opposite side.
When it comes to death, or funeral rituals, we change the direction of many things on opposite side. So the sacred rope of Izumo Shrine, can be regarded, to indicate death as well.
Now we're facing a critiacal question.
Why on earth Death is evoked in such many ways at this shrine?
The secret lies in the ancient times, we have to refer to the myth in Japan.
According to the myth, the land of Japan had been governed and developped by a God called Okuninushi.
Okuninushi is the God at Izumo shrine by the way.
He had great power and many brothers. But one day another God called Ninigi plundered the land of Japan, and also Ninigi killed Okuninushi.
Whereas Okuninushi was killed, his emotion of anger remained.
And his anger was tremendous. feard so much.
So inorder to calm his anger down, Izumo shrine was constructed.
Now you can guess the reason of the big ancient building.
It's an exceptionally tremendous construction, but behind it, people or I should Ninigi feared his anger so much. And it is also understandalbe, why the shrine represents death.
