Iwami Kagura Performance in Masuda, Shimane.

During our visit to the small village Hikimi in Masuda City, we were invited to an Iwami Kagura performance by the local Michikawa Kagura Troupe. They performed two stories for us, Yamato Takeru and Yamato-no-Orochi.

And this is a video of our visit.



Mythology, commonly found amonst many cultures, tells the history of the people, the culture, and most importantly, its creation. Since the time of the gods, we have been retelling these myths about an unfathomable world that was. Recreating that world of Japanese mythology and its characters through the use of song and dance is Iwami Kagura.

Minoji House was a very wealthy farmer's house in mountain area in Masuda.
I am overwhelmed by that big roof ! The family lived there untill around 1962.

Shimane Prefecture

Shimane Prefecture is a prefecture of Japan located in the Chūgoku region on the main Honshu island. The capital is Matsue. It is the second least populous prefecture in Japan, after its eastern neighbor Tottori. The prefecture has an area elongated from east to west facing the Chūgoku Mountain Range on the south side and to the Sea of Japan on the north side. It is divided into the Izumo Region in the East, the Iwami Region in the West and the Oki Region, a small group of islands off the northern coast. Most of the cities are near the shoreline of the Sea of Japan. Izumo Taisha in Izumo City is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan.
The Oki Islands in the Sea of Japan are also part of Shimane Prefecture, which also claims to have jurisdiction over the South Korea-controlled island of Liancourt Rocks, Japanese: Takeshima(竹島)).

A steam engine train is passing in Tsuwano town toward Yamaguchi.
