We don't have anything here that isn't occurring locally in the waters, and we're quite strict on how we get animals we try and rescue large animals from fishing nets and from by-catch. We also try and show fishermen new ways of preserving things like rays and sharks which sometimes get tangled in nets. And we've also had some donations some beautiful animals that are brought in, and we have rehabilitated injured animals. The fishermen are just keen to come here and see things that they see every day.

This aquarium is actually built next to a village, a fishing village, where people from Sharjah use to live and work as fishermen and pearl divers for their living. That's why we brought actually so many of the artifacts or historical objects from the actual site, the fishing village, to this aquarium.

The mission of the aquarium actually is to educate people around the UAE, national and expatriates coming to the UAE about the local waters and what they can expect in the waters here. So instead of bringing other kinds of fish here at the aquarium and teaching people about different kinds that are around the world. We started with the concept we already have so actually we can educate them. Families can come here, actually the father for example and his son and can talk about the kinds that the father already knows and shares the information. It brings back the memories.
