Japanese Washi Paper Story | Shimanto River ★ ONLY in JAPAN
A short flight from Tokyo or Osaka brings you to Kochi Prefecture and the Shimanto River known as Japan's Last Clean Stream. There are no majors cities out here, just small towns full of delicious food and loads of sports and adventure! That's right, I've escaped the city and rented a car to travel from sea to mountain along this mythical river.
Up in the mountains of Yusuhara is where you'll find Rogier Uitenboogaart, a Dutch guy preserving the tradition of Traditional Tosa Washi Paper making. At his studio and Japanese inn, I got a chance to study washi paper making with him, collecting the nature of the Shimanto and adding it to the paper. See what we make!
The Shimanto River is the only major river in Japan without a dam, the water flowing from the origin in the mountains to the Pacific Ocean 200km away.
Sustainable logging and business is one reason the area remains as it did centuries ago.

The Shimanto River (四万十川 Shimanto-gawa?) is a river in western Kōchi Prefecture, Japan. 196 km in length, it has a watershed of 2,270 km². Its name is written with kanji meaning forty thousand and ten.
Since the river is remote from major cities and does not have any dams, it is sometimes referred to as the last clear stream of Japan. Fishing and production of nori is a thriving industry along the river. It has been named one of the Three Clear-Flowing Rivers in Japan, along with the Nagara River in Gifu Prefecture and the Kakita River (柿田川 Kakita-gawa) in Shizuoka Prefecture.
The river also has 47 chinkabashi (沈下橋 lit. 'sinking bridge') including those of tributaries. Chinkabashi are low water crossings without parapets in order not to be washed away by floods. The prefecture decided to preserve them as cultural heritages.

Behind the scenes:
The Shimantogawa is a 196 kilometer long river in the heartland of Shikoku. Being remote from big cities and having no dams it is also called «Japan’s last clear stream». The landmark of the river are its submersible bridges that are made without railings in order to withstand floods. They call it «chinkabashi» in Japan. The Shimantogawa area is also a perfect place a bicycle tour. You can rent a bicycle at Ekawasaki station and ride 40 kilometers along the river to Nakamura / Shimanto. It’s a downhill ride. I made this tour in May 2018.
Technical infos:
I used a DJI Mavic Pro drone for the aerial shots and fixed a DJI Osmo+ (the DJI Osmo Pocket didn’t exist at the time) and a Crystal Sky display on the front of my bicycle.

TREASURES OF KOCHI Part I
Kochi Prefecture lies on the south shore of Shikoku, one of the four main islands of Japan. Kochi is a mountainous prefecture. Over eighty percent of its area is forested, the highest percentage of any Japanese prefecture. With the Pacific Ocean spreading along its coastline, Kochi is also a maritime prefecture.
The constant presence of the vast ocean has an enormous effect on the spirit of the people of Kochi. Ryoma Sakamoto is a Kochi-born hero of the creation of modern Japan who, in an era when Japan had shut itself off from the world, always looked outward and wanted Japan to be open to foreign influences. Openness to outside cultural influences and a tolerant attitude go to the heart of the Kochi character. Accepting those foreign influences, the people of Kochi adapt them to their own natural surroundings and conditions, creating a living culture of their own.
With its unique atmosphere and lifestyle, as well as its beautiful ocean, mountains, and abundant local products, Kochi is like a giant treasure chest. These Treasures of Kochi will be introduced in Parts I to IV.
