Japan is famous for it's luxury fruits sold at auction for ridiculous prices! But where does that value come from? Is it all a marketing stunt, or do they really taste that good? We see them in the stores and they're expensive. So ー what is the true value?
Let's go to the Miyazaki Mango Auction and ask the buyer of the world's most expensive mango and the farmer.
The answer to WHY surprised me. It's not what I thought.
We not only learn about mangoes but Japanese culture.
Background:
Annually at auctions in Japan, the first blue fin tuna sells for over $1 million at New Year, melons in Yubari, Hokkaido sell for $30,000, and in Miyazaki, Mangoes sell for $5,000. How can a mango be worth so much? Is it the taste? The size? The smell? The color? The cultivar? All of the above? ー or just to get attention? ... or is it something more?
There is a deep respect for the farmers from the buyers and the stores that sell these luxury fruits. Of course buying a mango for so much money will get attention, but the motivation is completely different and I hope you can get a deeper understanding of not only mangoes but how Japan operates in business.

Tropical storm Krosa was expected to bring heavy rain to northern Japan through Aug 17, raising risks of landslides, strong winds and high waves. The storm barrelled through western Japan on Aug 15, killing at least two people and injuring 49.

Bluefin Tuna (Maguro) Story | Sea to Sushi Shop ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Japan's most prized bluefin tuna comes from a town called Ōma where a HON-MAGURO auctioned in Tsukiji once fetched $1.4M (2003). Oma Maguro is a brand. Just the location it's caught increases the price of the tuna by as much as 20%! I traveled to the town on the tip of Japan's Honshu Island in Aomori prefecture to find out if the taste lives up to its reputation.
★ OUT TO SEA
First I go out to the middle of the Tsugaru Straight between Honshu and Hokkaido to see where the maguro come from. The sea is rough out there and fisherman challenge themselves with line and pole to catch a prized bluefin.
★ CUTTING UP A TUNA
I visit Oomanzoku to watch owner Takeuchi-san cut up a newly purchased hon-maguro from Tsukiji. He puts on a show 3-4 times a week and after the cut, I went in for a sashimi platter (3000 yen / $30)
★ AT THE RESTAUARNT
I moved on to HAMA SUSHI for a 7-course meal consisting of only OMA MAGURO! Menu listed below.
★ WHY IS OMA'S BLUEFIN TUNA THE BEST IN JAPAN (and the world)?
According to Takeuchi-san, the bluefin in this area eat a lot of squid and that gives their meat extra tasty fat and good consistency which is prized in Japan. The Otoro (light pink fatty tuna) is by far the best I've ever tasted!

HOW TO GET THERE:
From Hakodate: take the ferry to Oma / 2.5 hours
From Tokyo: Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori or Flight to Aomori Airport
NOTE about Bluefin Tuna overfishing / endangered status:
I was concerned about this but what I learned is that the maguro here are not net fished by big boats. They are pole and string caught meaning local fisherman don't catch more than a few at a time.
Please take note that Aomori prefecture has laws in place and although other prefecture have different laws, the fisherman of Ōma have a profound deal of respect for the hon-maguro. Despite what you hear in the news, I did not see any kind of abuse. I personally do not eat much maguro because of the news, and any maguro that is too cheap has most likely come from larger ships over fishing an area and of low quality. Oma's fishing practice is the opposite, it's reputation important to the city. * I felt it important to include this.

Kyoto's Golden Kinkakuji vs Silver Ginkakuji ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Kyoto is Japan’s cultural capitol and home to over 2000 temples & shrines to visit, but it’s hard to know which ones to see when you only have a few days. This time, Kansai resident Kevin Riley and I debate two of the most visited zen Buddhist temples: Kinkakuji vs Ginkakuji
▶︎ KINKAKU-JI (1397)
Kinkakuji is called the “Golden Pavilion” or Golden Temple and is the more popular of the two because of its iconic gold leaf exterior. It was built in 1397.
★ PROS: It’s one of the famous scenes in Japan
★ CONS: It’s too crowded except for the first 15 minutes of the day. The surrounding gardens are kind of boring compared to other temples & shrines and there isn’t much to do in the area. Few shops and restaurants. There is no subway or train nearby. It can take up to an hour to arrive by bus from JR Kyoto Station when there is traffic.

▶︎ GINKAKU-JI (1490)
Ginkakuji is called the “Silver Pavilion” or Silver Temple and is located on the East side of Kyoto and the start to the famous “Philosopher's Path” which eventually gets you to Kiyomizudera. Ginkakuji was supposed to be covered in silver foil but the Shogun who was building it died before it’s completion and the decision not to complete it give it a wabi-sabi aesthetic to it. It has a sand garden and a hilltop view.
★ PROS: Less crowded than Kinkakuji and the building is surrounded with tree giving it a more zen-like feel / connection to nature. It’s on the East side of the city meaning there is more to do, a shopping street and loads of restaurants outside. The grounds are well groomed, not paved. Lovely moss. Sand garden and small bamboo outcrop near the restrooms.
★ CONS: It’s slightly more expensive than Kinkakuji. The walk from the bus station take 10-12 minutes to arrive on foot.

How to get to Kinkakuji:
Take the bus in front of JR Kyoto Station. Take bus 101 or 205 (220 yen / $2 / 40-50 minutes)
* There is usually a long queue to ride this bus after 10am.
Take the JR Sanin Main Line to Emmachi Station (2 stops) then grab a taxi (900-1000 yen / $9-$10 / 7 minutes) Total time: 25-30 minutes. You can also take the Metro Karasuma Line from JR Kyoto station to Kitaoji then grab a taxi.

Storm Krosa bears down on Japan
Heavy rains lashed parts of western Japan on Thursday (August 15) as tropical storm Krosa bore down on the country, forcing the cancellations of hundreds of flights and trains as authorities advised more than 400,000 people to evacuate.
Krosa, a Khmer word for crane, was heading northeast towards the smallest Japanese main island of Shikoku with sustained winds of 108 km per hour (67 mph) and gusts up to 162 km per hour (100 mph), with landfall likely in early afternoon, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
Authorities warned that the total rainfall in some areas could surpass 1,000 mm (39 inches) over 24 hours to Friday (August 16) morning and advised some 446,000 people to evacuate, but as of Thursday morning there were no reports of major flooding and only a handful of minor injuries.
The Shinkansen bullet train service was halted in one part of western Japan, as were all local train lines, and several highways were closed. A total of 679 flights were cancelled, NHK national television said, snarling travel plans for thousands at the end of Japan's main summer holiday period.

Tufão Krosa: pescadores imobilizam navios, suspensão de voos e operações de shinkansen
Hoje, quarta-feira (14) está prevista elevação das ondas no litoral, de Okinawa a Kanto. Em Tokai as previsões são de 8 metros em Mie e 6 em Aichi. Além disso, ocorrerão tempestades e chuvas, de Kyushu a Tokai.
A JR informou que dependendo do tufão considera suspender a operação do shinkansen, linha Shin-Osaka (Osaka) a Hakata (Fukuoka), na quinta-feira (15).
