Cycling with friends around Tokushima Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, Japan.
We arrived by ferry, then 5 of us rented mountain bikes in town. I brought my own mamachari - aka mama's chariot - cheap simple bikes with baskets front and back used by ladies to go grocery shopping in Japan. If you plan to do a cycling trip here, rent a mountain bike. It's only 500 yen (about $5) per day and it has GEARS... very important for Japan's mountainous terrain. The first night we rode up a mountain in the dark to a famous hot spring, it took a very long time and was very difficult on a single-gear bike.
We camped up on the mountain and parted the next morning after a meal and everyone else went back to the ferry and home while I continued my journey for another 9 days alone. I cycled around half the island, went white water rafting, swimming with dolphins, and generally enjoying the beautiful mountains, rivers, fields, beaches and meeting the local people of Shikoku.
