Get your fill of Tanga Market! Daigakudon / Sukiccha Kitakyushu (2018/6/26OA)
Kitakyushu's Kitchen -- Tanga Market, in the Uomachi section of Kokurakita-ku. Its more than 200 shops include one operated by students at the University of Kitakyushu: Daigakudo.
Order their famous daigakudon, and you get a bowl of rice to take through the market buying whatever looks good to you to put on top. The result: your own original rice-based dish.

Along the Japan Sea coastline of Yamaguchi Prefecture is the small historic town of Hagi. This small town contains both artistic elements (Hagiyaki Pottery) as well as cultural remnants (samurai town). And here, visitors can see how religion can co-exist in a single location.
Enseiji Temple has both a temple and shrine within its grounds. This Shinto and Buddhism coexistence was quite common in the past, but during the Meiji Period, the two religions were separated.
Built in 1254, Enseiji Temple was the worship place for the Ouchi clan. Another interesting historic fact is Japan’s first Prime Minister, Ito Hirobumi, learned calligraphy and reading here when he was a child.

Hagi (萩), a former castle town, is located along the coast of the Sea of Japan in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Historically, it is known as the capital of the Mori Clan which governed Yamaguchi Prefecture for over 250 years.
Hagi is best known for its local Hagiyaki Pottery. This type of pottery is among the best in Japan.
Hagi is well preserved. With several old samurai and merchant residents still intact, visitors can enjoy this historic town.

The Kintai Bridge (錦帯橋 Kintai-kyō?) is a historical wooden arch bridge, in the city of Iwakuni, in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.
The bridge was built in 1673, spanning the Nishiki River in a series of five wooden arches. The bridge is located on the foot of Mt.Yokoyama, at the top of which lies Iwakuni Castle.more info visit:

Where to go near Iwakuni Oshima Island Mutsu Memorial Museum Yamaguchi Prefecture MCAS Iwakuni Japan
The Mutsu Memorial Museum, in Ihota, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is dedicated to the Japanese battleship Mutsu, which sank near here in 1943.
This small museum displays items from, and parts of the ship salvaged from the sea bottom, as well as documenting the ship's history as well as her crew.
History of the Mutsu
Launched in 1920, the Mutsu, named after the former province in Tohoku, was one of two Nagato Class dreadnought battleships of the Imperial Japanese navy.
Extensively modernized and upgraded during the 1930's, she saw service during the Pacific War, in fact her sister ship the Nagato was the flagship of Admiral Yamamoto during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Though she played a support role in the Battle of Midway and Guadalcanal, the Mutsu only ever fired 4 shots in combat.
In 1943 her primary role was in training, and while in the Inland Sea just five kilometers from the museum, the Mutsu exploded and sank with the loss of over 1,100 lives.
At first it was believed a US submarine had sank her, but no evidence was found, rather the conclusion, however unpalatable, was that the explosion was caused by a disgruntled Japanese seaman.
The whole affair was hushed up and the survivors separated in an attempt to avoid a loss of morale. Following the war an attempt was made to salvage the ship but the depth of 42 meters was too great, however during the 1970's further operations brought up much of the wreck.
Mutsu Memorial Museum Exhibits
Materials from the wreck are displayed around the country including the infamous Yasukuni Shrine Museum (Yushukan), the Battleship Yamato Museum in Kure, and the Naval Academy on Etajima. The greatest collection, however, is here at the Mutsu Memorial Museum.
There are lots of documentary photos of the great ship, and a scale model. An example of a crew berth has been recreated, and there are lots of items salvaged from the wreck itself, much obviously quite corroded.
As with most Japanese war museums there is a great focus on those who died and a lot of materials have been contributed by families of the deceased.
There is no English language signage, but most exhibits are pretty obvious. The museum is never crowded so the staff can answer questions. On a rise outside the museum building are several pieces of the wreck itself including a gun and one of the propellers. The museum is likely to be of interest to anyone interested in World War II history and or battleships.

Holiday in Japan 2017 (Part 1) - Dazaifu, Mojiko, Fukuoka
On this first part of our 2 week trip, the wife and I quickly explore some bits of Dazaifu and Mojiko in Fukuoka. Some stops include the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, the former Moji Mitsui Club and the Kyushu Railway History Museum.
While I hope my viewers may find these videos at least interesting, it’s more of my way of trying to document our yearly holiday for my wife and I. ☺️
