Shimoshima is the largest island in the Amakusa archipelago. Its coasts are washed by Ariake Sea, Amakusa-nada sea, East China Sea and Yatsushiro Sea. Most of Shimoshima Island is administered as part of Amakusa city, with 67 km2 patch on north-west coast belonging to Reihoku town. The island's highest peak is Mount Kagoyama 538.4 m .

Amakusa (天草市 Amakusa-shi?) is a city located in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. Amakusa City covers parts of two main islands, and six smaller islets. They are referred to as Kamishima 上島 (天草諸島) and Shimoshima 下島 (天草諸島) (Upper Island and Lower Island). It has the distinction of being the fastest depopulating city in Japan since the last census. (2005)[citation needed]
The city was established on March 27, 2006, as a result of the merger between the old cities of Hondo and Ushibuka, and the towns of Amakusa (old), Ariake, Goshoura, Itsuwa, Kawaura, Kuratake, Shinwa and Sumoto, all from Amakusa District.

Paul and I took a ferry from Kuchinotsu in Minamishimabara to Amakusa in Kumamoto and decided to take a walk about instead of taking the bus. Nothing happened how we envisioned, but we still had a blast. Found out this island is famous fro scuba diving in the area.

It was built in 1602 on the Tomioka Peninsula on the western reaches of Amakusa Shimoshima. Today, the visitor centre offers 3D film on Amakusa’s undersea coral reefs that can be enjoyed.
