But the main attractions of the sanctuary are the rhododendrons which bloom in April-May coloring the Sanctuary in wild abandon.Hilley is the last motorable point before Varsey. A four-km walk through beautiful pine forests takes you to the Sanctuary. You can stay at the Gurash Kunj Lodge here.March/April most come into bloom and the place becomes really colourful.

Yumthang Valley and Zero Point, Lachung, Skkim
Another video from our Sikkim trip (May 2019) about Lachung.
Lachung is a small hill town in Northern Sikkim (Elevation 9600 ft) near the Tibet border. Located near the confluence of rivers - Lachen and Lachung tributaries of Teesta, Lachung (means 'small pass' )was on the trade route between Tibet and India
The town serves as a pitstop for visit to Yumthang Valley and Zero Point.
Lachung has been described as the most picturesque village of Sikkim by British explorer Joseph Dalton Hooker in his book, The Himalayan Journal (1855).. and we cannot agree more!
Yumthang, popularly known as the 'Sikkim's valley of Flowers' is home to the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary. It lies on the way from Lachung to Zero Point and is a must get down from the car and spend 2 hours kinda place. At Yumthang, you will find 24 varieties of Rhododendron flowers, many Yaks, prayer flags, a mountain stream and happiness! Please be mindful of the fragile ecology.
Yume Samdong is located around 26 kms beyond Yumthang Valley and takes around 3 hours to reach from Lachung. The place is often referred to as 'Zero Point' as there is no motor-able road beyond this place where tourists are allowed due to its proximity with the Chinese border. Nonetheless, this mountain top is flocked by tourists to enjoy the snow in any season. One can also enjoy piping hot snacks and drinks at the spot.

Rhododendron flowering shrubs light up the hillsides of north Sikkim
A multitude of flowering Rhododendron shrubs, of different species, light up the slopes of upper north Sikkim, in the month of June. As the camera lens pulls out, you see the starkness turn to apparent insignificance in terms of the scale and size of the Himalaya!

2019 Sikkim Trip (锡金): Lachung and Yumthang Valley
In my opinion, Lachung is the most memorable village visited in our Sikkim trip. Lachung is a mountain village close to the Tibetan border in the northeastern Indian state of Sikkim. This quiet riverside village is indeed a perfect holiday spot to rejuvenate and relax. We stayed two nights at Taagsing Retreat (Modern Residency), a monastery-like hotel with magnificent view of the snow-capped mountain range. The village is home to the 19th-century Buddhist Lachung Monastery, surrounded by apple orchards. Nearby, the Yumthang Valley's Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary protects many species of rhododendron. The valley is also known for its waterfalls, pine forests and hot springs. Only setback in this trip is not being able to reach Zero Point due to landslide...

Rhododendrons in Sikkim
Dwarf Rhododendrons in Sikkim, India. The slopes of the upper altitudes in Sikkim are carpeted with Rhododendron blossom in the months of May and June, in different shades and hues. Similar species are now found across England / the UK, where collectors have brought them back from the Himalaya, for inclusion in botanical gardens and private estate gardens.
Flowers in Sikkim. Different varieties of flowers are found in Sikkim. Sikkim is the least populous state in India and the second-smallest state after Goa. The climate ranges from subtropical to high alpine. Sikkim has around 5,000 flowering plants.

Yamthang Valley - Zero Point I Sikkim
The Yumthang Valley or Sikkim Valley of Flowers sanctuary, is a nature sanctuary with river, hot springs, yaks and grazing pasture on rolling meadows surrounded by the Himalayan mountains in the North Sikkim district of Sikkim state in India. It is at an elevation of 3,564 metres (11,693 ft) above msl at a distance of 150 kilometres (93 mi) from the state capital Gangtok.[1][2][3][4]
It is popularly known as 'Valley of Flowers'[5] and is home to the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, which has over twenty-four species of the rhododendron, the state flower. The flowering season is from late February and to mid June, when countless flowers bloom to carpet the valley in multicolored hues of rainbow.[6] A tributary of the river Teesta flows past the valley and the town of Lachung, the nearest inhabited centre. Yumthang is closed between December and March due to heavy snowfall. There is also a hot spring in the valley.
A forest rest house is the only permanent residence in the valley. During the spring months, the area blooms with rhododendrons, primulas, poppies, iris and other flora. During the summer months, villagers take their cattle to these heights to graze (a practice known as yaylag pastoralism). In view of increasing number of tourists, there is possibility of environmental degradation in near future.[7] Skiing is conducted in the valley.
