Kumano River Boat Tour - Shingu City
When visiting Shingu City, one must look into the ancient transportation of one of the most revered sites in the Wakayama Area
The Kumano River is a dominate landmark in the Kumano region running from North to South down the center of the Kii Peninsula. It served as a vital transportation link for the communities in the mountains and pilgrims past. Traditionally pilgrims travelled by boat from Kumano Hongu Taisha to Kumano Hayatama Taisha at the mouth of the river.
This sacred waterway is also considered an object of worship. Because of its spiritual aspects and use as part of the Nakahechi section of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, it was included as UNESCO World Heritage in the property Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountains Range.

Wakayama Shingu City Oto Matsuri | JAPAN Forward
A team of roughly 2,000 men (referred to as noboriko) clad in white and sporting straw rope wrapped around their waists light pentagonal shaped torches with sacred fire in prayer for a good harvest and family safety. The view that unfolds as the men charge down from the shrine with torches in hand is as the lyrics of the Shingu-setsu song describe, like a flaming waterfall and winding fiery dragon. The festival is known as one of the most lively fire festivals in Japan. On the day of the festival, women are prohibited from the Kamikura-jinja Shrine grounds, but are able to watch the festivities from the path leading to the shrine.

VR Journey of Kumano-Kodo in Japan Mind of a Pilgrimage episode1 (English version)
This is a virtual travel experience of pilgrimage to Kumano of Japan, where is Japanese sacred place. Kumano-Kodo is the old road leading to the Kumano where the ancient Japanese believed and have been passed through for a pilgrimage from the past 1000 years. Please feel the heart of the natural faith that Japanese people inherit. The Kumano area is located on the Kii Peninsula, located on the south side of the Kinki district (Among them, famous cities are Osaka and Kyoto) of Japan. The subject of that faith extends over a wide area from the center of the Kii mountain to the Pacific Ocean side. What you can see in this VR video experience is only a part of that. We would be pleased if the person who experienced this video wanted to actually visit Kumano. And this work is also a concept work of the SHINRYOKU. It took quite a lot of time and effort to finish this work.
Also thanks to the cooperation of many people I was able to make it. The work follows Episode 2.

The Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Route
The Kii Peninsula points south away from Kyoto and Osaka and is one of the most remote and mystical areas of Japan, despite its proximity to these great cities. Long a place of pilgrimage, the Kii Peninsula is the site of the three Grand Shrines of Kumano (Kumano Sanzan).

Japan Travel: Usui Pass Observation Platform and Kumano Kotai Shrine, Nagano 57
Japan Travel: On the Border of Nagano and Gunma: Usui Pass Observation Platform and Kumano Kotai Shrine, Nagano 57
Karuizawa (軽井沢) is an upscale mountain resort located at the foot of the active volcano Mount Asama in Nagano Prefecture. The resort is located at an altitude of roughly 1000 meters. Therefore, many visitors come to the town to escape from the summer heat. Karuizawa was actually first discovered in the late 1800s by Western residents of Japan. A popular international resort, today, many wealthy urbanites own a second home there. And with the Nagano Shinkansen, visitor can arrive at Karuizawa from Tokyo in a little over than an hour.
Karuizawa offers various outdoor activities, such as tennis, hiking, cycling, golfing in summer and skiing and ice skating in winter. In addition, there are many shopping opportunities here. Karuizawa is located along Japan's Romantic Road. The road boasts beautiful autumn scenery from around mid October to early November each year.
Four kilometers northeast of the Kyu-Karuizawa town center is the Usui Pass Observation Platform (碓氷峠見晴台). This observation platform is located on the border of Gunma and Nagano Prefectures. Visitor will be greeted with beautiful views over the mountains of Gunma Prefecture on one side with Mount Asama on the other side.
Near the Usui Pass Observation Platform is the Kumano Kotai Shrine (熊野皇大神社). This shrine is also on the border of Gunma and Nagano as well. There are three halls at the shrine. The main hall (hongu) is on top of the border with the Nachi hall on the left being on the Nagano side. The Shingu Hall, located on the right, is on the Gunma side. The Kumano Kotai Shrine is a branch shrine of the Kumano Sanzan shrines on the Kii Peninsula.

Fukuoka is great. Like, literally the best city in Japan in our biased opinion. Tokyo, Osaka, and Kobe are all amazing, but Fukuoka earns our #1 spot because it’s the perfect blend of big city life and smaller town chill factor.
We first came here last year for a belated honeymoon, and decided that if we ever got the chance to celebrate 10 years together here, then we would. And, we did! So, here we are.
If you’re looking for some ideas of what there is to do in what we dub Japan’s “Southern Capital,” then we hope you enjoy this video!

Kumano Sanzan-Hongu Taisha
Kumano Sanzan-Hongu Taisha in the Spring. A quiet tour through the grounds of Hongu shrine in Hongu, Tanabe, in Wakayama Ken, Japan. The tour takes you up the stone steps to the main shrine where yatagarasu images are ubiquitous. Then into the inner shrine to watch people in prayer. After that down to the carp pond and off to Oyunohara, the original Hongu Shrine. This is one of the most famous Shinto Jinja in Japanese history.
