A View from Yamaguchi University Library: Are Japanese Universities a Myth? #2
Brian Mc. Veigh, an American anthropologist claims that Japanese Higher Education is a myth. As an educator at a Japanese University I would have to disagree but there is a certain degree of truth in what he says, and he writes excellent books such as
and
This was more a test of the external microphone capabilities of my Drift Ghost S camera and alas confirms that there is a high pitched whine especially when the . I hear that one can reduce the whine by turning off the screen LCD, and reducing the microphone level settings. This cheap microphone needs the level to be set at 3 but when I use a better powered microphone I should be able to reduce the level, so that the whine can't be heard, maybe.
I have applied a notch filter to the audio using the method described at the link below to remove the high pitched whine.
Free Campsite in Yamaguchi, Southern Japan
Link to Google Maps
Senbogawasabo Park is a free campsite in Southern Japan, not far from Hiroshima. There are no showers, but there is a beach (in Chuudo, open only in mid summer), and the Aiosou hot spring facility (about $5 charged for entry) not far away. Both the campsite and the hot spring are owned by the former town now war of Yamaguchi City, so it may be deliberate that there are no showers in the campsite to encourage visitors to use the municipal hot spring. There are sinks and a toilet. The mens toilet only has a squatting Japanese style toilet but one can sit down on the toilet in the disabled persons booth.
While free, one is meant to reserve at the local Aio town hall
Telephone 083-984-8028
According to a camper one is meant to go to the town hall and fill in a reservation form. The one he showed me was written in Japanese. Google map link for the town hall is
The official homepage of Aio Town Hall (as it used to be called) or officially Aiosougoushisho (秋穂総合支所) is
It says that it is possible to get a bus from Shinyamaguchi Station taking 45 minutes. It would be possible to walk to the campsite about 3km away.
The camping site pitches near to the sinks and toilets are often reserved whereas the pitches further away at the rear of the campsite are often empty apparently. There are only about 12 plots so if there were to a sudden influx of visitors, such as after the Olympics, it would become very full very quickly.
Yes, the official homepage says that it is **essential** that one reserves in advance. The town hall (or municipal office) is only open on weekdays.
Aioso, The Municipal Hot Spring Facility is reviewed below
When I phoned them in English they could not understand a word I was saying but giggled.
This is Japan where one is often required to speak Japanese, las one is required to speak English in English speaking countries.
Access: Take the Bullet (shinkansen) train to Shin Yamaguchi station. Hire a car at one of the hire companies near the station.

One can climb the mountain, Mt. Oomi, behind the camp-site for a great view of the Seto Inland Sea,
similar to and even better than that available from Aiosou Hot Spring Facility.

Japan Trip: Hagi in Japan's History--Kido Takayoshi Residence, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Hagi Town
Hagi Town in Yamaguchi Prefecture is rich with art and culture. From its Hagiyaki Pottery, highly praised by the tea ceremony community, to former samurai mansions, visitors can feel Japan’s past in this small quiet town.
Visitors interested in Hagi and Japan’s history are advised to visit the birth house of Kido Takayoshi. Takayoshi is an important Japanese statesman who helped overthrow the Tokugawa family’s 264 year regime to restore the power back to the emperor. Once the new government was formed, Takayoshi became one of the most effective officials in the new government.
His birth home in the Horiuchi quarters in Hagi is a simple, traditional Japanese home. The 250 year old home has many small tatami rooms. There is a small garden as well where a pine tree (over 300 years old) stands.
Hours: 9:00 to 17:00
Closed: Opened All Year Round
Admission: 100 yen (Kido Residence only)
310 yen (combination ticket including eight other residences)

DYA717 Kyushu, Japan Nov 11, 2016 Back to Hakata then Yamaguchi BURA BURA
6:30 a.m. breakfast at the Hakata Eki Minami Toyoko Inn. Then “L” and I went to th airport. Of course was early so I had to watch da bags while “L” went shopping around the airport stores! Geez, what a bad disease shopping is! OK, so, almost before boarding time, we got to the counter and got the boarding pass. Phew! Close call! I said my Aloha/Sayonara and then went back to Hakata station. I had one more day on my JR railpass so I thought since I’m tired, why not just go for a ride around and rest on the train. I went to Shin Yamaguchi station (36-min) and then transferred to the local train to town. When I got to town I went to the tourist info counter and got some hints on what to see but then I was too tired and also running out of time. So, I went jump back on the train and got back to Hakata. I walked around the Hakata station and saw all these TV cameras around. So I went ask one of those guys (he couldn’t speak English and pushed me off to another guy) and then I found out that they had a train crash and were waiting for people to arrive. I guess they were going to interview them. I went underground and ran into this famous ramen shop called Ichiran or something like that! Twas in the underground Sun Plaza shopping mall. I got seated at what looked liked a study carrel and privacy side walls. What? They didn’t want me splash and slurp soup onto the other diners? : )) I asked da waiter for help and he gave me a form to fill out. I chose STRONG FLAVOR, ULTRA RICH FLAVOR, THE MOST GARLIC (1 CLOVE), A LOT OF GREEN ONIONS, WITH SLICED PORK, RED SAUCE #2 (it went 0, ½, 1, 2, or….. you choose). I chose #2 and the Noodles EXTRA FIRM. Wow, talk about the super max, ultimate ONOLICIOUS ramen! This bugger was it! Uuuuuuuuuu, ONO, ONO, ONO! I’m not trying to make y’all envious but just trying to relate my true feelings (heh, heh, heh, or kekekekeke). Every store I stopped by had Xmas stuffs. If a saw a clerk I would comment “eh, sistah, kinda early for Xmas yeh?” They only laugh or I guess went giggle hee hee hee!
Then I went BURA-BURA some more and walked past one interesting spot. 2 days ago, they had something like one sinkhole and the street went drop down. This was 1 block in from the Hakata station and 2 blocks from my hotel. Wow, spooky! Then I went looking for my hotel and ended up back at the train station. So I went into the the bus station building. Went up to the top which was restaurant row! I stopped by for a coupla glasses of red wine. Not bad. Then I went down the escalators and ran into one DAISO. I asked da wahine, eh sistah, you get sake drinking set? Of course she never understand what I was asking but after a few hand motions lifting imaginary sake cups, grunts, and basic kindergarten Japanese, I told her I would like to look at stuffs to drink sake from! Then I asked how many items would make a set! After about 5 minutes of hemming and hawing, she said weeeeeeeell, maybe 2 cups and 1 sake warming container. Well, at least they make a nice display! OK, go look at the video. They had plenty combos for you to configure a set for yourself AND only 108-yen (tax included) per item! Amazing and sooooooooo cheap! And then I looked at my watch and it said 5:30 p.m., figured it was soooooo late, and so I went back to my hotel and relaxed while writing junks for you folks to read! Kekekekeke
Oh yeh, some of you wondered about Autumn. Kyushu is going to be the last (next to Okinawa) where the leaves turn fall colors. If you look closely at the video, you’ll see areas where the tree are starting to turn colors.

Bike ride in Koriyama, Sendai, Miyagi, Tohoku, Japan
I am closing to Hachihonmatsu, but, in the meantime, I'm going through Koriyama. The sun is shining strongly, it is warm, but felt empty... Today is Monday, and it should be more people and cars there. Nevermind... well, pleasant breeze blows. It's hot, but thanks to the wind it's nice. It's quite an unusual sight for me. I've been here since one year, but the second time I see the police, protective place for some unpleasant event on the road.

DYA717 Apr 11 Chugoku San in San yo Shin Osaka
DYA717 Apr 11 Chugoku San-in San-yo Shin-Osaka 6:30 a.m. Shin-Yamaguchi Toyoko Inn breakfast. Uuuuuuu, they served NATTO and Curry-rice – what a breakfast! Today is moving day. Dropped my junks off at the Shin-Osaka Toyoko Inn Higashi-guchi. Couldn’t find a tourist information office at the Shin-Osaka Station and found a sign that said tourist information office is across the river at Osaka Station. Viewed some cherry blossoms around the Sakuranomiya JR Loop station. They were a few days or just about a week past peak. Then I had a great Okonomiyaki lunch at Yukari in the MIO bldg. and headed back to Shin-Osaka Station.
