Cherry Blossoms at Shiogama Shrine in Japan
An overview of the Shiogama Shrine in Japan. Shiogama is located about 20 minutes via train from Sendai in the Migagi Prefecture-- and about 2 hours from Tokyo. We visited during April, which is Cherry Blossom season. We also had a tasty snack of odongo at the shrine which were some chewy rice cake things seasoned with red bean, soy sauce, and sesame.

Shiogama Fish Market - Miyagi - 塩釜水産物仲卸市場 - 4K Ultra HD
Shiogama, located in Miyagi prefecture in Tohoku, is one of Japan's most important fishing ports and one of the busiest fish processing centers in the country. Shiogama Fish Market with its 140 stalls, is a very popular fish market and offers the best seafood all year long to both businesses and to the public.
Like in many other fish markets in Tohoku, it’s possible to pick-up whatever fish you want to create your own and extremely fresh Kaisendon (seafood/fish rice bowl) for about ¥400.
Finally, the city of Shiogama is also famous all across Japan for having the most sushi restaurants per capita in the country!!!!

Watari Arahama: Sendai's one of the finest seafood places
If you're already familiar to Japanese typical seafood like sushi, and are feeling like trying something more local and characteristic of the region/season, Watari Arahama is a place to go.
This cozy Japanese restaurant was originally located in a small town of Watari (south of Sendai), yet on 3/11 2011, the original building was all washed away by the terrible tsunami. Although they once considered closing the business, they decided to re-open this restaurant in Sendai supported by fans of this place.
Try their extremely fresh, seasonal seafood and you'll see why people didn't want this restaurant to close.

Salt of life - Traditional knowledge and wisdom of satoumi
The Agehama style of salt making has been in Noto peninsula over 500 years. However, as more practical salt making methods were developed, practitioners have declined in number.
Prof. Yanagi defined satoumi as a coastal sea with high biological productivity and high biodiversity due to harmonized human activities.
As a part of satoumi, the Agehama style salt making needs to be conserved in Noto.
This video was produced as a part of collaboration between Ishikawa Prefecture and UNU for Traditional knowledge and wisdom of satoyama/satoumi charcoal and salt making traditions in Ishikawa.

2014 07 13 Kesennuma to Otsuchi
Spent the morning walking around a devastated port town of Kesennuma. We stopped to visit the Kamaishi Dai Kanon then the small Collaboration School in Otsuchi, one of only two schools in the area.
Arguably one of the most emotionally overwhelming day on the trip. Seeing the 3 year old devastation up close, meeting more victims of the tragedy and hearing more of their back stories along with how grateful they were to see us made me even more thankful for this opportunity.
