People come to enjoy the sand and sun, while the area is also known for relatively good surfing conditions. The beach is about five kilometers east of Izukyu-Shimoda Station, parallel to the main road. Shirahama Jinja, a pretty Shinto shrine, stands along the beach.
There are shops and convenience stores selling food or renting beach gear along the main road. Paid showers are also available at the nearby shops. The official swimming season begins in mid July and lasts through August; however, with good weather conditions the swimming season can start as early as late May and remain pleasant through September.
Shirahama Beach is about four kilometers outside of central Shimoda. Take a bus bound for Itadoichiki (板戸一色) from Izukyu-Shimoda Station and get off at Shirahama Kaigan (白浜海岸, 10 minutes, 330 yen one way, 2 buses/hour).
Shirahama (白浜町 Shirahama-chō?) is a town in Nishimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan.
Shirahama is a resort town on the south coast of Wakayama Prefecture. Its beaches are white sand, imported from Australia.[citation needed] Shirahama is known for its hot springs. During the summer (July and August), there are fireworks every night on the beach.[citation needed]
Shirahama is about two and a half hours from Osaka by JR West's Ocean Arrow train service. There are daily flights from Nanki-Shirahama Airport to Tokyo's Tokyo International Airport (Haneda).
On March 1, 2006 the town of Hikigawa, from Nishimuro District, was merged into Shirahama.[citation needed]
Located in southeastern Wakayama Prefecture, the town has a temperate climate. Many hot springs can be found here, most notably Nanki-Shirahama Onsen and Tsubaki Onsen. Two public baths in the town are part of a World Heritage site.
Shirahama is one of the very few municipalities in Japan that do not have azas, or towns and villages that were previously in the boundaries of the present-day town. The Shirahama beach is a beautiful 800-meters long white sand beach.
It is located along the coast of the Izu Peninsula, South-West of Tokyo
It’s the ideal place to swim and surf.
Not far away, there is a beautiful Shinto sanctuary, Shirahama Jinja. This area is also well known for its numerous hot springs.
The official swimming season starts mid-July and lasts until the end of August. Nevertheless, the weather, usually clement, allows swimming until the end of September
Location: Shirahama Shimoda-city, Shizuoka
Access: From Tokyo station, take the Tokkyuu Odoriko train that is direct to Izukyushimoda station.
The journey will take you about 2 hours 45 minutes.A white sandy beach and a southern resort feeling with palm trees and a stunning sunset make Shirahama Beach located at the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula an excellent alternative to flying out to Hawaii. Actually Shirahama Beach and Waikiki Beach have a good-will sister-beach relationship, and I wonder whether the white sand is also from Hawaii. In March only a few people stroll along the beach but in summer this place is popular with weekend tourists from Kansai.

Japan Trip: Lots to See, Do and Relax in Shirahama, Wakayama 26
Along the coast of Wakayama Prefecture, facing the Pacific Ocean is the famous onsen (hot spring) resort of Shirahama. With its close proximity to Osaka, Shirahama is one of the top three onsen resorts in Japan (the other two are Beppu in Kyushu and Atami on the Izu Pennisula). Shirahama’s onsen was recorded over a thousand years ago. And is ranked one of the three oldest onsen in Japan (the other two being Kobe’s Arima Onsen and Matsuyama Dogo Onsen).
Shirahama is a well developed onsen (hot spring) resort 100 kilometers south of Osaka. Its popularity as an entertainment destination and its proximity to Osaka caused Shirahama to become one of Japan's three biggest onsen resorts, along with Beppu on Kyushu and Atami on the Izu Peninsula.
The Shirahama translates to white beach, the 500 meter long and sandy beach. There are many hotels along the beach. In the summer, fireworks are held nightly.
Visitors may wish to visit “Adventure World”, an amusement park with an animals, sea life, and amusement park rides. Though park’s star attraction would have to be the twin pandas, there are so many things to do in the park. In addition to the pandas, Adventure World has a Safari World with animals from Africa, as well as Penguin, Dolphin Zones and more. In addition to just viewing the animals, the park has a “feeling” or interactive section for visitors to meet and interact with animals. And of course, there are scheduled dolphin shows.
However, the main attraction of Shirahama would have to be the onsen (hot springs). This region has six bath houses with hot spring baths that are open to the public. Though most have only indoor facilities, there are two coastal outdoor baths (Sakinoyu and Shirasuna) which are popular among visitors.

Wakayama Day 4
Today I visited Kouyasan, an old town in Wakayama where the great Buddhist monk and founder of Buddhism in Japan, Kobo Daishi, built dozens of temples and shrines that remain after over 1200 years. Hundreds of legends and myths surround the place, the most profound one being that Kobo Daishi still dwells in the temple, meditating until he becomes enlightened

Shirahama, a well-known onsen (hot spring) resort in Wakayama Prefecture, has a lot to offer its visitors. Being one of the “top three” onsen resorts (the other two famous onsen resorts are Atami on the Izu Peninsula and Beppu in Kyushu), Shirahama attracts many visitors. Being only 100 kilometers south of Osaka, it is safe to say many of its visitors are from Osaka.
But onsen (hot spring) is not the only thing Shirahama has to offer. The name Shirahama literally means “white beach”. This is due to the 500 meter long sandy, white-white sand beach. With the hotels located a few feet from the beach, visitors can enjoy the easy access to the warm waters on the white sand. In the summer time, there are nightly fireworks.
In addition to water related attractions, Shirahama has a cultural side as well. Visitors interested in Japanese art are strongly recommended to visit the Kishu Museum. The museum displays collections of Japanese art works such as ceramics and ukiyo-e (woodblock prints). Works by the famous ukiyo-e artists Eishousai Chouki as well as Andou Hiroshige can be seen here. Tea ceremony articles as well as pottery and porcelain from the Edo Period are also displayed at this museum.
