Shirahige Jinja The White Beard shrine by Lake Biwa!
Shirahige Jinja (白鬚神社) is a Shinto shrine in Takashima in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. The shrine is dedicated to Sarutahiko Ōkami (猿田毘古大神). It is the head shrine of the Shirahige Shrines around the country.
It seems this shrine has a long history, it was founded in 1603 and Toyotomi Hideyoshi had something to do with it. Its most famous landmark is the Torri which stands about 30 meters offshore in Lake Biwa.
Shiga was known as Ōmi Province or Gōshū before the prefectural system was established. Omi was a neighbor of Nara and Kyoto, at the junction of western and eastern Japan. During the period 667 to 672, Emperor Tenji founded a palace in Otsu. In 742, Emperor Shōmu founded a palace in Shigaraki. In the early Heian Period, Saichō was born in the north of Otsu and founded Enryaku-ji.

The Shirahige Shrine is a hidden Floating Torii gate (about 2000 years old) in Lake Biwa located in Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Shirahige means 'White Beard' and the god of this shrine is known as a god of longevity. Locals believe that this Torii gate brings a fortune to their lives, marriages, including life achievements.
The Floating Torii Gate in Shirahige is much smaller than Miyajima Island's Floating Torii – Itsukushima. However, Shirahige offers a picture-perfect view of the Floating Torii Gate during the sunset.

Not too far from the beautiful torii of Shirahige Shrine, you will find the small village of Harie and its unique feature: free water! Thanks to its several rather easily accessible water springs Harie, also know in Japanese as “Shozu-No-Sato” or The Village of Pure Water” offers access to free and delicious water directly from the homes on pretty much every street of Harie.
People living in Harie are very proud of their spring water. They use it daily to not only drink but also wash their vegetables and even keep Koi Carp as personal pets. Limiting Harie to its gorgeous spring water will not be fair, as Harie is a magnificent little village frozen in time ideal to do away with your stress and worries.

Tsuno Shrine in rural Takashima shi near Lake Biwa in Shiga Ken!
This is the Tsuno Shrine (津野神社) in rural Takashima-shi near Lake Biwa in Shiga-Ken. There are huge trees flanking the Sandō (参道) or the approach-way leading to the main shrine. All around or rice paddies, birds chirping and the noise of the cicada's (蝉) is overwhelming.

Sunrise at Shiraghige Jinja, Takashima, Japan
Under the cover of darkness I took the last train out of Kyoto. When I arrived at my stop it was cold and I had a long walk ahead of me, spider webs wrapped my face and trucks hammered down the highway, full of strange fears I pushed on through to Shirahige Jinja shrine. It was far from a peaceful experience a four hour wait for the sunrise I was sitting on the edge of major highway roadworks, as they packed up for the morning the rain set in. I was disgruntled, damp and cold. But soon got lost in a world of patterns as clouds rolled over Lake Biwa, I never seen the sun that morning but I could feel her presence as I just sat and watched the stunning display.
