Shirakawa Village, Shirakawa (Japan) - Travel Guide
Take a tour of Shirakawa Village in Shirakawa, Japan -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The spectacular country of Japan is an interesting fusion of bustling urban centers and beautiful rural countryside.
Amidst the latter is the small and peaceful village of Shirakawa, in the northwest of this island nation.
It is located high on the top of Mount Haku and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The village has gained a reputation as a wonderfully traditional Japanese agricultural community, both in lifestyle and architecture.
The houses here have steeply pitched roofs to protect them from the heavy snows that fall here in the winter months.
Throughout the year, the countryside that surrounds Shirakawa Village presents a pleasant complement to the village buildings.
World Heritage Site Shirakawa-go Promotional Video -musubu-A
Gifu Prefecture’s Shirakawa Village is located in the approximate center of the Japanese archipelago. In 1995, this small village, surrounded by mountains, achieved global recognition when it became a registered UNESCO World Heritage Site. The primary subject of this status is the gassho style residences and the lifestyles lived within them. People once again considered the wisdom of a culture of communal living, for survival in a harsh natural environment.
Gassho (praying hands) style houses were thus named because the shape of the large thatched roofs resembles the shape formed by people’s hands when offering prayers to the gods. No nails are used in their construction. The joints between timbers are secured only with ropes and vines, but have proven strong enough to endure hundreds of years of winds and snowfall. Just like the gassho style houses, the villagers themselves live hand in hand, bound together by the strong culture and enduring lifestyle.
Here, various aspects of life that the Japanese hold dear to their hearts are bound up together, and an irreplaceable landscape remains to this day.
Please come and make your own connection with Shirakawa-go.

Shirakawago : winter disney land of Japan
Shirakawago : winter disney land of Japan
Shirakawa-go is a small but enchanting village with snow-capped mountains situated in the north-west of Gifu Prefecture
On our way to Shirakawago we also visited Takayama city. Here you can have a taste of traditional Japanese food, visit parks, shrines, have a sight of the frozen river,of course play in the snow.
We had fun roaming around the old streets of Takayama city that has the traditional japnese shpops from where you can purchase gifts to your family and friends back home.
how to reach Shirakawago:
From Tokyo: 2-hour train to Nagoya Station in Shinkansen, and 2-hour train from Nagoya to Takayama and then50 minutes from Takayama by bus (Nohi Bus Center).
The journey from Takayama to shirakawago is amazing with lot of snow covered mountains, valleys, tunnels.
You can also book from a travel attraction operator, most of them have English translators.
one operator from whom we booked our tour:
Shirakawago was listed as an UNISCO site in 1995 as a result of the locals’ commitment towards preserving many unique elements of the village’s history despite the harsh climate. There are houses here which are around 300 years old, canals, rice fields, small farms.
During winter there are limited weekends of illumination of traditional huts which is a beautiful sight. You can take enchanted Disney movie-like photos with white powdered roof tops of the huts.
Area becomes crowded with tourists during winter, so an overnight stay is recommended. If you plan on staying overnight, you will find a number of the farmhouses being utilised as restaurants and minshukus (Japanese style bed and breakfast).

Shirakawa-go, Gifu Prefecture (白川郷、岐阜県)
The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-gō and Gokayama are one of Japan's UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The site is located in the Shogawa river valley stretching across the border of Gifu and Toyama Prefectures in northern Japan. Shirakawa-gō (白川郷, White River Old-District) is located in the village of Shirakawa in Gifu Prefecture. The Gokayama (五箇山, Five Mountains) area is divided between the former villages of Kamitaira and Taira in Nanto, Toyama Prefecture. Fireplace of Shirakawa-gō. These villages are well known for their houses constructed in the architectural style known as gasshō-zukuri (合掌造り). The Gasshō-zukuri, prayer-hands construction style is characterized by a thatched and steeply slanting roof resembling two hands joined in prayer. The design is exceptionally strong and, in combination with the unique properties of the thatching, allow the houses to withstand and shed the weight of the region's heavy snowfalls in winter. The houses are large, with three to four storeys encompassed between the low eaves, and historically intended to house large extended families and a highly-efficient space for a variety of industries. The densely-forested mountains of the region still occupy 96% of all land in the area, and prior to the introduction of heavy earth-moving machinery, the narrow bands of flat lands running the length of the river valley limited the area available for agriculture and homestead development. The upper storeys of the gasshō houses were usually set aside for sericulture, while the areas below the first (ground) floor were often used for the production of nitre, one of the raw materials needed for the production of gunpowder.
Beautiful Japan: Kawakami Village

Spring of 2015.
A new convenient shinkansen connecting Tokyo to Kanazawa in just 3 hours enabled us to make this trip to the Unesco Heritage Gassho villages of Gokayama and Shirakawago.
End April was the openingt of the snow corridor (Yuki-no Otani) in Murado_ along the popular Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route involving 6 different types of transportation across the Japan Alps.
Matsumoto Castle, in Matsumoto city in Nagano Prefecture, is among Japan's oldest and most beautiful castles and along with Hikone Castle, Himeji Castle and Inuyama Castle, is designated as a National Treasure. Matsumoto Castle is one of Japan's only twelve completely original castles
Kusatsu Onsen town was chosen as it was voted the top onsen resort in Japan. There is symbolic facility called Yubatake (Hot water field) in the town centre which is one of the resort’s main sources of hot spring water. The water at 90 deg C is cooled by paddles manually.
Spring was the cherry blossom season.
Although we were late for the yustino cherry blossoms , we saw other blossoms and we lucky to see the wisteris in full bloom.
The shibazakura or pink phlox was only 50 percent bloomed but enough to give us some spectacular pictures with Mount Fuji in the background.

Driving through a nearly abandoned village ほぼ捨てられた日本の村を介して駆動 - Abandoned Japan 日本の廃墟
This video came about at the end of a long day of hiking in an area I call the deep mountains. It's my favorite area to explore largely due to the near utter absence of any human activity in the regions beyond the last village. The very first time I (accidentally) discovered this valley my interest was piqued when I asked an elderly farmer at the edge of the last village (I didn't know at the time that it was the last village) what I would found in the mountains beyond. He looked me in the eye and said calmly nothing. I knew then that I had found the area where I would enjoy many adventures. The village in this video is the second-to-last village before the start of nothing. I once knew all of the residents here though now nearly all of the people are gone save a few very old women and one ancient man who has always been kind to me though he has never once opened his mouth to utter a single word.

THE PATH OF WILDNESS
The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast's track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination
The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.
