Wine Pick of the Week: Fleur Bleu 2013 South Eastern Australia Shiraz
Our Fleur Bleu 2013 South Eastern Australia Shiraz has a deep rich dark color to start, followed by a very expressive nose. A lot of black currant, blueberry and prune are in the attack. Some spicy peppermint aromas, typical of this style, are emerging in the finish. The mouth is fluid, fresh and aggressively consistent with the youth of the wine. We have more red fruits like blackberry and raspberry. The mid palate is elegant with a small influence of oak flavors. This medium-bodied wine has a finish with long smooth tannins. Our 2013 Fleur Bleu Shiraz has a potential for aging for at least 4 to 6 years.
GSM Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre, Australian Wine - McGuigan Shortlist
Neil McGuigan of McGuigan Wines joins Majestic Wine to taste his Shortlist GSM (Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre), a limited production wine available exclusively at Majestic -
2009 Shortlist GSM, Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre. The style that we're trying to make here is the style of the classic Rome style in France. What we try to do with our GSM is really focus on the Grenache part of the Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre. It's very Grenache driven.
It's got beautiful violets, raspberries, some touch of strawberry as well. It's got terrific color, lovely purple hues. You just smell that, all the fruits there. All those three fruits that I just spoke about are all there, and just a touch of oak, just a beautiful whiff of oak.
This is from the Barossa Valley, and normally from the Barossa you get big rich intense wines. By focusing on Grenache what we've able to do is we've been able to get elegance beautiful length and beautiful softness into the wine. It is a terrific drink. It's very soft, very velvety, and very enticing. Terrific with lamb and also be very, very good with Italian, especially pasta, terrific stuff.

Impact of pruning time and temperature on wine attributes (AWRI Webinar)
Presenter - Martin Moran (SARDI)
Recorded - 25 August 2016
The Barossa Valley is home of Australian flagship Shiraz, producing wines that are recognised worldwide. In recent decades, growing grapes in warmer conditions and scheduling the harvest in compressed vintages are challenging both the grower and the winemaker to produce suitable fruit for a specific wine style. In previous studies, higher daytime temperature was shown to impact on fruit and on the chemical and sensory composition of Shiraz wines. Results revealed that the main cause of a shift in harvest timing was due to the earlier onset of ripening. Thus, practical management that is targeted at delaying the onset of ripening was suggested to be a good approach to spread out the timing of harvest and reduce the risk of overripe fruit. Initially, a pilot trial of delayed pruning was tested in a single season in 2011-12, and the Shiraz harvest was spread out by approximately two weeks. A further trial was then established to delay and spread the harvest of Shiraz in two environments, ambient and heated (open top chambers), in Nuriootpa Research Station. Pruning time treatments were: winter (control), budburst and 2-3 leaves. From each replicated (3) treatment, wines were made in 2014 and 2015. Descriptive analysis (DA) was conducted by a Ph. D student’s panel under the supervision of Sue Bastian and Trent Johnson, and the chemical analysis was conducted with the support of Professor Dennis Taylor and pH candidate Mariola Kwiatkowski from The University of Adelaide. Chemical analysis comprised wine colour spectra and tannin by modified Somers, Cielab spectra and co-pigmentation factor by Gutierrez. Principal component analysis will be presented to describe and discuss the impact of temperature, pruning time and their interaction on chemical and sensory attributes of Barossa Valley Shiraz wine.challenging both the grower and the winemaker to produce suitable fruit for a specific wine style. Shot on location in Australia this series takes the viewer on a journey through the historic wine regions of Australia. Produced by Sydney based Panorama Films International, this series will give rare access to the exotic and colorful world of Australian wine. While Australian wines are available for purchase in many countries, little is known about the vineyards, process, culture and people who cultivate the grapes. This may very well be the only wine series available on Australia.
Grape varieties
Major grape varieties are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Riesling. The country has no native grapes, and Vitis vinifera varieties were introduced from Europe and South Africa in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Some varieties have been bred by Australian viticulturalists, for example Cienna and Tarrango.
Although Syrah was originally called Shiraz in Australia and Syrah elsewhere, its dramatic commercial success has led many Syrah producers around the world to label their wine Shiraz.
About 130 different grape varieties are used by commercial winemakers in Australia. Over recent years many winemakers have begun exploring so called alternative varieties other than those listed above. Many varieties from France, Italy and Spain for example Petit Verdot, Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Viognier are becoming more common. Wines from many other varieties are being produced.
Australian winemaking results have been impressive and it has established benchmarks for a number of varietals, such as Chardonnay and Shiraz. Moreover, Australians have innovated in canopy management and other viticultural techniques and in wine-making, and they have a general attitude toward their work that sets them apart from producers in Europe. Australian wine-makers travel the wine world as highly skilled seasonal workers, relocating to the northern hemisphere during the off-season at home. They are an important resource in the globalisation of wine and wine critic Matt Kramer notes that the most powerful influence in wine today comes from Australia (Kramer).
GSM blends
GSM is a name commonly used in Australia for a red wine consisting of a blend of Grenache, Shiraz (a.k.a. Syrah), and Mourvèdre. This blend originated from those used in some Southern Rhone wines, including Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Grenache is the lightest of the three grapes, producing a pale red juice with soft berry scents and a bit of spiciness. As a blending component, it contributes alcohol, warmth and fruitiness without added tannins. Shiraz can contribute full-bodied, fleshy flavors of black fruits and pepper. It adds color, backbone and tannins and provides the sense of balance such blends require. Mourvèdre contributes elegance, structure and acidity to the blend, producing flavors of sweet plums, roasted game and hints of tobacco.

Welcome to Prize Wines. A sporadic video blog about the wines I'm drinking now.
Please bear with me as I approach this from a casual wine drinker background. I'm not a wine grower. I'm a social wine drinker. So my description or off the cuff comments may not cover all the nuances of the wine. If you'd like to add more to my description of a particular wine, especially if you're the wine grower, distributor or retailer please feel free to comment below.

Thank you for watching my wine reviews.
I've received many fantastic and appreciated comments from people all around that have found the videos useful and I have seen a dramatic increase in the amount of people watching them (thank you, thank you very much), so in 2015 I will return with more wine review videos.
If you are a wine producer and would like me to review your wine for free, please click on 'about' on my channel and send me a message. I'll email you the address to post the wine to as soon as possible. If you find the video useful you are welcome to use it on your website. Videos are recorded with a Samsung Galaxy Note II mobile and are completely unscripted.
I cannot guarantee that I will be able to review every bottle of wine I receive but I will endeavour to do so. If your wine tastes great, it'll definitely get a review. If it doesn't, I would not wish to upload the video in case I was just unlucky enough to get a bad bottle, or there was some bottle shock in delivery, or it had been affected by the heat.
I'm not a sommelier so, in that sense, you can receive down-to-earth reviews from the point of view of a real customer who just loves wine.
If you're an enjoyer of fine wines like me and you like these videos and would like to contribute in some way, feel free to leave a comment below on what your favourite wine is like. IntheCellar - Visiting the Vineyards of Australia with Wines By Jennifer!
To bring us closer to the vineyards Australia we pop the top on two Chardonnays to showcase the versatility Australia has to offer. The first, the Marquee Classic Chardonnay 2009 - has vibrant, tropical notes while staying balanced with acidity and a luscious mouth-feel. The second wine, Marquee Signature Yarra Valley Chardonnay is a small batch beauty, from the cooler climate of the Yarra Valley in Victoria. Spending time in small oak barrels and a bit more lime and lemon flavors help us see that the different climate and vineyards can allow the winemaker to express the same grape type in two completely different styles! No visit with Marquee to Australia would be quite right without mentioning one of the top jewels in our portfolio the Silver Wings Vincenzo Old Vines Mourvedre / Shiraz. Sourced exclusively from outside a small town a few hours north of Melbourne in the Golburn Valley, this is a BIG, RICH wine with lots of tannin and power that slowly gets more approachable with every year. Winning top awards in Australia and Wine Spectator, the gnarled roots of the 35+ year old vines that make up this blend are co-fermented together to add complexity and depth to this fine wine. The Vincenzo makes you want a nicely grilled Filet or possibly some lovely Australian cheese to match the power and finesse. A $100.00+ bottle for under $50.00 that makes a great gift for your wine collector!
In the Kitchen and Marquee sends out a special thank you to our friends at Wines By Jennifer Boutique wine shop in Parkville, MO for participating in this exciting show and transporting us back to the vineyards and fields of Australia from a quaint house along the Missouri river! Sharing the knowledge of culture, atmosphere is always great with Jennifer and I highly suggest if you are in the Parkville area, stop in for a visit, they always have great wine selections open on the tasting table and a helpful staff to pour and chat with!!

Meet the McGuigans - Australian Wine Makers in Hunter Valley Winery
We meet the team behind the prestigious McGuigan Wines in Australia's Hunter Valley. Find their wines in our range of Australian Wines always available at
Neil: Hi, I'm Neil McGuigan. I run the vineyards, the wineries, and the wine making for McGuigan wines. The McGuigan family has been in the wine industry for a long time. Our great-grandfather was involved in the wine industry back in the last 1880's. Then really we started to get into wine making with my father, and that was in the early '40's when Dad was a winemaker for one of the major companies here in the valley. Then he started his own company which was called Wyndham Estate. He started that in 1968, and then my brother, Brian, joined him in 1970, and then we started the McGuigan brand in 1994.
Why we're passionate about wine. We love wine, because wine is an agricultural pursuit. It starts in the ground. You nurture a vine until it bears fruit, and then you take it from fruit into wine, and then you package it, and then you sell it. I suppose that's why we're passionate about it. It starts at the land, and finishes with the consumer, and we follow it all the way through.
Peter: Hello, my name is Peter Hall. I am McGuigan wines Senior Wine Maker at our Hunter Valley Winery. As a wine maker our main objective is actually to make the best possible wine that we can. I think that we're putting wines out there that really are a brilliant road at the cross point.
Neil: The 2010 vintage is upon us. We're about half way through across Australia. We're basically finished in the Hunter Valley, and the Semillon and the Shiraz this year have just been outstanding from the Hunter.
As we work our way across Australia the fruit from some ranges in the river land of south Australia are looking very, very good. The Barossa, we're about half way though the Barossa as well. It looks fantastic, has a big rich flavor, some reds. We're just about to start in the Adelaide Hills, and the Adelaide Hills are where we produce fantastic Sauvignon Blanc. The cool nights and the warm days we think are going to produce fantastic wines this year.
What do I like to drink? For everyday drinking, and I've got to say I like a glass of wine each day, I love our McGuigan Gray Label Chardonnay, not too much Merlot, a lovely delicate wine, lovely long palate. This is a sort of new style of Australian Chardonnay. When I'm having a meat dish, I love our Signature Barossa Valley Shiraz, beautiful wine.
Peter: The McGuigan wines had an absolutely fantastic year in the show circuit. We've won 14 trophies, 41 gold wines, 72 silver medals, and 160 bronze medals.
Neil: I think the future for McGuigan wines is very, very rosy. We have so many things happening in our wineries, and in our vineyards, which I believe will even make our wines better, and more prominent in years to come.
Find out more at where we feature various McGuigan wines such as
