A coastal community with a long history and far-reaching involvement with its natural surroundings, the area demonstrates a uniquely balanced interaction between terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

Hokkaido Japan Day 7 | Sunayu Onsen, Shiretoko Bear Country and Melody Road
This is Day 7 of living in a van in Japan, traveling all over Hokkaido the north island of Japan. Today we went from Lake Kussharo to Nemuro and slept in the van at another random parking lot. This was our first full rainy day in Hokkaido but still turned out amazing. We saw the red crowned crane in the wild, many deer, a geyser and much more.

２０１６年８月１１日、北海道旅行で立ち寄った、知床峠です。
羅臼岳がきれいに見えました。
国後島も見えました。
何年も通ってますが、霧が多く、きれいに見えるのは久しぶりです。
It is Shiretoko Pass which I dropped by Hokkaido trip on August 11, 2016.
Rausu-dake looked beautiful.
I also saw Kunashirijima.
I have been passing for many years, but it is a long time since I have a lot of fog and it looks beautiful.
Hokkaido, Shiretoko 知床
Shiretoko, located at the east end of Hokkaido and jutting into the Sea of Okhotsk, is a World Natural Heritage Site. It is also known as a habitat of brown bears, and white-tailed eagles that dive down to eat salmon that are swimming upstream to spawn in autumn.
北海道の東端に位置する知床は、広大な原生林を残す知床半島と、オホーツク海の沿岸海域を含む世界自然遺産です。秋には河川を遡上するサケや、それを餌とするヒグマやオジロワシが見られ、エゾシカやキタキツネなどの生息地としても知られています。

In this video we’ll show you Shiretoko National Park ,Hokkaido.
Five fantastic lakes surrounded by primeval forest.
From the observation deck of the elevated walkway, you can see a panoramic view of Daiichi Lake and Shiretoko mountain range.
There are two ways to walk in Shiretoko Five Lakes: Elevated wooden path and Ground promenade. The elevated road starting from the field house is a set route of 800 meters one way and 1.6 km round trip. It is open for free during the park opening period, and the slope is designed to be gentle so that people who push in wheelchairs and strollers can pass safely. It is a route to see only one lake, but it is possible to make a round trip in about 40 minutes, so this is recommended for people who have limited time to sightseeing.
Another way to walk is the “ground promenade”, where you can experience the nature around the five lakes while observing it at the same height as the line of sight. I would like to recommend it to people who want to deepen their knowledge while spending time slowly. This “ground promenade” is a “small loop” of about 1.6 km that travels from the field house to Lake 2 through Lake 1 and returns to the house through the elevated walkway. There is a course called “Large Loop” of about 3 km that goes around all the lakes in the order of 5 lakes-4 lakes-3 lakes-2 lakes-1 lake.
Shiretoko Five Lakes, the most beautiful around May-June, overlaps with the brown bear activity period, so during this period (May 10-July 31), you should walk on the ground promenade except for tours accompanied by a professional guide Be careful as you cannot. In particular, the appearance rate of brown bears increases in June. The reason for this is that the roots of mizubasho that grow naturally around the lake are their favorite food, and the appetizing brown bears who have entered the active period come to eat it.

On a cold, snowy night, the surreal Shiretoko Laser Show raised the hairs on my neck. The two of us felt like venturing out in a storm like having a tooth pulled but out we went, following the crowds through a tunnel to an open area.
For 20 minutes, smoke, different color lights, lasers and music recreated a time in 1948 when the Aurora appeared in the night sky, and it was mega-dramatic. This last winter snow festival in Hokkaido really put the icing (or now) on the cake...
