The Shiretoko peninsula, in northeast Hokkaido, is one of the world's richest north temperate ecosystems and one of only four Natural World Heritage sites in Japan. A coastal community with a long history and far-reaching involvement with its natural surroundings, the area demonstrates a uniquely balanced interaction between terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

知床半島 北海道 Shiretoko Peninsula Hokkaido JAPAN
Shiretoko Peninsula 知床半島 is located on the easternmost portion of the Japanese island of Hokkaidō, protruding into the Sea of Okhotsk. It is separated from the Kunashir Island of Russia by the Nemuro Strait. The name Shiretoko is derived from the Ainu language word sir etok, meaning the end of the Earth or the place where the Earth protrudes. The towns of Rausu 羅臼町 and Utoro ウトロ offer some interesting Hotspring 温泉.
To the east, Kunashir Island runs parallel to the peninsula. The Kunashir is part of Russia but can be seen from Shiretoko Peninsula.
2005 the Shiretoko Peninsula was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

知床国立公園 Shiretoko National Park covers most of the Shiretoko Peninsula.
Shiretoko Five Lakes 知床五湖 is a fantastic nature experience. An elevated wooden path way to Lake Ichi-ko (the first lake) can be taken year round for free without guidance.

Hokkaido Japan Day 7 | Sunayu Onsen, Shiretoko Bear Country and Melody Road
This is Day 7 of living in a van in Japan, traveling all over Hokkaido the north island of Japan. Today we went from Lake Kussharo to Nemuro and slept in the van at another random parking lot. This was our first full rainy day in Hokkaido but still turned out amazing. We saw the red crowned crane in the wild, many deer, a geyser and much more.

Shiretoko National Park (知床国立公園, Shiretoko Kokuritsu Kōen), located on the Shiretoko Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido, is one of Japan's most beautiful and unspoiled national parks. No roads lead further than about three fourths up the peninsula, and the northern tip can only be viewed from boats or be reached on multi day trekking tours.

Shiretoko National Park 知床国立公園 covers most of the Shiretoko Peninsula at the northeastern tip of the island of Hokkaidō, Japan. The word Shiretoko is derived form an Ainu word sir etok, meaning end of the Earth.
Shiretoko Five Lakes 知床五湖. These lakes are Shiretoko's best-known and most easily accessible attraction. The five lakes are located within walking distance of each other and well-maintained trails connect them, a quick circuit won't take more than an hour. The routes from lakes two to five require a reservation, payment of a fee and a visit with an authorized guide. The longest route is 3 kilometers long.

We visited East Hokkaido this summer (2018). When we drove Shiretoko highway which connects the east and west coasts at the neck of Shiretoko peninsula, we encountered a brown bear. This video shows that moment. Brown bears in Hokkaido are cousins of grizzlies in North America.
