----------------------------------------
Croydon is in the London Borough of Croydon spread across both London and Surrey. It's a large town directly to the south of central London in the midst of Bromley, Thornton Heath, Mitcham and Carshalton.
Originally a mediaeval market town, Croydon was the go-to place for the valuable Saffron spice and its place name is believed to be derived from this.
Croydon boasts a large shopping complex in the shape of the Centrale and the Whitgift Centre which was the largest shopping centre in London until 2008.
This Greater London town is distinctive for its TfL Tramlink light rail transport system. Croydon's version of the DLR. It began operating in 2000 as the first London tram system since 1952. All 17 miles of it are now included on the London Tube Map.
The council seems to have given tacit approval of an arts quarter over the last few years. Dozens of striking murals are emerging on walls, shutters and fences around the town centre as part of the 2015 Croydon Mural Project which has produced over 100 murals to date.
Croydon College is a further education college established in 1868 offering BTEC Diplomas, NVQs, A levels and entry level courses. For the last few years, it has maintained an Ofsted rating of 'good'. The BRIT School for performing arts and technology also lives in Croydon and has birthed a slew of notable actors and musicians.
Recently, the popular food, retail and club outlet, Boxpark, forged out of shipping containers, opened a venue in East Croydon. It has revitalised the night life and trendy image among younger punters.
The town is expected to see further changes through its Vision 2020 urban planning initiative which aims on promoting Croydon as a hub of living, retailing, culture and business with £3.5 billion committed to development projects.
The Shirley Windmill has had its fair share of life tribulations. Its been abandoned, set on fire, replaced, eaten by birds, struck by lightning, had limbs broken off and was listed for sale in the paper as an April fool's joke by school pupils in 1971.
In 1803, Croydon opened the worlds first public railway. The Surrey Iron Railway ran from Croydon to Wandsworth to facilitate the area into becoming a growing commuter town.
Today, East Croydon station is one of the U.K.’s busiest non-terminal train stations. Additionally, the large town has a West and South Croydon station but is absent of a North Croydon. There is an express train to Gatwick airport; just one replacement of the now defunct Croydon international airport, which was also the U.K.’s first. It introduced a control tower along with air-traffic control to the world after the first world war.
Neighbouring the station is the iconic 50p building, or as it is properly known, number One Croydon. Completed in 1970, it has 27 multi angular storeys stacked up to a height of 269 feet.
Saffron Square tower is currently Croydon's tallest building at 440 feet and recently won a unique architectural prize for the ugliest building in the UK. A new skyscraper is set to be built at nearly 800 feet. This will exceed the height of One Canada Square in Canary Wharf to become the U.K.’s second tallest building behind The Shard and the highest residential block.
The Fairfield halls arts, entertainment and conference centre opened in 1962. It has hosted The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Queen, Pink Floyd and was a setting in the Da Vinci Code film.
Aside from the modern development, Croydon preserves several older structures like the Croydon minster, Addington Palace to the south and Croydon Palace; traditionally the summer residence of the arch bishop of Canterbury for over 500 years.

The Shirley Schools, Croydon, c.1927-29
The delights of a summer fete! For the boys and girls of Shirley Schools, Croydon (c.1928), as well as dancing round the maypole, performing Cavalry, Dutch and Welsh routines, in full costume, the fete provided an opportunity to compete in flag races, bun eating and tilting the bucket competitions, and pillow fights. There is also an amusing performance of 'Wooden Soldiers'. Interestingly, the film closes with a sequence that shows children leaving school at 16 and being provided with clothing suitable for employment, and a 'situation'.

Andre Previn: Playing All the Right Notes! A tribute from the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show 1971
What do you think of it so far? Rubbish!
Andre Previn, who died today aged 89.
The multi Academy Award winning composer and conductor was certainly no stranger to the most famous stages in the world; it's perhaps unfortunate arguably is greatest moment was on stage with Eric and Ernie in the 1971 Christmas Show.

Morecambe And Wise (1960)
M/S of a stationary merry-go-round at the fun fair at Battersea Festival Gardens; comedians Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise (carrying a small leather case) enter shot from right, look round and then walk off again. M/Ss as they walk past the Big Dipper and roundabouts towards the restaurant and stop to look at a sign; C/U of the sign reading 'Festival Beer Garden': C/U of Eric and Ernie mouthing Beer Garden and nodding, then they walk in.
M/S of a terrace by a lake with a kind of model village with windmill and Ferris wheel in the background; two men are sitting at tables with drinks as Eric and Ernie walk into shot; they walk past the table of the first man and stop to peer at his beer mat, walk on to the next table to peer at the second man's beer mat, sit at the next table and Eric rubs his hands with glee and beckons the waiter. Commentator says To put you in the picture Eric Morecambe (the one with the specs) and Ernie Wise are keen tegestologists - which (for the uninitiated) means they collect beer mats. Waiter enters shot, takes their order and walks off.
M/S of Eric and Ernie at their table as the waiter brings them two beers; they examine the beer mats the waiter places on the table - obviously not thinking too much of them and start to drink. M/S from another angle showing the man at the next table in foreground, reading a newspaper. Commentator says To quote them: 'Our interest at first was mild but now we follow it through to the bitter end!'
Eric and Ernie peer over the reading man's shoulders to look at his beer mat and nod at each other. Then follows a bit of 'business' as Ernie asks the man for the time while Eric tries to steal his beer mat; he doesn't quite manage it as the man turns round and almost catches him; Eric smoothes the man's jacket and sits back down. C/U of the first man sitting at a table who has seen the whole thing; he is quite old and formally dressed. He looks shocked and his monocle falls out of his eye.
M/S of Eric and Ernie at their table with the reading man in foreground; C/Us of Eric and Ernie as they seem to be arguing about who should approach the man next. M/S as Ernie reluctantly taps the man on the shoulder, snatches his newspaper and starts to read it. The man sits there looking bemused; while he is distracted Eric replaces the man's beer mat with his own; Ernie hands back the newspaper and they both sit down. C/U of the old man looking outraged and taking a gulp of beer.
M/S of Eric and Ernie at their table looking delighted with their new mat while the reading man carries on none the wiser. Ernie unzips the small leather case and starts to take out piles of beer mats. C/U of old man watching. Commentator says Morcambe and Wise actually have many thousands collected on tours in this country and abroad. C/Us of Eric and Ernie setting out hundreds of mats on the table; Eric taking another wad of mats from his jacket pocket; brilliant C/U of him patting them and grinning, then of Ernie rubbing his hands with glee.
C/Us of Eric looking round suspiciously; the old man looking on; Eric pulling up his jacket collar to try and cover his face and hide the mats in his hands. C/U of the table covered with beer mats as we see Eric and Ernie's hands sorting them.
Note: Fabulous film with the wonderful Eric and Ernie looking very young - Eric looks gorgeous! On file is a suggested commentary for the film from The George Bartram Press Relations Organisation in Birmingham who represented Morecambe and Wise at the time.
