Ikazaki kite museum
In the town of Ikazaki on the island of Shikoku not far from the henro trail you will find an excellent kite museum that is definitely worth checking out. It is in a beautiful newer Japanese style building very near the river on which the yearly kite festival is held. This video is a brief walkthrough that shows some of the kites on display from across the globe. There is far too much to see than can be contained in a brief video. The displays on kite making techniques, the physics of flight and the history of traditional kites from many cultures are very well done. If you go be sure to bring an appetite, this museum also features an excellent udon and ramen restaurant! On a very hot and humid summer day I enjoyed a refreshing bowl of cold udon. Before leaving to continue my 88 temple pilgrimage I decided to take rest and fly my iFlite kite (this is currently my favorite kite). This area is also known for very high quality traditional handmade paper and you can see many beautiful examples to purchase or on display at the paper museum in Ikazaki.

【新潟シティチャンネル】300-years of Spirited Giant Kite Battles! （三百年の闘い！魂の大凧合戦・英語版）
The Shirone Giant Kite Battles take place on the banks of the local Nakanokuchi River, a tributary of the Shinano River that runs through the Echigo Plains. The 7 by 5 meter kites are flown over the river, get entangled with their opponent and the two fall into the river. Then, a tug-of-war ensues in an attempt to cut the strings of the other's kite. This lively event is the largest of its kind and in 2013 it was inducted into the World Kite Museum Hall of Fame. This is one of Niigata Prefecture's most cherished traditional events that many associate with images of early summer on the Echigo Plains.

The Former Hosokawa Residence 旧細川刑部邸, Kyū Hosokawa Gyōbutei, is the Bukeyashiki 武家屋敷 Samurai Mansion of the Hosokawa Clan, that ran Kumamoto from the early 17th century to the Meiji Period.
The mansion is a great example of a high-class samurai mansion of Edo-era, initially built in 1648 by the first Hosokawa lord of Kumamoto for his younger brother Okitaka Hosokawa as a rest house.
The beauty of the property is evident immediately, from the raked gravel patterns that hug the entrance path to the overhanging maple trees that turn fiery orange in late November.
Most of the rooms are open-walled, with expansive views of the property’s garden. A number of the rooms display treasures from the Hosokawa family – an exquisitely painted set of shells from the Edo-era matching game known as kai awase, a century-old go game board with black and white stones, plenty of exquisite period furniture and various pottery.

The 2nd annual Kite Festival - hosted by JASC, the Japan America Society of Colorado.
Family friendly and fun for anyone curious Looking for something out of the ordinary. Kite's may not be a well known part of Japanese culture, but with special guest Edo Kite Master Mikio Toki, Coloradans can experience extra special.
JETAA Rocky Mountain alumni comes out to volunteer and help JASC put on this great event. We created this video as a way to say Thank you! (or perhaps ありがとうございます!) to JASC for their hard work putting this event together.
We can't wait to do it again in 2017!
