Shitennoji Temple (四天王寺), Tennoji Ward, Osaka City
Shitennoji Temple (四天王寺) is located in the Tennoji Ward of the Osaka City. This temple is one of the oldest temples in Japan and was built in the late sixth century AD. This temple was built at the behest of Prince Shotoku Taishi, who as a member of the ruling family of Japan at that time, was a great follower and patron of Buddhism in Japan.
Even though it is a city based temple, it is a large sprawling temple with many buildings, ponds and gardens spanning multiple city blocks. Enjoy!

Shitennoji temple Osaka
Shitennoji Temple was the first Buddhist temple in Japan. Shitennoji Temple is a large complex with a five story pagoda.
it was the first Buddhist temple in Japan. Shitennoji Temple was originally built in 593 by Prince Regent Shotoku Taishi. In 587, when he was only 14 years old, together with his father-in-law, Soga no Umako, head of the most powerful clan Soga, fought against Mononobe no Moriya, head of the Mononobe clan, who was against the introduction of Buddhism into Japan. The prince prayed for help to the Shitenno (Four Buddhist Heavenly Guardian Kings) and promised them to build a Imperial Temple in their honor if the Shitenno helped him to defeat the enemies. His army became victorious thus he constructed a temple and named it Shitennoji (the Temple of the Four Heavenly Buddhist Guardians).
At the side of the Torii Gate in front of the Great West Gate, there is a stone monument which reads : Buddhism arrived here for the first time in Japan. Many buildings were destroyed several times, by fires, civil wars, typhoons, earthquakes and the U.S. bombings in 1945 during the World War II which were rebuilt in 1963.

This morning we had the chance to chill and explore our first Temple which was really interesting and had some beautiful buildings! We got there earlier than most so it was nice and empty for a bit.
On our way out we made friends with people from South Korea who we spoke to for probably a good 40 mins? We had time to look around Tonnoji Park too before it was time to head over to Universal Studios! xD
Stay tuned for the next video where we explore Universal for the rest of the day! xD
Thank you for watching! I appreciate it :D

Shitennoji Temple was erected in the first year of the Emperor Emperor (593). More than 1400 years ago. According to “Nippon Shoki”, the battle between Motoya Moriya and Soga Mako, and Prince Shotoku who was attached to the Sobu Buddhist priest, also carved the statue of Shitennoo himself in order to overcome the disadvantages. If he won, he pledged to build a temple to enshrine the four heavenly kings and save all the people of this world, and it was built to fulfill that vow after victory.

Shitennoji Temple @ Osaka, Japan
Monk from Shitennoji is briefing visitors after the morning praying session.
About Shitennoji:
Shitennoji (四天王寺, Shitennōji) is one of Japan's oldest temples and the first ever to be built by the state. It was founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, who supported the introduction of Buddhism into Japan. Although the temple's buildings burned down several times throughout the centuries, they were always carefully reconstructed to reflect the original 6th century design.
The outer temple grounds are free to enter, but admission to the inner precinct, the Gokuraku-jodo Garden and the treasure house is paid. In the pebble covered courtyard of the inner precinct stand a five-storied pagoda that can be entered and ascended and the Main Hall (Kondo) in which Prince Shotoku is enshrined as a statue of Kannon.
A short walk away, the Gokuraku-jodo Garden was designed based on descriptions of the Western Paradise of the Amida Buddha. Also on the temple grounds stands a treasure house that displays paintings, scriptures and other valuable belongings of the temple in periodic, themed exhibitions.

Day 28 - Shitennoji Temple and Shinsekai
This was the first day on our whole trip that we were led around by friends in Japan. Our first stop is Shitennoji Temple followed by Shinsekai (with kushi katsu for lunch...though I am not a big fan of deep fried food). As we were following their lead, I did not get the chance to take many videos.

Shitennoji Temple Osaka || Japan
Shitennoji Temple is Japan’s oldest official temple. It was founded in 593 by the prince Shotoku Taishi; a major figure in Japanese history who played a leading role in introducing Buddhism to Japan. He named the temple after the shitenno: four heavenly kings of Buddhist tradition who guard the world from evil. The prince had prayed to these kings during a time of war, and when the war was over he had the temple built in order to give thanks.
According to tradition, Prince Shōtoku enshrined statues of the four heavenly kings there because he had won the victory as a result of his prayer to those gods; hence the name Shitennō-ji, or “Temple of the Four Heavenly Kings.” Later Shitennō-ji became a branch temple of Enryaku-ji, the head temple of the Tendai school.
Shitennoji is a short walk from Shitennoji-mae-Yuhigaoka Station on the Tanimachi Subway Line. Alternatively, it can be reached in a ten minute walk north of JR Tennoji Station on the JR Loop Line.

Shitennoji Temple (四天王寺)
Shitennoji is the oldest Temple in Osaka. It was built more than 1400 years ago, in 593 AD. There is a time of peacefully thinking about history for each boisterous time enjoyed in this city full of energy. This is the secret of the right balance for a memorable trip.

TIPS/ADVICES
›››We would recommend staying at an accommodation around Namba or DenDen Town. Both are central to where all the fun touristy things are! We stayed in DenDen Town and mostly everything was walking distance away.
›››Purchase an Osaka amazing pass! This pass is a definite bang for your buck and really allows you to see what the city of Osaka has to offer. This pass allows you free access to many attractions, discounts for certain things and unlimited access to the subway!!! It was amazing!
›››Arrive to attractions EARLY in the morning. A lot of attractions can get over-crowded during prime time. Jim and I woke up early everyday and really enjoyed the quiet, peacefulness of the attractions we visited. For example, Osaka Castle and Shitennoji can get really crowded.
FAQ's ›››
›››Q: Could you also please give me a list of where to eat in Osaka?
›››A: we highly recommend exploring the dotonbori area and let your nose do the guiding. Ichiran ramen is a must visit for sure but be sure to visit around 11-3pm as we found that there was not a very long wait at that time. We also found the Pablo Cafe right by the Glico Running Man sign was very delicious! We highly recommend the original flavor cheese tarts. Lesli is a huge fan of their soft serve ice cream for their unique light cheese flavored ice cream. Last recommendation is in the restaurant area in the basement of umeda station called Shabu Sai. It is an all you can eat for a very affordable price (2900yen). The beef was very soft and tender and they have an excellent selection of vegetables.
