Northeast India consists of the eight states Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. This article covers tourist attractions in the Northeast region of India.
Gangtok (About this sound /ˈɡæŋtɒk/ (help·info)) is a municipality, the capital and the largest town of the Indian state of Sikkim. It also is the headquarters of the East Sikkim district. Gangtok is located in the eastern Himalayan range, at an elevation of 1,650 m (5,410 ft). The town's population of 100,000 belongs to different ethnicities such as Nepalis, Lepchas and Bhutia. Nestled within higher peaks of the Himalaya and enjoying a year-round mild temperate climate, Gangtok is at the centre of Sikkim's tourism industry.
Gangtok rose to prominence as a popular Buddhist pilgrimage site after the construction of the Enchey Monastery in 1840. In 1894, the ruling Sikkimese Chogyal, Thutob Namgyal, transferred the capital to Gangtok. In the early 20th century, Gangtok became a major stopover on the trade route between Lhasa in Tibet and cities such as Kolkata (then Calcutta) in British India. After India won its independence from Britain in 1947, Sikkim chose to remain an independent monarchy, with Gangtok as its capital. In 1975, after the integration with the union of India, Gangtok was made India's 22nd state capital.
The precise meaning of the name Gangtok is unclear, though the most popular meaning is hill cut.[3] Today, Gangtok is a centre of Tibetan Buddhist culture and learning, with the presence of several monasteries, religious educational institutions, and centres for Tibetology.

BABA MANDIR IS A DISTINGUISHED SIGHTSEEING PLACE OF SIKKIM. THIS “MANDIR” OR SHRINE IS DEDICATED TO “BABA” HARBHAJAN SINGH, WHO WAS A SOLDIER OF THE INDIAN ARMY. HE DIED NEAR THE NATHULA PASS IN EASTERN SIKKIM, INDIA. TWO SHRINES HAVE BEEN BUILT TO SHOW REVERENCE TO BABA HARBHAJAN SINGH. THE OLD ONE HAS BEEN BUILT AT THE SITE OF THE BUNKER, WHERE BABA HARBHAJAN WAS POSTED DURING HIS TENURE IN THE INDIAN ARMY. THE NEW ONE HAS BEEN BUILT AT CLOSE PROXIMITY FROM CHANGU LAKE.
OLD BABA MANDIR
AT A DISTANCE OF 60 KM FROM THE MAJESTIC GANGTOK CITY TOWARDS THE LEGENDARY NATHULA, YOU WILL FIND A ROAD LEADING TOWARDS THE KUPUP VALLEY UP TO TUKLA. A BIFURCATED ROAD FROM TUKLA WOULD CONNECT TO THE OLD BABA MANDIR (BUNKER). AT THIS PLACE; THE SAMADHI OF BABA HARBHAJAN, FAMOUSLY KNOWN, AS OLD BABA MANDIR HAS BEEN BUILT.
HARBHAJAN SINGH WAS BORN IN THE SADRANA VILLAGE OF GUJRANWALA DISTRICT (PRESENTLY IN PAKISTAN) INTO A SIKH FAMILY ON AUGUST 30, 1946. ON 9TH FEBRUARY 1966 HE GOT ENROLLED INTO THE PUNJAB REGIMENT OF INDIAN ARMY AS A SEPOY. THE YEAR 1968 BROUGHT HAVOC MISFORTUNE FOR THE STATES OF SIKKIM AND NORTH BENGAL, AS THEY WERE UNDER THE FURY OF NATURAL DISASTER. FLOODS, LANDSLIDES AND HEAVY RAINFALL CLAIMED THOUSANDS OF LIVES IN THE TWO STATES. SEPOY HARBHAJAN SINGH MADE AN IMMENSE CONTRIBUTION DURING THIS TIME IN HELPING THE SUFFERERS TO SUSTAIN. ON OCTOBER 4, 1968, WHILE HE WAS ESCORTING A MULE COLUMN FROM TUKU LA, HIS BATTALION HEADQUARTERS TO DONGUCHUI LA, HARBHAJAN SINGH SUDDENLY SLIPPED AND FELL INTO A FAST FLOWING NULLAH AND UNFORTUNATELY DROWNED. STRONG WATER CURRENT CARRIED HIS BODY FOR ABOUT 2 KMS FROM THE SITE OF THE ACCIDENT. HE WAS SEARCHED WITH ALL EFFORTS, BUT HIS BODY WENT MISSING. ON THE FIFTH DAY OF HIS MISSING, HIS FELLOW PRITAM SINGH HAD A DREAM, WHERE HARBHAJAN SINGH HIMSELF INFORMED HIM OF HIS TRAGIC DEATH AND HE ALSO MENTIONED THAT HIS BODY IS LYING UNDERNEATH THE HEAP OF SNOWS. HARBHAJAN SINGH ALSO EXPRESSED THE STRONG DESIRE TO HAVE A SAMADHI MADE AFTER HIM. HOWEVER, PRITAM SINGH DID NOT PAY MUCH IMPORTANCE TO HIS DREAM. BUT LATER, WHEN HARBHAJAN SINGH’S BODY WAS DISCOVERED AT THE VERY PLACE, WHICH HE HAD MENTIONED IN THE DREAM, ALL WERE TAKEN ABACK. AND, TO HONOR HIS WISH, A SAMADHI WAS BUILT NEAR CHHOKYA CHHO AT AN ELEVATION OF AROUND 4,000 METERS, WHICH GAINED POPULARITY AS THE OLD BABA MANDIR. THIS SAMADHI IS LESS VISITED BY TOURISTS. VISITORS NEED TO CLIMB 50 STAIRS TO REACH THE BUNKER, THE SITE WHERE THE SAMADHI HAS BEEN BUILT. THIS WAS THE PLACE WHERE BABA WAS POSTED DURING HIS SERVICE PERIOD IN INDIAN ARMY.

Baba Harbhajan Singh: A Dead Soldier still on duty | वनइंडिया हिन्दी
Major Baba Harbhajan Singh was an Indian Army soldier soldier who died near the Nathula Pass, Sikkim. He is revered by soldiers of the Indian army as the Hero of Nathula. He has been accorded the status of saint by believers who refer to him as the Baba. Many of the faithful people, chiefly Indian army personnel posted in and around the Nathula Pass and the Sino-Indian border between the state of Sikkim and Chinese occupied Tibet have come to believe his spirit protects every soldier in the inhospitable high altitude terrain of the Eastern Himalayas. As with most saints, the Baba is said to also grant favours presumably to those who revere and worship him.

Changu Lake & Baba mandir | Exploring Gangtok | India tourism | travel nature love
Tsomgo Lake, also known as Tsongmo Lake or Changu Lake, is a glacial lake in the East Sikkim district of the Indian state of Sikkim, some 40 kilometres (25 mi) from the capital Gangtok. Located at an elevation of 3,753 m (12,313 ft), the lake remains frozen during the winter season. The lake surface reflects different colours with change of seasons and is held in great reverence by the local Sikkimese people. Buddhist monks prognosticated after studying the changing colours of the lake.
The lake is surrounded by steep mountains which are covered with snow during winter. During summer the snow cover melts and forms the source for the lake.[1] The lake which remains frozen in winter season, sometimes extending up to May, receives an average annual precipitation of 1,183 millimetres (46.6 in) with temperatures recorded in the range of 0–25 °C (32–77 °F).
The lake is about 40 kilometres (25 mi) away from Gangtok on the Gangtok-Nathula highway.[3] Further, the road to Nathu La skirts the lake on the north side. The Chinese border crossing is only some 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) east-northeast in a straight line, but some 18 kilometres (11 mi) by road.
As the lake is #located in a #restricted area it is essential for all Indians visiting the area to obtain permits. In case of foreign nationals special #permit is essential.[2]
Indian Postal Service released a commemorative stamp on the lake on 6 November 2006.

This is Part 1 of our road trip from Gangtok to Nathula Changu-Lake Baba Mandir Trip by Car in winter 2017. We started at 7 AM in the morning with our guide cum driver Santosh Tamang (contact: +91 81162 70530) and had our breakfast at Chipsu in the restaurant of Ms. Choden (Contact: +91 87683 95757). Chipsu is just 2 kms before Changu Lake.
It was last week of November and we experienced snow on the road side from 15th Mile, a locality 15 miles away from Gangtok. After having our breakfast at Chipsu, we first went to Nathu-La border, then Baba Mandir and stopped over Changu Lake on our return journey from Baba Mandir.
