Mystery of the Longyou Caves in Zhejing Province, China
Near a small village called Shiyanbei in the Yazhou region, which sits in the middle of Zhejing Province, China, is a cave system like no other. Its extensive, magnificent, and rare ancient underground world is considered in China as “the ninth wonder of the ancient world.”
The strangest thing about this discovery is not so much their immense size, but the fact that there are no records existing of their creation.
First discovered in 1992 by a local villager, 36 grottoes have now been discovered covering a massive 30,000 square metres. Carved into solid siltstone, each grotto descends around 30 metres underground and contains stone rooms, bridges, gutters and pools. There are pillars evenly distributed throughout the caves which are supporting the ceiling, and the walls, ceiling and stone columns are uniformly decorated with chisel marks in a series of parallel lines. Only one of the caves has been opened for tourism, chosen because of the stone carvings found inside which depict a horse, fish and bird. The Longyou caves truly are an enigma.
Who built them? Short answer — nobody knows, although only the emperor and his leaders could have organized such a huge project, that’s if it was made at that time. Even if this was true, a project of this scale being commissioned by an emperor would leave historical records of its construction.
Every single one of the caves is covered, from floor to ceiling, in parallel lines that have been chiselled into virtually every surface. The effect is a uniform pattern throughout the caves, which would have required immense manpower and endless hours to create. The question is why? Was such labour-intensive work purely for decoration? Are the lines or patterns symbolic in some way? All that is currently known is that the markings are similar to those found on pottery housed in a nearby museum, which is dated between 500 and 800 BC.
One of the most interesting and challenging questions is how the caves have been able to keep their structural integrity for more than 2000 years. There are no signs of collapse, no piles of rubble, and no damage despite the fact that in some areas the walls are only 50 centimetres thick. Over the centuries, the area has gone through numerous floods, calamities and wars, the mountains have changed their appearance and exposed stones have been weathered, but inside the caves, the form, patterns and markings are still clear and precise – it is as though they were built yesterday.

Terracotta Army: The greatest archaeological find of the 20th century - BBC News
In March 1974, Chinese farmers digging a well unearthed the greatest archaeological find of the century - the buried Terracotta Army. After coming across a life-sized human head made of clay in Xi’an, China, archaeologists were called in to investigate. What they found was extraordinary. Thousands of life-like terracotta figures from the Qin dynasty, fashioned 2,000 years ago to protect the First Emperor of China in the afterlife. Archaeologist Li Xiuzhen has worked on the site since the 1980s. Her team was the first to discover that each warrior was originally painted in bright colours.

Number Eight: A 101-year-old woman in China has surprised her relatives by growing a six-centimeter-long horn from her forehead—and it looks like another one may be sprouting on the other side of her head
Number Seven: For over 30 years, a man in China has been living with a horn growing out of his neck. 62-year-old Li Zhibing, from Shiyan in Hubei Province, said that the unusual growth first appeared on his neck in 1980. Since then, the horn has been growing at an alarming pace, so Li's friends help him saw it off twice a year.
Number Six: Doctors have treated a young boy with a large birthmark on his face—by implanting horns in his forehead. George Ashman, 5, was born with a bright red blemish on his forehead and his mother Karen, 33, feared he would endure a lifetime of bullying. When he was four, he underwent a surgical procedure to stretch the normal skin on his forehead so the birthmark could be removed and covered with the new unblemished tissue.
Number Five: One of the most spectacular cases of human cutaneous horns involves the 69-year-old woman in the photos above. Though details on her case are sketchy, it is known that she tolerated the 17 cm long horn growing from the center of her forehead for approximately 20 years before having it surgically removed.
Number Four: Madame Dimanche, also known as Widow Sunday, was a French woman living in Paris in the early 19th century who grew a 24.9 cm (9.8) horn from her forehead before it was successfully removed by a French surgeon. A wax model of her head is on display at the Mütter Museum in The College of Physicians of Philadelphia.
Number Three: Dancehall artist Furtyle Brain got real goat horns implanted into his head so he can stand out and hopefully become more famous. The 29-year-old, whose real name is Kenardo André Robinson, said the implants were done in Jamaica by a Canadian-based surgeon.
Number Two: Huang Yuanfan, 84, said the odd growth started two years ago as a small bump but continued to grow. He said, I tried picking at it and even filing it, but nothing changed. The horn just kept getting bigger. Yuanfan says it has now reached three inches and is showing no signs of stopping. He added, Doctors say they don't know what caused it but if they try to take it off it will just come back. I try to hide it beneath a hat but if it gets much longer, it will be sticking out the top.

나는 옛 차마고도의 발자취를 찾아 쓰구냥산으로 이동했다. 높은 고도, 험준하고 위험한 길이지만 가장 아름다운 길이라 평가받는 차마고도. 지금은 포장길이 잘 돼 있어서 차로 오를 수 있다. 나는 지아진산 고개 넘어 쓰구냥 산으로 향했다. 쓰구냥 산으로 가는 길은 구름이 많고 안개가 심해, 현지인들도 긴장할 정도로 위험하다고 한다. 조금 더 달리니 천천히 안개가 걷히고 숨어있던 쓰구냥 마을이 나타났다. 쓰구냥은 우리말로 네 자매란 뜻으로 네 개의 설산 봉우리가 어깨를 나란히 하고 있다. 쓰촨에서 가장 높은 쓰구냥 산은 트래킹 코스로도 유명하다. 트래킹 시작점까지는 버스를 타고 가야한다. 입장료는 버스 포함해 90위안, 우리나라 돈으로 약 만 5천 원 정도다. 나는 세 가지 코스 중 고소적응이 쉬운 장평구 코스를 택했다. 장평구 코스는 경사가 완만하기 때문에 계곡물 소리를 들으며 걸을 수 있다. 바닥은 나무판으로 되어 있어 깊은 산속이지만 걷는데 불편하지 않았다. 한 1시간 정도 걸으니 설산인 쓰구냥 정상에서부터 내려오는 협곡 물줄기가 보인다. 시원해 보이는 이 물줄기는 산행으로 흘린 땀을 식혀줄 정도로 차가웠다. 한여름인데도 기온을 14도로 유지하고 있다. 아름다운 협곡을 따라 걸으며 만나는 쓰구냥 산은 가히 ‘동양의 알프스’라고 불릴 정도로 아름답다. “지금 어디까지 올라갔다 오셨어요?” “꼭대기까지는 올라가지 못했어요. 저희는 폭포가 있는 곳까지만 올라갔거든요. 폭포까지 갔다가 너무 힘들어서 내려오는 길이에요.” “쓰구냥산을 선택한 특별한 이유가 있나요?” “있지요. 이 산의 공기가 굉장히 좋은 것 같았어요. 공기가 좋은 것도 있고 환경보호가 상당히 잘 되어있다고 생각해요. 여기 오니까 온 몸이 힐링 되는 느낌이 들어서 좋은 휴식이 된 것 같아요.” 자연 그대로를 느낄 수 있는 이곳은 좀처럼 볼 수 없는 신기한 풍경도 많다. 가지를 덮고 있는 이것은 고산지대에서만 볼 수 있는 이끼다. 드디어 총총쟈오 폭포에 도착했다. 해발 3,700m에 위치한 폭포로 길이는 200m다. 울창한 숲 사이를 뚫고 시원하게 흐르는 폭포가 그야말로 장관이다. “아까 등산하기 전에는 머리가 아프고 발도 아팠는데 올라오고 나니까 그런 불편한 것들이 다 사라지고 여기서 더 머물고 싶어졌어요.” 수려한 경관을 보고 있으니 마음속 고민까지 흩어져 날아가는 기분이다. 폭포를 지나자마자, 빗줄기가 거세진다. 멀리 보이는 쓰구냥산은 다시 안개에 가려지기 시작한다. 나는 급하게 다음 목적지를 향해 서둘렀다. 폭포를 지나 1시간 정도 더 걸으니 쿠수탄이 보인다. 만년설이 녹아내린 물이 고여 자연적으로 형성된 여울이다. 가까이 가보니 고사목 수십 그루가 원시적인 멋 그대로 담겨 있다. 쓰구냥 산봉우리를 가까이에서 보기 위해 3시간 동안 올라왔는데 날씨가 원망스럽기만 하다. 벌써 하산하기 시작하는 등산객들도 보인다. “비가 와서 빨리 하산해야 해요 오늘은 안개가 껴서 볼거리가 별로 없어요. 이렇게 안개가 자욱해서 쓰구냥산도 잘 안 보여요. 그래서 하산하는 게 좋을 거예요.” 결국 아쉬움 마음으로 하산을 선택했다. 산에서 내려와 쓰구냥에 위치한 작은 마을에 잠시 들렀다. “이 마을 이름이 뭐예요?” “마네이짜이라고 해요.” “여기 사람들은 대부분 장족이신가요?” “네, 거의 장족들이에요.” 나는 운 좋게 티베트 할머니 집에 초대를 받아 갈 수 있었다. “어서 오세요 안으로 들어오세요. 안으로 들어오세요 수유차(버터차) 드세요.” 외지인 때문에 더욱 바빠진 할머니. 번거롭게 나무로 불을 지펴 차를 준비하는 수고를 마다하지 않으신다. 차마고도를 통해 티베트로 운반할 때 부피를 줄이기 위해 벽돌 모양으로 압축한 전차다. 오랜 역사가 살아있는 수유차의 맛이 더욱 궁금해진다. “수유차(버터차)는 보통 언제 마시나요?” “아침에 일어나면 바로 마셔요. 그리고 귀한 손님들이 오시면 대접하지요. 제일 좋은 (손님) 대접이 수유차예요.” 수유차를 우려내는 동안 할아버지가 보여줄 것이 있다고 해서 따라 가봤다. 티베트 사람들이 신성시 여기는 것이 있는데 바로, 야크 뿔이다. “밭갈이하고 농사 짓는 야크를 위해 여기서 제를 지냈어요. 예전에 여기 산에 소가 수백 마리가 있었어요. 지금은 상황이 달라졌지만 옛날에는 농사 지을 때 야크를 사용했기 때문에 야크를 굉장히 귀하게 여겨 숭배의 대상이었죠.” 야크에게 감사하는 오랜 전통을 아직까지 이어오고 있었다. 버터차라고도 불리는 수유차는 티베트 사람들에게 떼어놓을 수 없는 존재다. 먼저 달걀, 우유가루, 밀가루를 넣고 큼직한 야크 버터를 넣는다. 거기에 호두까지. 이건 차가 아니라, 마치 보양식 같다. “호두를 넣으면 어떤 좋은 점이 있어요?” “차의 향이 좋아지죠.” 티베트가 춥고 건조한 고원지대이기 때문에 이곳 사람들은 열량이 높은 수유차를 마심으로써 몸을 따뜻하게 한다. ‘자신들의 피’라고 할 정도로 매일 두고 마시는 수유차다. 그냥 보기엔 푹 끓여낸 걸쭉한 사골 국물 같은 느낌이다. 맛은 고소하고 진하다. 이 차 한 잔만으로도 속이 든든해지는 것 같다.
