Shobak - Crusader castle in Jordan
During our trip in Jordan we visited the Crusader castle Shobak. Shobak and Karak are the most famous Crusader castles in Jordan. They are located on the Kings highway. We visited these historical castles on our way from Dead sea to Petra. Shobak is situated only 35 km from the most popular sight of Jordan – Petra.
The castle was built in 1115 AD by Baldwin 1st King of Jerusalem and was the crusaders headquarters in Jordan for over 30 years.
We spent in the castle more than an hour. It was very cold and the weather was very windy (it was very cold in Jordan in January 2015).
It was very interesting to explore the ruins! There were no tourists there except us! We even managed to find a secret tunnel under the ruins of the castle!

Hiking the Jordan Trail - Shobak to Little Petra, and Back Route into Petra
Hike into Petra via the back route. Starting from the ancient Crusader Castle of Shobak, hike through the Araba Mountains to Little Petra, then enter Petra from hidden trail leading to the Monastery into the Nabatean rose red city of Petra. Animals, rugged and desolate terrain, delicious food and renowned hospitality. The real danger of Jordan is that you might have so much fun, you don't want to leave.
Shobak Castle Jordan - Tours in Jordan
Perched in a wild, remote landscape, Shobak Castle wins over even the most castle-weary, despite being less complete than its sister fortification at Karak. Formerly called Mons Realis (Mont Real, or Montreal -- the Royal Mountain), it was built by the Crusader king Baldwin I in AD 1115. It withstood numerous attacks from the armies of Saladin before succumbing in 1189 (a year after Karak), after an 18-month siege. It was later occupied in the 14th century by the Mamluks, who built over many of the Crusader buildings. Built on a small knoll at the edge of a plateau, the castle is especially imposing when seen from a distance. Restoration work is ongoing and hopefully this will include some explanatory signs.

Jordan's Crusader Castles (Jordan) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Jordan's Crusader Castles in Jordan.
The ruins of the Crusader castles of Jordan serve as a reminder of the bloody battles that once took place between the Christians and Moslems and that shook the Near East at a time in history known as The Crusades.Around four kilometres from the small town of Ajlun is Jordan’s sole surviving castle, Qalaat Ar-Rabad. It was designed to protect the pilgrims who were on their way to Mecca but was also a symbol of military power aimed well and truly at the Crusaders. The year 1115 marked not only the victory of the Crusaders at the Battle Of Tell Danit but also the beginning of Shoubak’s construction. After a siege that lasted eighteen months, Shoubak fell in 1189 to Ayyubiden. Shortly afterwards it was enlarged by the Marmeluccs and in the 19th century the Ottomans moved into the fortress. The most famous of the Crusader castles is situated in the city of Kerak around twenty kilometres southeast of the southernmost extremity of the Dead Sea. The fortress had great strategic importance as those who controlled Al Kerak also controlled large areas of Palestine and an area that extended to the southern section of the Dead Sea. Almost a hundred years after the conquest of the fortress the last French outposts in the Near East were also abandoned and today it is only the mighty and impressive ruins of the Crusaders that have survived: an atmospheric reminder of a glorious and colourful past.

Shobak Castle, Montreal Jordan
Originally known as Montreal, Qasr Shobak, was built in the early 12th century by Baldwin I of Jerusalem as a crusader stronghold of what was then deemed as Arabia, standing at the ancient crossroads between the Gulf of Aqaba, Damascus and Mecca. Though not as intact as nearby Karak Castle, Shobak offers an intimate look at an age long past.
The Shobak area is charged with the magic of Southern Jordan, its valleys meandering through an unspoiled landscape with sites of undiscovered mystery and charm. If you approach the castle from the south you get a terrific view of its daunting position. It lies, prominent and supreme, on a knoll with its vantage point over the landscape, a bastion against the searing and relentless winds.
The castle's exterior is impressive, with a forbidding gate and encircling walls three layers thick. The walls and projecting towers are still reasonably intact, but inside the castle consist mainly of tumbled stones with a few walls and arches. In the chamber on the first level two circular holes in the floor lead to a reservoir. Another of the rooms was probably a chapel. There is quantity of exquisite Mamluk lettering on the main square tower, between the arrow slits, but many of the rooms have fallen into disrepair and have even disintegrated into piles of rocks.
One of the most fascinating remains is the ancient well-shaft cut deep into the rock, with 375 steps leading down to the water supply at the bottom and further to the valley. It is one of the deepest ever created by Crusader forces.
To reach the partly restored Ayyubid palace complex, turn east and in 20 m right through a narrow vaulted passage. It was built in the early 13 century and consists of a large reception hall with chambers off. The central iwan is missing, but those on either side of it are still there. Piers supported arches across the rectangular hall and at the far end are three small arched niches.
Moving back toward the entrance you will pass the baths, also an Islamic addition. Note the flagged floor and under floor water channel. A small basin and some marble are visible in one room.
Today bus-loads of tourists tend to bypass the site on their way to Petra, Wadi Rum or Aqaba but a small detour from the high way to Shobak village will not disappoint. It is also worth to mention that Shobak Castle is in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2001.

JHRC - Shobak Trailer
The King Abdullah II Fund for Development (KAFD) created the Jordan Heritage Revival Company in 2010. JHRC seeks to provide authentic, engaging, and entertaining experiences for both Jordanian and foreign visitors in order to reveal Jordanian history in a creative manner. JHRC also ensures that the projects will provide greater economic opportunities for the local communities and will focus on employing military retirees.
JHRC currently manages two re-enactment shows and a guard exchange in Petra. Projects are under development in Shobak and Wadi Rum.
