Giant Cricket Bat at Shobrooke Park
Read all about the bat here
300 Years and Not Out! An ancient tree is to witness another few centuries after it has a new lease of life with thanks to Shobrooke Park Cricket Club, Crediton, and mid-Devon Estate Agency, Helmores.
The pine tree, planted in 1890 at the establishment of Shobrooke Park Cricket Club was damaged by a severe storm in 2012 leaving behind a 9 metre high trunk. When the damaged tree had to be made safe the idea to carve the remaining wood into a giant cricket bat was conceived.
Steve Jones and his fellow cricketer and tree surgeon Bruce Kerry carefully chainsawed the trunk into the actual size and scale of a giant cricket bat and it now stands at just over 5 metres high, with the handle 1.5 m and the blade 3m.
Once carved, the large wooden bat was taken in hand by the staff at local estate agency Helmores who painstakingly designed and hand-painted the bat with the Helmores colours. This also meant that the handle is wrapped with 130 metres of blue polypropylene rope. In order to ensure that the giant cricket bat survives the base and bat have been soaked endlessly with preservative.
Helmores have now set up a challenge for the players of Shobrooke Park Cricket Team - if they manage to hit the bat with the ball during one of their matches, they win themselves a bottle of Scotch Whisky.
Fordton House, Crediton
Full details coming soon: helmores.com
Fordton House is an attractive and unspoilt Grade II listed Queen Anne house, set in a glorious elevated position, overlooking its parkland gardens and across the River Yeo. The house dates from the late 18th Century and had been in the ownership of the present family for over 40 years.
The building is constructed of brick and stone, with stucco elevations under a slate roof and has been meticulously maintained by the present owners. The accommodation presents a wonderful opportunity to create a fantastic family home.
In addition, there is a detached gate lodge, which has recently been refurbished, providing excellent secondary accommodation, or a letting unit. Within the grounds are a good selection of outbuildings that have potential for conversion to provide additional accommodation, subject to the necessary consents.
The house provides spacious and well laid-out accommodation, of over 4,600 sq ft, arranged over two floors. An elegant front door opens to a gracious reception hall, with original staircase rising to a galleried landing on the first floor. There are three further principal reception rooms on the ground floor, as well as a kitchen, utility room and cloakroom with WC. The cellar provides a storage area, with original wine bins. On the first floor, there is a master bedroom suite, a guest bedroom suite, five further bedrooms, a family bathroom and separate cloakroom.
OUTSIDE
The gardens surrounding the house have been beautifully maintained and landscaped to create a parkland like setting, enjoying wonderful rural views in all directions. From the lane, the driveway is accessed after a listed bridge over the river Yeo, through a pillared entrance, past Fordton Lodge, sweeping in front of the house to a generous parking and turning area at the side of the house next to the outbuildings. There are extensive areas of lawn in front of the house, which run down to the River Yeo. At the back of the house, there is a large south-facing terrace and swimming pool. There are also further areas of lawn and a croquet lawn.
To the west of the house and outbuildings there is a substantial walled kitchen garden, with a productive and well-tended vegetable and fruit garden. In addition there is an orchard and paddock, suitable for keeping livestock. In all, the gardens and grounds extend to approximately 4 acres.

Exeter is an ancient city on the River Exe in southwest England. Dating back to the Roman era, the Exeter City Walls surround its centre and Gothic Exeter Cathedral. Exeter Castle, a Norman landmark, overlooks leafy Northernhay and Rougemont Gardens. To their west, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) displays fine art and costumes. The vaulted, medieval Underground Passages snake beneath the city.
Exeter lies within the county of Devon, of which it is the county town as well as the home of Devon County Council. Currently, the administrative area has the status of a non-metropolitan district and is therefore under the administration of the County Council (there was a plan to grant the city unitary authority status, although this was scrapped under the 2010 coalition government). The city is on the River Exe about 37 miles (60 km) northeast of Plymouth and 70 miles (110 km) southwest of Bristol.
Exeter was the most south-westerly Roman fortified settlement in Britain, although there is evidence a Cornish tribe existed in Exeter before the Roman invasion. Exeter became a religious centre during the Middle Ages and into the Tudor times: Exeter Cathedral, founded in the mid 11th century, became Anglican during the 16th-century English Reformation. During the late 19th century, Exeter became an affluent centre for the wool trade, although by the First World War the city was in decline. After the Second World War, much of the city centre was rebuilt and is now considered to be a centre for modern business and tourism in Devon and Cornwall.
The M5 motorway to Bristol and Exeter starts at Birmingham, and connects at Bristol with the M4 to London and South Wales. Exeter's main operator of local buses is Stagecoach South West, which operates most of the services in the city. Dartline is a minor operator in the City. Exeter is considered to be a rail hub within the south-west and is linked to most branch lines in Devon, including to Paignton, Exmouth, Barnstaple and Okehampton (by a special service). Exeter International Airport lies east of the city, and the local airline, previously called Jersey European and British European but now known as Flybe . The Exeter Canal also known as the Exeter Ship Canal was first completed in about 1566.
